In TV shows such as 24, ALIAS and Jericho there are references to EMP's.  Do they actually exist or is this just science fiction stuff?   

I am kind of reluctant to look online as I already read a fair few political /current affairs sites and I don't really want to spend New Year in a cell  :D.

It is only recently that I have heard this word mentioned on TV shows and wasn't sure if it was real or invented. I know it stands for electro magnetic pulse, but what does this actually do and how could it work they way it is shown on TV.

Something to do with radiation if i am not mistaken.

I didn't actually think of wikipedia.  I am always reluctant to type things like that into google, just incase it looks dodgy. It is like taking out library books on things like this, you never know who may be paying attention and getting the wrong idea.

An EMP weapon is the most efficient weapon in the theatre of war, unfortunately war has changed since it was developed and it holds little use now.

It also occurs naturally when solar flares hit the magnetic field, I'm sure I read about a bad one hitting Canada many moons ago.
