Registry Mechanic - currupt registry can easily happen when deleting programs - make sure you get a good/easy one to use Title: Re: slow computer Post by: Raindogs on January 12, 2007, 08:43:25 AM my laptop has slowed a lot recently and ive started deleting old software etc, now im trying to sort out my start up list, but i dont know where it is. i also want to know how to defrag my c:drive, and find out how much memory i am using/spare. if any1 has any other tips as well, cheers in advance Programs that run on startup will be in Programs->Startup (from the Start button). You could also have a look at what services are started (Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services. You can sort all the Started services by clicking on the Status heading. You can disable a service from starting by double clicking on the service and changing the startup type to Disabled. DO NOT DISABLE A SERVICE UNLESS YOU ARE SURE YOU DON'T NEED IT !! To defrag your C: drive; run up My Computer (or Windows Explorer), right click on the C: drive, select properties, click on the Tools tab, and you will see the Defragment Now button. You should check how much free space you have available and free up what you can before defragging. To check your memory usage press the CTRL + ALT + DELETE keys together (or you can right click on the task bar at the bottom of the screen and select Task Manager). Select the perfoemance tab. There are details of the Total and Available physical memory on the PC. You should check this when you have a number of different programs running to see if you are running short. I like to have at least 25% spare memory. Although you should download 'Diskeeper Premier' from mininova as I've found it to be far better than the standard windows defragger.
