Title: my start to the year
Post by: littlemissC on January 29, 2007, 02:58:36 PM
so,ive had quite a good live poker start.3 finals at notts(6th,6th,4th last night) and got deep in to my first attempt at a smaller festival comp(250plh,luton).my live game has improved loads over the last few months and ive grown in confidence with my style of play.the thing that is letting me down is online.now im not a big player by any means, but ive made it my mission for this year to qualify for as many festivals as i can online.i could really do with some advise on the best way to approach these satalites from people who win seats alot.

thanks

FRAN

I had the same problem a while back, I made a stack in my first year playing at Notts Gala but never did aswell online. Finally it clicked for me, I found that playing online you have far less information than you do live so I reverted to playing more ABC poker online. Also when I get deepish in a tourney I will always take the coinflip and risk either going bust or very deep, I dont make the small cash positions that much.

You have also got to remember that the crowd in Notts has a fairly high proportion of gamblers, so a strong, steady game will always make money there. I actually play more online now just because its I prefer playing 3/4 touneys in an evening which helps even out the variation for me. I only go to Gala about once or twice a month now even though I'm only 10 mins away, although I might more when the smoking stops, but by then we will have DTD!

Cash games online are another story......

I have probably won more than my fair share of packages online so ill try give some advice!

There are stacks of articles on sattlite strategy, I beleive ariston wrote one, ive never read it but I recall it being talked about a lot and praised heavily, maybe some1 come link to it if im not making it up, lol

I think the majority of people get caught up in the whole sattelite aspect why too early and start just trying to survive from a long way out, this works when say the sat is for an online comp and a lot of seats are awarded but doesnt work when trying to win packages for the big live events IMO. These are usually medium-large fields with prizes for only maybe 1, 2 or 3 ppl. In my opinion you should neglect the fact that its a sattelite for as long as possible, play your normal mtt game, try to accumulate chips, looking to get in a position to win just as in a normal mtt. You should be able to pick up on the people who are just trying to survive from too far out and punish them.

Unless you amass a ridiculous chip lead that allows you to fold to a seat from a long way out, i wouldnt even bother changing my gameplan until the final table (say 1-3 packages awarded) Then its when strategy comes in, you need to take stock of your position compared to the other 8 or 9 players and devise a gameplan. Who is playing too tight, who is playing too loose (ie a big stack taking unnecessary risks) and plan to get their chips.

To summarise really, I hardly change my game at all in sattelites, just use a bit of common sense at the business end, pick situations wisely. I think also ppl make mistakes when they try and deviate from their normal game, moving out of their comfort zone just because its a sattelite!

Hope this helps a little, good luck qualifying for big land based events!

When you say distracted do you mean bored? If so thats partly why I play more than one tourney at a time, then you can focus on playing the good hands and just fold the rubbish and you are kept busy. Hopefully you will make it deep in one so you can focus on that when it gets to the key point. I will even close down other tourneys in the early stages at that point just to maximise my focus on the business end of the tourney where I may cash.

I get bored too - but i find I loose games when doing other things.  I hate doing it but I try and concentrate on other players, their tells etc. I find it a chore but it does pay off - you are more in the game and info does sink in. Tighty has an entire book of Luton players tells - wont let anyone see it but I have a tell I cant fix so he reliable says!

Good luck and say hello when you'rer in Luton :-)

you must simulate a similar environment be it online or live. And the best way, IMO, is music. But when at home dont have it on the radio. always wear earphones. It will knock only help in not hearing the distractions that can occur but also provides a relief from the monotony that a long MTT can be but does not lead to your eyes leaving the screen. There may not be as many obvious tells as live tourneys may present but betting patterns can be observed and in some cases even how long they take to respond can be used generally to help you. There is no room for distarction in any other sport or game so dont start accepting it as part of poker...its not! It requires discipline and as a woman i believe you already have an advantage over men in that respect!

Also whilst on your computer with your headphones on, you should also be wearing your shades  ;shame;

Seriously though Fran, i think the main key to online poker is patience and discipline, that is where most people fail.
