Anyone got sky broadband ?? Just wondering if it's any good. I know this bit might sound abit stupid but if you take out the professional instalation you get a fella to come and fix it all up, now obviously he comes with a wireless router so it's easy enough to fix it up to a laptop but is it as easy to do it to a pc ? Just wondered because i have both and was abit worried in case we cant use the pc. Dave

you obviously have to get a different wireless card that normally come with an antenna attched to it. Its simple, just take off back of tower and slot it in and install. no different to lappy really.

Do most pc's come with wireless card already installed ?? how do i find out if my pc's got one installed ?? if not how much are they and where from please. Thank you. Dave

pretty sure your pc wont have one. Follow this link and you can see which type of card would suit you best. Then maybe when you find round, shop round the net to see if you can get it cheaper.

Sky will sell you a wireless card for the desktop. I assume the engineer would install that for you too.

However, if your desktop is within easy reach of a telephone socket you don't have to go wireless with the desktop. The engineer will connect the router to the phone line and connect the desktop to the router with a supplied cable.

My father, sister and father-in-law all have Sky BB - the £0/month base package. It does what it says on the tin and worked straight out the box.

yeh thats it. Should do the job fine! and im sure its not that hard to install.

This would be my preferred route.

I'm with Sky Broadband, I didn't get the guy to install it at all, I just got them to mail me the box and plugged it into the back of the PC with an ethernet cable.

It's quite easy; the only snag I had was trying to activate the connection (I called customer service for this; if you ever call Sky customer service, don't let the first person you speak to go through the troubleshooting list, get him/her to contact a technician. I spent two hours on the phone going over the stuff I knew full well wasn't the problem, only for my agent to finally give up and put me through to the technician anyway who sorted it in five minutes.)

So if he does all this will i be able to type in a network key on my laptop that was put on the desktop ? or seeing as the desktop will not be wireless how do i log on to the net through the router ?? or will he set the desktop up with supplied cable the install the relavent software on to my laptop so it has its own network key. Im confussed help me . Dave

Hi Dave,

As the desktop is connected by cable, it doesn't need a key. Routers generally assume that if something is attached by cable then it's probably allowed access  ;)

The engineer will enter the wireless key (password) into your laptop so it can access the router as well. The key is on a label on the router so it's easy to find if you later want to add a 2nd laptop, allow a visitor to use your kit on your connection etc. etc.

Both the desktop and the laptop can then access the net 24/7 and simultaneously.

My girlfriend has Sky broadband and I conect to it wirelessly (is that a word?)
I am having big dropout problems with the wireless side of it. The PC that is hardwired to the router is fine but my connection stops and starts quite a lot, it doesn't make playing poker very enjoyable.
The support were not much help, telling me I should get my laptop checked out, I use it regularly on two other wireless networks. Upon reading forums there are quite a few others that suffer the same way with wireless.
It might be worth buying a long ethernet cable just in case you need it in an emergency.
