Title: Best debut album
Post by: JungleCat03 on January 05, 2007, 06:15:22 PM
Many bands achieve greatness in their careers, but who had the greatest debut album.

I'll throw some of my choices out there

Pearl Jam - Ten

Their best album. Relistened to it recently after a while without hearing it and I don't feel it has aged or been diminished by time even slightly.

Oasis - Definitely maybe.

Their best album. Chock full of classics

Rage against the machine - RATM

Their best album. Remember their UK TV debut on "the word" like it was yesterday.

Not necessarily the best, but a few of my favourite debut albums:

Pixies - Surfer Rosa

Gomez - Bring It On

Portishead - Dummy

Fun Lovin' Criminals - Come Find Yourself

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin

Artic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

The Beatles - Please please me!

Each of these are superb debut albums. You could listen to them again and again, and they still sound as fresh as the first time you heard the.

Artic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

This is one I just don't understand.  I've tried and tried to like this album, but I grew up on the Indie music of the late 80s/early 90s and it sounds like a lot of the stuff that didn't quite make the grade back then.

If they'd been around in circa 1990ish they'd have made it as far as being a support band for someone, no more than that.  If that's the best album that 2006 had to offer (and the NME says it is) then it was a pretty shit year.

The Foo Fighters debut album is also brilliant, as is the Stereophonics' 'Word Gets Around'.

Some of the singles are very good, but on the whole I was also disappointed with the album.  Probably because it was so overhyped.  Nothing that special, but not bad.

The Fratellis - Costello Music.  The most infectious album out there.

The Strokes - Is this It

I quite like the Monkeys album but it is well overhyped and for me, definately not the album OTY.  That award would go the latest Muse album.

Was going to say about the Foo Fighters too and I quite agree with all the other albums posted so far.......except the UB40 one lol :D

Damn, I was wondering why the Tribecca 20k hasn't loaded up for me and I'm not registered :( Could have sworn I was.

being a big Wonderstuff fan, I'll have to mention 8 Legged Groove Machine.  Also Janes Addiction and Primal Screams first albums are damn fine bit of music.

More to follow, better concentrate on those tournies I am in!

Snow Patrol - Final Straw.

Not their debut album, believe it or not it was their third. They release Songs for Polar Bears in 1998 and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up in 2001.  Final Straw came out in 2003 - great album though

Debut albums for some the easiest thing in the world for me;

Led Zep - Led Zep

Stone Roses - Stone Roses

Portishead - Dummy

Babyshambles - Down in Albion

System of the Down - System of the Down

Madness - One Step Beyond

Faithless - Reverence

Honarable mention for Prodigy, Outkast, G & R, Specials, Black Sabbeth

But Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, Bravery come on pressure on for that difficult second album.

For me, for the tunes, the memories, the time, the greatest debut album has to be Roni Size and Represent - New Forms.
Simply stunning.

Before looking at my collection, i have two which everyone will disagree with.

Inme - Overgrown Eden. 4 singles that did really well in the charts off their debut album and still nobody has heard of them.

Tenacious D - Tenacious D. An absolute classic and so is the film.

Title: Re: Best debut album
Post by: JungleCat03 on January 05, 2007, 10:55:25 PM
Portishead's Dummy is a great shout. Sounded so different to everything around at the time.

I still get a tingle down my spine at the creepy atmosphere of Sour Times.

Linkin Park's hybrid theory is a wierd one. I really like Linkin Park and some of the tracks are great but there's a few too many misses on the album to put them up there for best debut imo. Still a very good album.

Appetite for destruction rocketed G n R into rock legendary status. Another brilliant debut.

I was suprised no one mentioned Nirvana's debut album, then i remembered Bleach wasn't that great. Nevermind.

Title: Re: Best debut album
Post by: DAN DAN on January 05, 2007, 11:24:25 PM

System of the Down - System of the Down

Madness - One Step Beyond

Unfortunately I was introduced to SOAD with Mezmerize first, then Hypnotize followed quickly by  self titled and Toxicity and I was a little disappointed with the last two (first two)  I think this is because Mez and Hyp are so phenominally brilliant.

Agree One Step Beyond is amazing, still brings back happy memories.  Night boat to Cairo, fab

For me it has to be The Stone Roses self titled debut. From the eerie opening baseline of  I Wanna Be Adored to the amazing outro of I am the Resurrection, it is pure class. Hints of The Beatles, The Byrds and Hendrix and the jazz guitar at the end of Bye Bye Badman made this album unforgettable.

More than that though, being in my late teens at the time of its release we were being fed a musical diet of U2, Simple Minds and Hair Rock. We expected a little more after being treated to TheJam, The Smiths and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

The vibe in the North of England at the time of this album's release was immense. It felt like we had a secret that no-one else knew about. The atmosphere in clubs was fantastic and the fashion that went with the movement was memorable( where are my twenty-one inch bell bottomed baggies Shell??)

People bang on about Oasis, and they have written some excellent tunes, but without The Stone Roses there would be no Oasis (by Noel's own admission).

I played the (vinyl) album constantly for years and never tired of it. I played it the other day, and the hairs on the back of my neck stood to attention.

This album continually makes top ten in best all time album polls . Timeless classic.

Pete

A few that haven't been mentioned yet..

Patti Smith - Horses
Roxy Music - Roxy Music
Television - Marquee Moon
Gang of Four - Entertainment!
Wire - Pink Flag
PJ Harvey - Dry
Tricky - Maxinquaye

For some reason over the last 15 years there seems to be lots of really good debut albums but the artists never seem to be able to follow it up with a decent second album ie Portishead, Rage Against The Machine, The Strokes (although the made up for it with a cracking third).  Whether this is because the labels put them into long tours and they don't get a chance to work on a second album or they run out of ideas I don't know.  It seems that most of the newer bands seem to have very short careers.

Another great thread, one of my ongoing marvels in life is how incredibly young people seem fit to burst with a creativity bordering on the magical - would definitely go along with a few of the albums mentioned here. Stone Roses (unbelievably great debut) would probably top my list in terms of putting something out which, however derivative it may be, was like nothing I'd ever heard before - how can you, at the age they were then, be so fookin coolio and brilliant.

Pearl Jam's Ten the same, The Strokes - Is this it more recently. Though I find it hard to enjoy Coldplay now I think Parachutes was a pretty amazing first effort.

Betraying my 'era' I would add albums like Never Mind the Bollocks, eponymous first albums by the Ramones and the Clash (eponymous, not 'arf), Rattus Norvegicus, The Stranglers and Inflammable Material by Stiff Little Fingers.

xx

I was trying to read through what everyones fav was but kind of missed most of it as i was stunned to read that GNR Appetie For Destruction was 20 years old. That has made me feel seriously old.

Anyway, yes, that would be one of mine, Queen's debut is v good, Danger Danger's (obscure American band) and of course Van Halen 1.

Early last year a band called 'Say Anything' release their album '...Is a Boy'. That is certainly my fav debut for at least 15 years and fully 8 months after i purchased it, i still play it at least twice a week.

For me to, seeing browny at glasto 05 when, shall we say i was 'inebriated' was indescribably brilliant. I'm sure it wasn't the best gig i've ever seen but when the opening bass line for 'i wanna be adored' came rumbling out of the speakers and into the incredibly up for it crowd, i looked around and saw hundreds of people who obviously missed the roses live all appeared to be in the same totally eurphoric state as me. A girl behind me grabbed me in bear hug and shouted that all those twats watching basement jaxx at the mainstage deserved to be flogged. The roses defined my youth, genius.
