If he did the former he hit a set and he has done the latter - it's actually quite good.

Im sorry, but what an absolutely awful programme. Im sure anyone who has never had a bet may be interested, but it is condescending and patronising. bad choice of presenter IMO.

Robbie Box in "Big Deal" was a better advertisement for a gambler.

Poor, poor, poor.

The programme would be better without that idiot that presents it .   I liked Antonio Esfariandi's house, thats what you get for winning a WPT title.

I watched 'Million Dollar Cash Game' on sky.  Mike the Mouth "Gus is an idiot. He will be broke soon",  " I am the most unlucky guy. It has always been this way".   :D

I couldn't disagree more - this is the first programme I've seen for a while about gambling that doesn't have a negative agenda.

The presenter is just gambling and talking to gamblers, I don't think he's trying to "represent" anyone.

if wanted to represent gamblers as buffoons, he did his job well. Dumb programme, lets hope next episodes "poker special" is an improvement, i wont hold my breath.

I watched this tonight and thought it was pretty entertaining. Didn't seem to have the shock 'gambling is evil' style of many other programmes of this type. Though I think maybe episode 3 is dedicated to addictive gambling?

Same Roger Barton the bookmaker that was crying like mad on Saturday night at Romford dogs when i had £1000 @5-2 on a dog that returned 5-4. Won a short head in an A1 and he started telling me I was involved in race fixing and not to bet with him again. Laughable.

No need to wait for a re-run, I will summarise for you.

Sikh gent decides to have a gamble with 7k ...so he has a little punt on the dogs, a little punt on the horses, roulette etc... then he gets into the proper side of gambling and walks into a swimming pool fully clothed (including turban) for a bet, then plays a bloke who had breast implants (for a bet) at table tennis .... not sure how much he had left at the end of the programme because I had long lost the will to live by then.

Apparantly the next show has footage of a Rob Yong home game ... lets hope the narrative does it justice.

I completely disagree. I thought it ws an entertaining and well put together show. Neither condescending nor patronising and I think Hardeep Singh Kohli was a good choice of presenter. I particularly liked the emotion he showed when his bets won or lost, which was quite engaging.  Trying to bargain with Esfandiari over the terms of his jump in the swimming pool bet and complaining when he was hustled at table tennis showed that it was a true learning curve for him and highlighted the more colourful side of gambling.

Did you really think it was that poor a show or did you decide that during the first 10 mins of it then stick to your opinion?

Yes Jon I really did think it was poor, I tried to see it from a casual viewers point of view ... And all i could think was people watching and saying god, all gamblers must be right idiots.

No mention of studying form for horses or dogs, no mention of hours spent scouring results and keeping records and notes of "eyecatching" dogs or horses.... No mention of bankroll management, No mention of any costs involved such as flights and hotel in vegas , entry to race meets etc, all stuff that a gambler has to factor in to his profit and loss calculations
No, we get fully clothed pool jumping and a table tennis game versus a bloke with norks.

FFS someone make a fking programme about gamblers that show them to be more than a joke.

I would say that all that stuff would be more suitable for an entirely different type of porgramme. The purpose of this show was to entertain, not to descend into a grumbling bad beat story about the cost of living expenses for gamblers.  The purpose of this show was to show that gambling, in it's various forms is now an integral part of the leisure industry. An in depth discussion on reading form and bankroll management would have absilutely no relevance to the casual viewer at all. In terms of its audience and trying to show the fun side of gambling, it succeeded, but also presented some balance by discussing the other side of the equation - that the majority of people gambling lose and that the fantasy that is Las Vegas was built with money that gamblers lost. 'Gambling is fun, but be careful' was the overiding message of this programme.

I would not say that it painted gamblers out to be idiots. You may perceive Hardeep as an idiot, I percieve him as self depricating comedian and quite endearing in this respect. In this show Hardeep was the outsider having a go at gambling, not a fully fledged member of the gambling community. As far as making gambling people out to be idiots, John McCrirrick does a much better job of this every weekend.

With all the bad press poker and gambling gets in the media, surely its about time someone made a programme which shows the positive side... hell, give me a budget and a fkin camera and i will do it myself !! ;)

Kev

Did you see the dispatches programme on Monday?

That's what I call negative, with a reporter deciding on an agenda and looking for evidence however contrived to support this and completely ignoring evidence to the contrary.

In contrast last night's programme although in a style that some might not like was generally neutral.

try and decipher the question.

So you think that anyone who doesn't share your minority opinion must have some sort of agenda?

The only connection whatsoever between myself and the programme was that they happened to film part of it in a bookies where I won a lot of money.

As I've said before any programme about gambling that doesn't deliberately set out to tarnish someone is a good one in my opinion.

I can understand that some might not like the style of the presenter - but in comparison to most "journalists" who normally make such progs I'm sure even you would agree that (although in your opinion others might have done it better) this kind of presenter was a better choice.

Title: Re: £50 says you'll watch this...
Post by: bobby1 on January 24, 2007, 04:17:35 PM
I've just watched it and I enjoyed it too. I thought it showed that gambling can be fun and profitable and was therefore different to many shows that are just trying to show gambling and gamblers in a bad light.

The presenter seemed OK and he genuinely felt the buzz when his horse almost won and felt the disappointment when he had made a bad bet on the table tennis, these are all emotions that us gamblers have gone thru day after day so I thought he captured gambling in the right way.

I'm looking forward to tonights show

He tarnished everyone who considers themselves a gambler IMO.

It wasnt necessarily the style of the presenter that made the show garbage, more the content.

Like i said, i will have another look tonight and hope that the content improves, and as tonights show is billed as a "poker episode"  im looking forward to it.

Yes, but what he was referring to was the other players' analysis of how he (Hardeep) played his cards.

Don't get why Hardeep didn't bet the flop and take it there. Tilly would surely have given him credit for the ace and passed the deuces. Thought Laak did a good job of making him feel even more uncomfortable after the F word incident.

Yes I know. What I found funny was the three others all analysing his play and why his bluff didn't work.

Cut to Brian. "I really don't care."

yeah matusow swears all the time on high stakes poker

laak was playing at that time too

it was no big deal

I guess he was deliberately getting him very uncomfortable once the game had started

personally if i was playing way outta ma bankroll to that degree i would need a man nappy

but im sure everyone here if they could would take a chunk outta their bankroll just for the opportunity to have a shot at the big names there

glad to see our own 'el blondie took it down

i wonder where cins finest tony chessa was??

It wouldn't have been so bad except no one else seemed to make any effort to make him feel at ease - all came across as very cliquey and not a comfortable experience for an outsider.  That could well all be in the editing though.

Good show again, nice to see punting and emotion when punting put in a decent light, not sure about the Hellmouth arse licking tho, I mean he got 5 out of ten wrong.....

ive since seen him around and loads of people dont have much to say for him

anyways he did the exact opposite of putting me at ease and i had a thoroughly bad experience for my 1st time playing live

but that is this guys edge and u gotta respect that even if you dislike it

Yes i agree maybe due to editing , but you could see how uncompfortable he was , i was squirming for him .
Glad my first and last live event was brilliant due to people making me feel so at ease  :)

Helmuth is a legend, 5 out of 10, maaaaaaan he's amazing at this, can see why the presenter got so excited. I'd have gone for five trues followed by five falses, would that be any worse? Also, a bloke with a Scottish accent (slight, but it's there) wearing a pink turban trying to persuade you he's not from Scotland and pink is not his favourite colour is never gonna work.

Can just imagine Helmuth's reaction when he sees he was not given the point for 'I've never lost a game of heads-up' which Hardeep claims is true....which followed directly from him doing his money to both Steve Lipscomb and Daniel Negreanu...maybe these were 'one on one' games?

Negreanu's comment when he answered the door  " You are the first naked man to ever come to my door"  :D .  I like Daniel Negreanu, he seems like a thoroughly decent person and is great for poker

Couldnt agree more but i have to say i think phil laak is brilliant. His poker syle is unique and t does work. A very very clever boy aswell, and born in Ireland!

Hardeep's been playing live poker for years. Yes he was out of his depth and was thrown by the fact he was playing poker 'superstars' but he could have reacted better. Like saying GFY to Laak who was obviously trying to tilt him up as you don't get to where he is without being able to handle 'bad language'. Hardeep's mistake was in trying to kiss arse and allow himself to be outsmarted/belittled.

Laak gets on his high horse when Hardeep swears.  This from a player who's nicknamed himself after a bloke who killed three and injured dozens with his mail bombs.

Go figure.

Just watched it.  It's all well in hindsight saying he should have just told Laak to GFH but it would have taken balls of steel to say it at the time.

Was painful watching though but Hardeep looked like he's been playing 10 minutes, not a few years.  Not sure how long he lasted in the comp for but surely after half an hour or so he'd have felt better?

I meant GFY in tongue in cheek fashion. Turning the tables on Laak by suggesting he must have led a very sheltered 'poker life' to take such offense at the F word. Laak is smart and I think he'd have enjoyed/respected that 'banter' rather than the apologetic ass kissin approach Hardeep took. I just think it was a case of a rabbit being caught in the headlights as Hardeep is used to playing live albeit in a home game. On HSP Laak's good value for the side comments.

Agree completely.  Hardeep bottled it.  He should have hit back at Laak - who was exaggerating the offence he took from the swearing.  Instead, he did end up like the proverbial rabbit in the headlights.

He just sat down and lost just over £800 in a game with Rob Yong, S.Nowab et al and this after having lost £200 in his weekly home game!!

Doesn't sound like he deals with 'banter' very well at all. Also, wtf is he not preparing properly if he's not a pro surely some sleep might be a good idea before he sits down to play!

I was actually there and watching this guys and it wasn't at all like it came out on tv!!!.
Also as i remember it was a $1000 sng and not the stated $2000 , as i would have played as well but turned up about 10 mins after it had started.......gutted !!.

That 1 comment from Phil Laak made him look a bit of a toser, but far from it as he's a really nice guy.

I read an interview with Hardeep who said he really liked Laak aswell and they got on well enough. He also understood that Phil was taking the piss out of him a bit and judged it all to be friendly enough.

Didn't catch the poker episode, but those backgammon players would take some beating when it comes to rudeness and disdain!
