I am intertested to find out people's thoughts on who the best bands were in the 80's,  90's  and finally from 2000-07?

Owt else from history is too old :)

80's - The Smiths by a long long way.

90's - Nirvana

2000-07 - Keane

New Model Army.  All three decades.

(I don't expect to find too many in agreement with that)

Nope - Big Country until 2002 :D, after that Casbah Club, now Four Good Men.

Also mentions for U2, Simple Minds (both before they got arty/up themselves), and the Alarm.

2000's  Razorlight  (no-one stands out in this braket for me, no band has been dominant)

:redcard: - Great Live Band, also recently managed to piss off the current Music Industry by having a video done of one of their new songs with young actors playing the band - straight into the charts.

1980's: New Order -tho The Stone Roses and The Smiths would come close)

1990's: Oasis -This is a nostalgic pick as when i was growing it was true, i think stuff like Radiohead, Pulp many other bands i prefer to listen to now.

2000's: Doves- Not a common choice but i really like all 3 of their albums.

since Operation mindcrime was released in 1988 the 80's would have to be Queensryche
90's very Easy; Dream Theater

I had their first two albums which are absolutely hilarious and have since downloaded other stuff of theirs, the one that particularly stuck out was The Referee's Alphabet. Pure Class.

Can I take this opportunity to have a rant about Razorlight?  Please someone agree that they are the most overrated band of this decade!!  Don't get me wrong, Golden Touch was a half decent song BUT everything else on the album................

Any tips for the next big thing then?  I'm going to put a shout in for Mika.  I saw him at Shepherd's Bush in a support slot back in October/November.  Initial thoughts were the guy is obviously very talented, and the songs were catchy in a Scissor Sisters type way, but thought it probably wasn't my cup of tea.  Now that his first single has been released and getting some airplay though he's growing on me more and more and I suspect I'll be getting the album when it comes out.  For anyone who hasn't seen/heard it, here's a recording of his recent(ish) appearance on Later.   (the Razorlight fans will have seen this as they were on too!)

Good shout tighty I would add to this in the category of Next big thing -  The Young Knives, The Horrors and The Yards - who I think are fronted by the guy from The Seahorses (John Squires old band) - well it looked and sounded like him, live they were great, and from early impressions will go a long way.

Nearly all the indie/rock bands of today are shit.

razorlight; keane; the killers; arctic monkeys; ect..theres about another 10 that sound and look EXACTLY the same and theyve all been in rehab for cocaine addiction!! how the fuck can you need rehab for cocaine addiction? they have a couple of lines over a couple of months and check themselfs into rehab, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL, MUGS.

I'm kind of glad that the live band scene is flourishing in this country and that theyve all but extirpated the disposable pop cack that had taken over the charts about seven yeras ago but in comparrisson to the early/mid 90s genuis of blur; oasis; suede; radiohead; and then travis and the manics theyre just lightweight crap.

And they need to stop starting the band name with "The".

80's:  :dontask: (combination of not being old enough and living abroad)
90's: Not a band as such but Hixxy, Dougal and Sy get my vote (everything else is just a blur........)

My mate's boy's the guitarist, and they're doing a lot of touring at the moment - keep an eye out for them.

Your arguement had some merit (tho i don't agree) until you mentioned Travis! There were probably the most turgid, lightweight band from that era.

I think there has been some good stuff in recent years including the Arctic Monkeys and The Killers debuts (tho i would agree they maybe overhyped). What about Bloc Party or The Arcade Fire for example interesting and different indie music.

I will have to agree with you on Keane and Razorlight middle of the road sell outs IMO, like the stereophonics later stuff.

How can you say Keane sound like other bands? they are very unique.

Putting past bands on pedistals and rubbishing new ones will always happen from decade to decade, nothing new there.

The truth is its just not true.

I don't think anything will top the advert circa 1990/1991 for Ned's Atomic Dustbin being supported by Dumpy's Rusty Nuts.
