what are the pro's of raise before the flop?

You might want to read a good poker book, It will give you the best starting hands and tell you what one's to raise it up with..But to answer your question, or some of it. REASON 1 If you have something like KK and you don't put out a good raise, then you are letting the big blind see the flop with his 7-2 when the flop come's out 729 your in all sorts of trouble, you have to get the junk hands out of the pot..REASON 2 you want to build the pot so as your getting some value on your hand..

There are many reasons, you could be putting out a huge bluff..

As I have only been playing a short time, very short compared to some others here, I won't dare to expand on bundle's post but do suggest you look to reading articles and such like and get some books in, good luck.

I'd say broadly you have 3 reasons for raising (of which a raise may be a combination of):

1) To get more money in the pot - you think you have the best hand, so you want to be playing a pot with more money in it.
2) To get other players out of the pot - the less players in a pot the more chance you have of winning it.
3) To "define" other players hands - by others reactions to your raise, you get information about their hole cards. Again this can help you win the pot, or along the same lines, lose as few chips as possible.

The first two are what I imagine you should focus on to start with. However you have to decide exactly why you are raising, never just do so for the sake of it - and whether your raise will have the desired effect against your current opponents

Standard play is raise at least 3 times the blind but sometimes you may think slow play and sit and watch Kqj come out.  The aces are now waiting for the straight. You have 3 and any j or q is a full house. Assuming the river is kind then make plenty because they think you are bluffing or at least going for the straight.

It is a case of mixing and matching.

Unless you are playing limit games when you raise each and every time in my opinion.
