Why do I make these calls when I know I must be beat...someone tell me how to stop this!

Its an easy pass,you are getting over 2-1 though...doesn't matter he's cold called two bets, he's got a monster...

doesn't matter what odds you get if you're beat. and that's the main thing to remember. Odds don't matter much when all the cards are down and you know you're pooped...
then again, we've all made them and Lord knows it's hard to fold sometimes.

How do you know you're beat? He could have any two of the flush draws, K-K would have re-raised, so perhaps would T-T, quads is unlikey and a set of twos probably wouldn't make it as far as the River.


I've seen worse calls. The only hand I can put him on that has you beat is 6-7s, and even then you have to be surprised by the check call on the Flop.

I admit that this is always a tough laydown, but sometimes you just "feel" that you are behind.

I don't know wheather it's the way the chips go in, or the time your opponent takes to call, instinct, experience, ESP, call it what you will, but sometimes, you just know your beat.

I call here pretty much all the time given how the hand has been played.  And boldie, of course the odds matter.  Your hand only has to be good here 1 time out of 3 to make it a profitable call,  and in this case it probably is. 

I knew I was beat

Live, I can lay this down v v easily in a cash game depending on mental player notes

Online, I seem to struggle to do so..absence of physical/verbal reads I suppose


Maybe I am being too hard on myself, but I 100% knew I was beat when I pressed the call button

I would have called due to the way the hand played out.

ofcourse you are right about the odds mattering. I didn't mean it as it sounded. I was mainly talking about "knowing" when you are beat. sometimes you just do and in that case pot-odds aren't as important. they talk you into calling a hand you "know" you won't win.

I am with tighty (I believe it was him who said something about instinct at the table in one of the articles). this goes for online aswell IMO....sure you might make a bad lay-down...but not going with your guts can affect your play for an entire day and cost you more then "just" then 130$ he lost now,..if you know what I mean.

We should all listen to our instincts more. There is no point beating yourself up over it though.

Ialso make these calls far too regularly .... its almost as if you want to prove to yourself just how unlucky you have been and to see his hand so that you casually tell yourself "yeah my read was spot on". We are just diseased!

I've made mistakes the other way round and folding to all-in bets on the turn or river when I've got a good, non-nuts hand, against a very aggressive opponent.

I know he can bet with nothing, but the board has either flushed, put a potential FH or str8 out there, and I only have trips...I know I have him, but I convince myself that this time he's actually got me - but then he'll show his bluff once I've folded.  Here my instinct lets me down.

Let em Kin and keep the bluff in memory+. You will get him in time (also, people who show bluffs often here deserve shooting!)
