I would be interested in peoples thoughts on: LIVE PLAY:

Do you get more of a buzz/feeling of satisfaction from playing Cash games or tournaments?

Personally i never play cash but i can imagine the adrenalin rush when involved in a "big pot" must be quite something.

I know the feeling of satisfaction i get when i win a tournament, especially if i feel i have played well.

It depends on the buyin, usually cash though.

Tourney for me for sure.

I like the whole tourney feel, as a competition and game.
The change of speed, tactics as blinds go up, bubbles approach etc.

Ring games are more bread and butter for pro's etc, kind of like being permanently on the first level of a tourney.
Also my biggest pet peeve in ring games is when you see a bad player get lucky and clean someone out...you are just rubbing your hands together when he decides to get up and run...grrrr, worse if the beat was against you.

Definately tourney for me. i do enjoy the cash games and tend to do a wee bit better in them but am always on edge knowing one wrong move (or lucky hit by my opponent) can cost me a severe amount.

Tourneys I feel I can relax a bit more. Most points covered in previous posts.

There must be some pros who never ever sit in a cash game?  every interview and article I read about Pro players, they always say that they make their rent money,etc from playing cash games and a tournament is a bonus.  Surely there must be some that only play tournaments?   Do you have to be able to play cash games either online or Live to be a full time player?

I reckon those guys are talking about live games. Online you can make a living by never sitting in a cash game. But the live tourneys (the bigger ones most of the pro's that will be interviewed play) involve a pretty high buy-in + travel expenses and all that. Those tournaments also attract a fair number of runners and the variance is a lot higher (you can't simply scrape into the money to make enough money back for your travels expenses and all that.) That's why cash games seem to be soo important.

Tournaments for me - but then thats because i don't play live cash games in UK. Have tried live cash games a few times, once at the WPT at atlantis, once in Vegas during WSOP main event visit in 05 and then again in Vegas last year as part of the "blonde betting bonanza". (anywhere with plenty of american tourist fishes!! ;))

Not that cold in the stadium itself - must confess that poor monkey balance means i've never been on the ice itself. Its a lot easier to keep track of the puck watching a live game provided you havent got a 23 stone brute continually jumping up and down in front of you and once you get used to it on tv it isnt too hard there either :)

If you think ice hockey is obscure then i won't mention that i used to play crown green bowls at county level when i was a wee nipper monkey ;)

lol, its been a few years (about 15 to be honest) but i think i still have my Tommy Taylor 2-10's in the attic somewhere. whether the back would take the strain nowadays i'm not sure though - i'm getting on a bit now!! ;)

As for tourn v cash, in big MTTs you can invest a lot of time for little or no result at times. You only normally invest a fixed amount of money, however. In cash games you can lose a LOT in a short period. Tournaments are normally far more friendly, it's more of a sport. Cash games can be quite dehumanising sometimes, someone out to take you for all you have and you the same.
I read a thread on a forum about big cash player losses, some are around 12-30 thousand US$ on their worst days. That's a lot of money. Doesn't even cost that to buy into the WSOP main event...

Cash games for me. Much more enjoyable and more profitable.

Having only recently started playing live, I still really enjoy both disciplines but if I had to choose then the banter and pick-up--the-chair-with-no-hands situations delivered by cash hands probably shades it.

I prefer tourneys to cash

I am much more prone to "tilt" in cash games

For example if I have $100 dollars and some clown busts me down to say $30. I get frustrated and start to chase the $70 dollars the end result is that I usually loose the remaining $30.

Now if the same thing happens to me in a tournament and I go from 10,000 to 3,000 chips on a bad beat then I know what I need to do. There is a logical strategy which involves no emotion. i.e what are the blinds?  what is my 'M' etc.... and then it is just a case of picking your spot in order to get back in the game.

In short I just play better in tournaments

I am full time, but i never play cash online!  After playing tournaments for years and then trying to learn the discipline of cash - I struggled.  I survive with out it BUT I do enjoy to play some live cash.  I will do it for fun rather than a necessity and get my ass kicked sometimes.

I think you gotta really work on what you are good at and minimise what you suck at, even if it is a laugh sometimes!!
