APAT Announces Welsh Amateur Poker Championship

London, January 18, 2007 – The Amateur Poker Association & Tour (“APAT”) today released entry  details for the third live event in its critically acclaimed Tour for non professional players.

APAT, the world’s first combined Poker Association and Tour, will hold its third live event, the Welsh Amateur Poker Championship, at the Grosvenor Casino in Cardiff, on February 24th & 25th, 2007.  Players will start the event with 10,000 in chips and a tournament structure which has been designed to encourage creative play throughout.  APAT tournament rules, which have been standardised across all tour venues, will be in operation at Grosvenor Cardiff.

The event, which will have a capacity of 180 players, will attract some of the finest amateur players in the United Kingdom¸ who will compete for the Welsh national title, a first prize of £3,500 and an $8,900 expenses paid entry to the German leg of the European Poker Tour in March, courtesy of Tour sponsor PokerStars.com.

Entry to the Welsh Amateur Poker Championship will be open exclusively to members of APAT, and tournament seats will be allocated in the following way:-

•   Ten seats will be available via two online satellites on PokerStars.com.  The $10 + $1 tournaments will run on January 21st and 23rd at 8.00pm.  Registration will open 24 hours before the event and the top five players in each satellite will win a guaranteed seat in Cardiff plus the balance of available prize money for expenses.  The satellites can be found under Tourney / Special on the PokerStars.com client from this coming weekend.

•   Five seats will be available via a live satellite taking place at Grosvenor Cardiff.  The £10 + £3 tournament will run on January 25th at 8.00pm.  Registration for this event will be available via Grosvenor Cardiff, and Grosvenor Casinos nationwide, from January 20th at 2pm.  A maximum of 120 players will be able to enter the satellite, and the seats plus the balance of available prize money will go to the top five players for expenses.

•   One hundred and sixty five seats will be on sale at www.apat.com from January 27th at 8.00pm sharp.  Seats will cost £75.00 each and 100% of entry fees will go directly in the prize pool.

APAT’s previous event, the United Kingdom Amateur Poker Championship sold out two hundred and ten seats in a record twenty nine minutes.

APAT Chairman, Tony Kendall, stated:  “APAT is delighted to partner with Grosvenor, the leading provider of live tournament poker in the UK.  APAT has established itself as the affordable proving ground for talented amateur players in the UK, and we look forward to bringing our members to Cardiff, for what should be an outstanding event, at an outstanding venue.”

Russell Tamplin, National Poker Manager for Grosvenor, added: “Grosvenor Casinos are very happy to be hosting such a prestigious tournament for APAT, at our Cardiff Casino. We feel that it will compliment our own GUKPT tournament taking place at Cardiff in March, and very much look forward to working with APAT on this exciting event.”

Membership of the Amateur Poker Association & Tour can be obtained online at www.apat.com.  Individual membership costs £10.00.   Tournaments scheduled throughout the next six months include the Scottish, Irish, European and World Amateur Poker Championships.

Prize structure?

Thanks

start 2.30pm day one, 2pm day two

finish day 1 at midnight

not playing down to a certain number of players, we resume day 2 with all remaining

prize structure:

WELSH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP - PROPOSED (ie assumes we sell 180 seats)

1st      25.9%   £3500
2nd      16.7%   £2250
3rd      8.9%   £1200
4 to 10th           4.8%   £4550 or £650 each
11 to 18th    1.9%   £2000 or £250 each

so paying 10% of a full field to a very similar payout structure to Event 2.

It all looks great Tighty apart from one tiny thing, the money "bubble" where it goes from £250 to £650.

At this stage it will be hand for hand with eleven players and uneven tables.

Would it not be possible for the money to change with an even number of players ?

 ;scarymoment;

Does this mean that APAT members who have just paid for the online subscription can play in the online satellite for a seat into the "live" main event and claim the prize even if they havent paid for a "full" subscription?

GL guys - hope it all goes smoothly.

I think the satellites are a good move as it at least gives those who can't make the online sales phase an alternative means of trying to get in.  No method you come up with is ever going to suit everyone but at least now you've given people an alternative option.

I also think the 8pm start time for sales is much better than the previous 'window'.  In reality, the window didn't really avoid the inevitable 'clickfest' so at least now there's less waiting around.

Personally, I think APAT has done everything that people could reasonably expect from the feedback of the earlier events so credit to them for this.  Here's hoping I can make it in this time around, as the Newcastle event was great fun.

The main cardroom holds 100+, they are giving us the restaurant area for extra space/tables the first day

which is very nice of them!

A quick question:

You know the satelites on Stars, will it be 1 x seat for every $150 in the, or just 10 seats guaranteed no matter how many entrants. Also if it is 10 seats and there is money leftover, will this be paid out in the satelite event or in the Cardiff event?

two satellites

5 seats available in each. Each winner gets a fifth of the prize pool in effect to cover seat cost and expenses

In time for future events I hope we'll be able to expand both the live and online satellite qualifying schedule

" £10 + £3 satellite "  can you charge £3 registration fee ? I thought you could only charge 10% registration fee if it's being held in a casino .

A pity about the dates, purely through a Scottish perspective. That is the same weekend as the first of Galas British poker tour in the Edinburgh Maybury. With over 20 live satellites throughout Scotland and numerous online sats it will occupy a lot of the Scottish boys who would otherwise be down in Wales.
Good luck with the event however, hope a blonde takes it down!

Unfortunatly I feel let down, which is a shame because I like what APAT are doing. Will the schedule for season 2 be set in stone rather than on an event by event basis?
My moan comes as i have booked 3 holidays at work to go to events, 1 for the last one in newcastle and 2 for this one in Wales (was the 3rd then the 10th) and yet again the date moved. I know i wouldn't be guaranteed a seat but i still need to book holidays in advance.

Now i have got that off my chest , the sats etc. sound great!

Hi Ladyskye,

Yes, Season Two Dates will be firm & fixed.

Season One, Venue-wise, has been a "challenge", what with disabled Access & this & that, but we are working iit out slowly, & it's wonderful to be working with Grosvenor.

Our apologies for the inconvenience it has caused you.

Purely with regards to APAT, and given the reasons for it's creation, I'm not keen on the merging of 'online' and 'live' play.
Live Satellites, great idea. Regional would be even better.
APAT, to me, is all about giving us mortals a chance to play proper poker in casinos.
Not picking holes, just offering feedback.

wanted to play the gala tour event in edinburgh but going to put that on the back burner incase i miss out on an apat seat

i know you guys are doing your best but if possible can you give us 5 weeks from conformation of a place to the date of the event

with only the 4 weeks notice the cost of travel can go up sharply hopefully because the flight i am planning is easyjet it wont be too much

now if i can win a seat next week then all problems will be solved

Had a very nice chat with inaugural winner Kinboshi in the bar last night (we even know what his name means...) and he was glowing in his report of his experience.  Sending players who may have only played live a few times out to an event like this current EPT is good for APAT and amateur players themselves.  He regaled us with final table detail from way back then, as well as some interesting hands from the Scandinavian Open, over beer (cheers, Daniel).  Although unlikely to be venturing all the way out of London to play one of these myself, I have been lurking, following the Tour's fledgling progress, which has been quick and successful.

I have no problem with the payout structure, and would only suggest, like Karabiner, that the final table of a tourney should always be 9-handed, and the bubble an even number, for the variety of good reasons I always harp on about.  For a full list, with added whingeing, PM me.

Good luck in Cardiff, all you who get seats, and Good luck Mr. Philips tomorrow.

A maximum of 120 players will be able to enter the satellite, and the seats plus the balance of available prize money will go to the top five players for expenses

How do I reserve a seat for the live satelite? Do I have to turn up at my local casino at 2pm, or can I reserve a seat over the phone? I tend to go to G Casino in Salford rather than the other Grosvenor which is also located nearby (becasue it's a million times smarter than my original stomping ground). I believe G Casino is part of the Grosvenor Group, so I should be ok to purchase a ticket from there, shouldn't I?

You can reserve a seat in the live satellite through your local Grosvenor from 2pm on Saturday.  You cannot make a phone reservation unfortunately.

Hotel news

Sadly there is a complication because the event weekend clashes with the Carling Cup Final at the Milenium Stadium

This will between Chelsea/Wycombe and Spurs/Arsenal so a sell out there is fairly assured

I am advised that hotel rates are already high, however the football  finalists are not settled until AFTER the ticket buying date for this event

It may be an idea to book roooms now, allowing plenty of time to cancel should you not get a seat and know you have certainty of accomoadtion should you get that seat...

In the meantime we'll chase that hotel deal with Grosvenor, but it looks less possible now

i know you guys are doing your best but if possible can you give us 5 weeks from conformation of a place to the date of the event

this point is perfectly understood

this time it was a long negotiation with a major venue provider that limited our ability to give masses of notice but having Grosvenor hosting an event should be excellent long term news for all APAT members, for example with the possibility of regional qualifying in Series Two .

We did though put the event back towards the end of the month to help as much as possible

Does this mean that APAT members who have just paid for the online subscription can play in the online satellite for a seat into the "live" main event and claim the prize even if they havent paid for a "full" subscription?

yes Matt

Will the online satellites be password protected to avoid non-APAT members from playing? If so when will we find out the password for Sundays tourney? I received an email this morning that gave me the password for the Middle Eastern open (although i could have guessed it anyway :D) but there was no mention of a password for the satellite.

yes it is the same password as for Saturday's online event

We pride ourselves on having tough password codes to crack!

What happens if someone wins money in an online APAT event or wins a seat in an online APAT satellite without being a member because "they got the password off a mate"?

It is a fact of life that in the age of forums, MSN etc that any password sent out to hundreds of members can be passed on by anyone unscrupulous.

I expect, even though there has not been an issue so far, we need to take things to the next level of password security before long.

Thats why i asked - am surprised that there hasn't yet been anyone cash in an online tourney on stars who isn't an APAT member (maybe we're all very honest) but i wondered what steps the APAT would take if someone were to finish top 3 in an online APAT tourney or wins a seat into the "live" event when they aren't a member.

(just for when i bubble in 6th on sunday in the satellite i can still live in hope that one of the top 5 turns out to be illegible!! :D)

If there are concerns about password security, it might be worth having a word with Stars about issuing tickets instead (like they did for the online forum challenge thingy)?  Or is that just for freerolls?

Actually, the 'whole bloody point of APAT' was to give people like me, who don't live anywhere near a casino, the affordable chance to play against good players in a proper environment by way of a gentle and friendly introduction.
I can play online satellites til the cows come home, but that won't help me to become accustomed to casinos.

That might make no sense to you, but it does to me.

I was really looking forward to playing this one as i'm only a 45 min drive away from Cardiff and didn't manage to get a seat for the English event.  It's my mother's 60th B'day on the 24th, so no way i can get out of that.  Looks like i'm going to have to wait for the next series to start.

Good luck to all Blondes that manage to get a seat.

The prize money will get split equally amongst the top five finishers.  With 114 runners and 20 minutes to go, that will give each some expenses money, when the cost of the seats has been deducted.

Two third place finishes in Pot Limit Omaha for $700 total profit and a second place finish at $50 no limit hold em for an extra $3100 profit.

Cheers my son, and congrats on your results, nice.

Moved to Dewi's table just before break but been unlucky and i need chips....

Apologies to all at my table last night.  My broadband kept losing it's internet connection.  It's been an intermittant problem for a while now, but last night was the worse it's been.  Made even more infuriating when the line dropped as I got dealt AA.  ;grr;

I've been onto Orange about it.  This means I may have to skip Tuesday's sat and try my luck in the melée for registration on Saturday.

I'm in the "my screen went a bit funny, but I think I'm in" category.   :dontask:

My payment got accepted, so that's a start.

Just waiting for final confirmation.  ;popcorn;

we'll publish it tonight, when Des gets home

There has been a positive development related to the event that we have finalised, and whats more Des is busy working today on the "day" job. I know, how naive!

Positive development theory 1- Strippers in the 1 hour break (hopefully female but would settle for either!)

Positive development theory 2- More doh added to the prize pool

Positive development theory 3- Grosvenor Cardiff taken on more than 2 staff per shift

Positive development theory 4- Everyone gets to go to the EPT

Positive development theory 5- Adding prawn vol au vonts to the buffet (if there is one?)

And to tikays comment- a strippers a stripper at the end of the day. But it will be the firs case ever of 2 strippers being paid to keep their clothes on!!!!
