Title: Any computer geniuses , help !! Post by: DTD-ACES on January 30, 2007, 11:12:51 AM Hi all
I hope this is a problem someone recognises and can help. When i first boot up my computer it takes 3-4 attempts to get it going as until then it loads as far as the home screen with icons and screen saver but as soon as the task bar starts to load the screen goes blank , i have a Dell 20" monitor and when i push one of the buttons on the front it says it is in power save mode but moving the mouse or pressing buttons does as suggested does nothing , i talked to Dell and by starting the computer in safe mode was able to prove it isn't the monitor . I went into control panel and changed power save to never from 20 minutes but it still happens. I have run spydoctor and AVG , i have no trojans/viruses so before i call out someone to fix this problem anyone know what could be causing this. Cheers ACES Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !! Post by: happybhoy on January 30, 2007, 12:03:37 PM Have you installed new graphics drivers, graphics card or is it a new monitor or have you changed any of the display settings. At a rough guess I'd guess it might be a driver problem seeing as it's happening as windows is starting up the services and that it works okay in safe mode. If you've changed anything recently it might be worth trying restoring your puter back to before the change and see if that fixes it. That's just my best guess though, I'm more of a code monkey than a hardware guy.

Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !! Post by: boldie on January 30, 2007, 01:14:20 PM uninstall that horrid DtD stuff... ;)
Seriously though. I called one of the IT geeks from my old job and he says..(and I believe him) When the taskbar loads Win XP also starts up some of those programs. One of these programs is shutting your PC down (effectively). This was proven to be correct when it all worked in safe mode (in Safe mode none of those programs are started). Check all the programs in your taskbar and if possible delete them. Also check to see if any of them start automatically on start up (Programs like Morpheus and anti viral software ussually do) if possible change the setting for that within the program. don't ask me who to do all that. I would just delete them one by one and try again, then as soon as I had found the problem program I would reinstall the rest and be done with it :) Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !! Post by: Bongo on January 30, 2007, 01:19:11 PM You can disable them all at startup with msconfig... No need to uninstall.
Then reenable them one by one until you find the problem. Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !! Bongo to the rescue..and I'm sure the computergeek must have mentioned that to me aswell...my attention- paying skills are laughable at the best of times..when speaking to a geek over the phone they are essentially non-existent. Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !! Post by: ifm on January 30, 2007, 01:27:13 PM You actually don't need anything under "startup" in msconfig ticked for it to boot up properly, under win98 you needed "systray" and something else but they have been removed from the list since those days.
I only have my firewall and antivirus ticked in there and regularly have to untick rogue programs to stop them opening when i boot up. Qtask and realshed are both pains in the ass as they continually reactivate themselves. Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !! Hardly bongo to the rescue - I'm too busy to write a detailed answer! Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !! Hardly bongo to the rescue - I'm too busy to write a detailed answer! my friend, I hate to say it as it might sound cruel..but a more detailed answer from a computer geek only makes people want to either go to sleep or, in extreme cases, kill the geek. ;) All us regular neanderthals want when we have a problem is a solution that those of us who talk in grunts can understand :) Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !! Then type 'msconfig' and list here all the items under 'startup' that have a tick beside them. otherwise you can just delete them all and maybe retick the ones you really want. If the problem persists you have a virus. You need to disable system restore, run an antivirus and antispy in safe mode (F8), then reboot, run them again. If that doesn't work, fall to your knees, and cry 'save me, Dr boldie'. Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !! Post by: Bongo on January 30, 2007, 04:09:16 PM It is an odd one as it could be many things, would probably be far easier hands on.
It's also odd that it works every 3-4 times. Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !! Tried this , individually it starts so rather than combine i just allowed AVG and MSN , everything seems to be working fine now. Thanks to all for your help ACES Title: Re: Any computer geniuses , help !!
