If someone berates you at the table, and you feel upset, read this short confession that was posted on 2+2.  The guy has serious personality problems, it might be huge inferiority complex, inability to get it up or whatever.  Funny, I can't bring myself to believe this is for real but still, the stupid thing is, he claims to make pple to leave the table, so he can play with ... probably himself.

I don't believe in berating bad players and I don't believe in criticizing someone's play, but I have a tendency to go off on people who are verbally confrontational at the table. When I do erupt, I keep it to strictly non-poker things. And I'm not talking about juvenile homophobia or dick jokes or racism. I'm talking stuff that would cause fights in a brick and mortar card room (and I'm pretty fearless and would talk trash back at someone if I saw the same attitude that I see online).

I like to coffeehouse and ask people questions about their lives. If you tell me your mom recently went through chemotherapy and you proceed to piss me off, I have a whole routine of cancer-related comedy that I will unleash. If you live in a country that recently had some tragic national disaster, I will make fun of the dead.

My problem is two-fold.

1) I enjoy this way too much. If I play with an [censored] who won't shut up, my goal is to reduce the guy to tears and possibly make him quit. I have been successful a couple of times so far. Sometimes, I regret the things I say. At other times, I really enjoy and spend idle moments thinking up cruel things to say.


While I've been in physical fights, I've never enjoyed inflicting physical pain, but there's something enjoyable about practicing mental cruelty on people who I think deserve it. Sometimes, I wonder if there is anything wrong with me. Is there?

2) It's fairly obvious that the lack of a chat outlet to take out some of my aggression verbally on people has caused me to become overaggressive at inoportune times. What's a good place to find some people who deserve a good smackdown? Trolling the 2+2 forums and mocking idiots with inflated egos is too much work. "


So the question is really is this guy is for real?

People like him roam the streets in London "smacking" (is that the term?) folks - they beat the shit out of them & then capture the whole thing on Moby Phones for the craic.

sounds like a complete ass. ive had a couple of idiots like that on my tables and the only thing you can do is turn off your chat (which i do regulary) and/or contact the poker manager.
guys like this always find an excuse to carry on their behaviour. they wouldnt get a way with it at live games because someone would take them outside and shut them up permanently. Bolt would be a good man for the  job ;)

He sounds very much like a 'keyboard warrior'. I very much doubt he'd do this in a live situation. 

I had one bloke on tribeca about a year ago who started spouting racist abuse at one of the players on the table who'd outdrawn him.  The poor lad didn't know what to do.  Fortunately, everyone else at the table spoke up, the offender was reported and I believe he was banned pretty much immediately.

The guy must be a complete numpty if he's for real, as for the reasons why you would want to do it god knows. Personally if he started on a table i was on i would just close chat as it's the easiest option i don't play well when i get in trash talk arguments.

I actually see what he is saying, if i am only one 1 or 2 tables and some numpty starts slagging the table fish for a bad play i normally jump to the fish's protection and rip the piss out of the mug doing it.

But probably not quite in the same manner as he does?

I think this keeping the fish sweet thing is so phoney.  A certain player on crypto goes out of his way to say "nh" whenever an idiot outdraws one of the more solid players.  Most players who go for draws not justified by the pot just can't help themselves - they may even derive a certain sadistic pleasure from the outdraw.  Shouting at them (giving the impression that you are upset) probably reinforces this.

Racist abuse personal attacks etc are obviously a different thing.

Take 1 losing player out of the game and make him a winning player and it changes your edge massively, i don't want to run the risk of that.

I find it works..jumping to the "rescue" of the fish makes some of them fold hands to you they shouldn't be folding. For some reason they associate being a "nice guy" with being a good player and therefore you would never bluff them out of a pot.

Just think, if it wasn't for Junglecat beating Pab so long ago, he may never have gotten so good!

I actually don't chat that much - it's virtually impossible when playing 4 or 5 tables without affecting your game.  I was just making the point that there is another perspective.  In a fairly hefty live cash game I used to play, a very rich player used to go for draws against players who he didn't like and who he knew would be hurt by losing big pots.

People give up poker or get better because they are losing more than they can afford, not because someone calls them a fish.

There you go, psychology at work.

Do you not think its possible that 1 player in the whole poker universe could be convinced that his game is poor through the chat, and he might then decide to improve.

I think it is deffo possible.

I think just about everything is possible.  Including that calling players fish might make them play worse.

I have in the past told players (mostly on ladbrokes) to stfu when they go on and on and on about bad play, but thats just cos they are boring me and as a bonus it might annoy them enough to affect their play. 

If I feel like saying something about someone then I'll say it, I really doubt that it makes any difference to the way someone will play.  When I have been called a fish (yes can you believe it!) it is usually because I have made the mistake that my opponent meant me to make by disguising their hand, and got lucky.  The insult isn't going to affect my play in the future.  I am a lot more annoyed by a bad mistake than by a bad beat and that's what will improve my play, not the insult.
