Title: Matthew Upson, value ? Post by: Karabiner on January 31, 2007, 06:29:17 PM West Ham have bought him for an initial £6M rising to £7.5M on appearances.
I watched him quite a lot when he was a gooner, and he is fairly classy but lacks a yard of pace for a top-class defender IMO. He is also prone to the occasional rush of blood and embarassing boo-boo's. He was very unlucky with injuries whilst at Highbury and missed a couple of seasons. I'm not sure if we get any cut from a sell-on clause (we sold him for £2.5M), but the price still seems high to me. I wouldn't be surprised if he is also on a Neill (£60K) per week wages too ;) Title: Re: Matthew Upson, value ? Post by: The Baron on January 31, 2007, 06:40:09 PM No value at all.
Same league as Bent for 18 mil ad Lucas Neill on 60k per week. West Ham are a mini Chelsea. No VFM whatsoever. Title: Re: Matthew Upson, value ? Post by: ifm on January 31, 2007, 11:14:25 PM He's well worth it unfortunately :(
Injuries have dogged him for long periods, without those he would be an established England regular by now. Title: Re: Matthew Upson, value ? Post by: Nem on February 01, 2007, 12:15:05 AM Very good player.
They have paid slightly over the odds, but if they beat relegation, money well spent Title: Re: Matthew Upson, value ? Shouldn't the fact that he's injury prone make him a risky purchase, or is he just unlucky rather than a complete Darren Andertonite. Title: Re: Matthew Upson, value ? Post by: RioRodent on February 01, 2007, 07:24:50 AM He'll be even better value in the summer - for someone else - if we don't escape relegation!!!

Unlikely, as no other club will pay that for him! ;) Title: Re: Matthew Upson, value ? Post by: turny on February 01, 2007, 05:14:05 PM doesnt the best central defender in europe lack a little pace?

Post by: Triple X on February 01, 2007, 06:04:38 PM Lot of money for west ham to pay but they are desperate
Upson never got a proper chance at Arsenal but i think he lacks a yard of pace and more crucial than anything he lacks confidence. For me that is so important. You can have all the ability but if you dont have the confidence / arrogance to go with it, you suffer. As a result - i think he will never make greatness but hes a decent centreback although i think there are a few at that level around. Interestingly, didnt Everton pay not much less for Lescott? Just shows the silly money involved with English players. Upson certanly is better than Lescott Title: Re: Matthew Upson, value ?
