Title: Your views please on this hand.....
Post by: Complimentary on December 29, 2006, 07:50:53 AM
It's a re-buy comp at my local cardroom. 7 seater table. 20 minutes to the end of re-buys. I have 5500 chips, blinds at 50/100 - re-buy amount is 1000 at 500 or less.

The general standard of play is loose and awful. UTG raises to 400, a very good player, one of only a few in the room who knows his onions. Passed round to me in the small blind, I have QQ. I reraise to 1500. UTG looks at me warily. The big blind an inconsisent player goes all-in for 5000. UTG thinks briefly and himself goes all in for 5500. My gut reaction is the UTG player senses I made a move on him and sees value in this move to make me pass. He is however a very good and studious player and could well have an overpair. after a long thought I can have 2000 at the end of rebuys (I have not yet had to rebuy) or go for a big pot, its 4000 to me to win 16500. I am very confident I am beating the BB player.

Anyway I call. BB had JJ and the UTG player did have KK. I luckily spike a Q however, win a big pot and go on to win the tournament. Was the long-term move to fold the Q's and resume with 4000 chips?

I'd welcome everyone views.

S

its clear that the utg 'solid player' is not gonna do this with JJ or less so u are either flipping or needing a two-outer with the latter being the most frequent, laying QQ down in the rebuy stages of an all in fest pre-flop is not something i would do very often but the solid player usually has AA or KK here and maybe would lay AK down after your raise and the BB's shove

I'd be folding here.

Even if the 'good' player has AK, you're risking your decent stack on a coin flip, and if the player has JJ (or any other pair), you're now an underdog to win the hand.

Nice hit with the Queen though - and it's good to see you didn't waste your luck and you went on to win it.

I wouldn't employ this logic vs a good player who has raised UTG

The key thing for me here is that you will have at least 2k at the end of rebuys anyway (maybe more) i gamble here with my QQ.

Agreed. You can win the tournament if you call and lose. You have a great chance of winning it if you call and win the big pot.
Instant all-in.
