Title: Medium pocket pairs - live game - hand 2 Post by: pswnio on December 28, 2006, 02:52:49 AM Final table of a rebuy. 7 left; 5 get paid. Chip average is about 70k. You have two shortish stacks to your left (40k respectively). Neither is afraid of shoving their chips in if they smell weakness. You have 80k chips. There is no massive chip leader. There is no obviously weak player at the table; indeed, there are a couple who you think can outplay you. The blinds are at 4k/8k and will be going up in 5 minutes time.
The table has been playing tight. Pre flop raises have been taking the blinds. You're on the button. UTG limps in for 8k. You played with him on an earlier table. His range there seemed to be KT or better. He didn't tend to limp unless in the SB. He's not afraid to lead out on the flop although he's not done much on the final table. You're not sure what this limp means. Next two players fold. The BB has been chatting away about needing to make a move soon. The SB is looking twitchy; you think this means she might have a little something. You look down and see 66. What's your move? PS We see and play a flop on this hand. I'll post it after I see some opinions on the pre flop action; I possibly played this one fairly unconventionally and incorrectly both pre and post flop and would really like some views. Title: Re: Medium pocket pairs - live game - hand 2 Post by: temp0r on December 28, 2006, 04:50:47 AM you can't flat call with that when you have 10 times the big blind on a final table!!!
with a limper, regardless of position or playing style i fold. leave the limper to have a confrontation with the SB/BB. afterall they're the short stacks you want rid of. Title: Re: Medium pocket pairs - live game - hand 2 Post by: JungleCat03 on December 28, 2006, 09:49:07 AM yeah, you have a reasonable hand, a pot worth taking down and the ability to put some pressure on the limper.
In a short stacked game i think you should pounce on opportunities like this and push. Limping behind seems bad. The limper's folding everything bar massive hands which means he's folding very often. The shortstacks may call but when they do it will usually leave you in a race with an overlay, that won't be for all your chips which is a good spot. The only thing that might stop me is you think that the sb may have a hand. If this is a genuine strong read then you should fold. 8k is way too much to pay to hit a set. you could be behind to aa kk with a limp and you got 2 to act after you without doubt you pass.....but to me it sounds like you pushed bad move imho Title: Re: Medium pocket pairs - live game - hand 2 Post by: JungleCat03 on December 28, 2006, 07:01:01 PM The structure makes this quite crapshooty.
The average is already less than 10 BBs and the blinds are due to rise in 5 minutes. The winner will either be someone who hits a rush of cards or whoever exerts the most pressure through aggressive poker. You can either hope and pray you hit cards or exert pressure in spots like this to give yourself the best chance of winning. In most structures it is also beneficial to aim for top spot and risk busting out rather than trying to fold into the money as you suggest. Adding 20k at this point will make you chip leader i beleive, and this puts you in a strong position around the bubble, where you can take advantage of your stack and bully the short stacks as they bubble dodge trying to fold into the money. Looks like I made the wrong move then :)
I smooth called. I was worried about UTG slow playing a monster. Thought process went: 1) If either SB or BB raises, I'll see what UTG does. If he moves in, I get out. If he folds, I probably call the raise and hope to win the race. 2) If SB or BB calls, I'll see the flop and evaluate from late position but almost certainly muck unless I hit. But I bow to popular and sensible opinion which derides my call! As it turned out, SB and BB flat called and checked respectively. I was surprised SB didn't move in but I think she was also worried by the UTG limp because it seemed so unusual for this guy. The pot was now 32k. The flop came 2s 3s 5h. I had one spade, a weak overpair to the board, and an inside straight draw, and 72k chips. SB and BB checked. UTG puts 24k into the pot, leaving him with 30k. What do you put UTG on, what's your move? Hope you haven't got your coat yet Tikay!
