Title: Free poker book! Post by: Mark S. on September 23, 2005, 10:12:31 AM As I'm new to this FORUM I'd like to properly introduce myself to all those of you who may not know much about me as a poker player.
I'm offering the first 20 people who reply to this posting a FREE copy of my book 'How To Win At Texas Hold'Em - All You Need To Know'. Free book + free posting + free everything. There is to be an audio-book release for this sometime soon (as soon as the publishers - Pearson - can get their act together) but for now I'm happy to let people who are new to the game of Texas Hold'Em read this compact little book - FREE! Just reply to this post and email me with your full name & address to ukpoker@hotmail.com. It'll be in the post on Monday! The book is based on lessons I gave at the Fitzwilliam Club in Dublin where over 75 new players sat in over a period of 2 years! No doubt there'll be the usual boo-artists but thats okay! No I don't want a book by the way (although I could probably do with one by my last few months results ;) )

Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: yt on September 23, 2005, 01:06:27 PM and are these the reviews of your book?
Customer Reviews 1/5 Two good things about this book., April 4, 2005 Reviewer: HuskerPete "Poker Beginner" (Omaha, NE) - See all my reviews I wanted some basics to get into $5 dollar single table tournaments online and it worked for that. You will definitely need something more advanced as you progress into higher limits and this will not be useful for 'free' games. Take two things from this book: 1. The starting hands based on position 2. How to calculate the 'outs' (a nice chart in the back of the book) Adjust your starting hands based on your willingness to take risks and understand your outs based on the chart in the back. The rest is pretty basic and as everyone has stated thus far there are a considerable number of mistakes. If you are going to buy another book watch the poker tournaments on T.V and find a player you most enjoy watching play, that you trust and that wins and go buy his book. There are no books that will teach you everything and there is no template for perfect play. Was this review helpful to you? (Report this) 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: 1/5 Don't waste even ONE of 5 bucks!, January 6, 2005 Reviewer: Matt B. (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews Ditto the other two reviews on this book. I thank my lucky stars that I kept my $5 in my wallet and borrowed this from the library. I give my co-reviewers A LOT of credit for sticking with this book - I quit reading after about page 15. I found no less than FOUR typos/incorrect statements on ONE page. My favorite botched advice is, early in the book, that: when holding a low pair [3's] and hitting a set [trip 3's] on the flop, one should be very wary of a pair of overcards on the board (in this case, a Q on the flop, and then another on the turn), because even one Q buried in an opponents hands will cause his trips to beat yours. Oh yeah? Last I checked, when holding a set and having the board pair-up, I've now got a FULL HOUSE! I think that beats 3 Q's!! Sheesh! This book is god awful. The typos are brutal, and the flat-out wrong advice is even worse. Don't waste your time. Was this review helpful to you? (Report this) 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful: 1/5 Not Worth Your 5 Bucks, October 5, 2004 Reviewer: Brandon "itsbrandon" (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews I agree with the previous reviewer, and pricing this book a few bucks higher to get a proof-reader would have been well worth the money. This book is littered with typos. Every few pages, I have to stop and try to figure out what the author meant to say. An example would be: Page 24 "...Say you have J and 10 facing one opponent on the turn. You have an outside straight draw with a board of 2 5 8 Q and only the river card left to make it. Any 8 or king will finish this straight for you..." I may be new at poker, but even I know you'll need a 9 to finish that straight, and a king will be worthless. Of course, he had typo'ed the board cards with an "8" instead of a "9", but this is just one of the many examples of the confusing and annoying mistakes you're sure to discover in this book. I would encourage you to search further throughout amazon, and deeper into your pocket book, for -- simply put -- a better book. Was this review helpful to you? (Report this) 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful: Good short primer in need of a proofreader!, September 26, 2004 Reviewer: 2many2read (United States) - See all my reviews This is a 60-page overview of Texas Hold'em that surveys all aspects of the game from starting hands to postflop play and when to bluff. It discusses pot odds, bet odds and implied odds. There's a table in the back with the odds for your hand improving based on the outs you need. There's even a few pages about tournament play. It's standard stuff, but distilled down to essentials and graphically well-presented. So why only 3 stars? The book is filled with typos. Cards are described in the same sentence as spade [the symbol] and "s" -- but both things refer to the spade suit. (And "s" could well mean two starting cards of any one suit.) On page 32, he explains that you _should_ call when you do not make your queen-high flush. Huh? I've been folding my missed flushes. As Straham proclaims on the cover, the book is only "5 bucks." Maybe he should price the book higher and employ a proofreader. P.S. After seeing that the glossary --incredibly -- is not alphabetized, I wish I had given the book only two stars. but hey at least you got published! Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: TightEnd on September 23, 2005, 01:08:20 PM excellent reviews open goal, but they still need scoring you are cruel Adam, really!!! Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: Mark S. on September 23, 2005, 01:14:16 PM Interesting....you've pulled half a dozen reviews off AMAZON...!! Scary ;D
As I said in my first email I accept the boo, offside ref, gummy bear haters as well as the applause. Later tonight I'll respond with a dozen or so 'other reviews' from people having read the book. They'll counter the ones you've copied off Amazon. I'm sure, with all the people in the world, there are people that hate things with a passion. I'm sorry to see that you're one of them! Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: AdamM on September 23, 2005, 01:18:16 PM I would still like my free copy to make up my own mind.
please dont bring the other dozen reviews. perhaps yt will remove his post as a trade off Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: TightEnd on September 23, 2005, 01:20:16 PM yt how about removing the reviews?, people can see them just be linking to Amazon should they so wish

Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: Mark S. on September 23, 2005, 01:26:55 PM For whatever reason the member 'yt' has taken to rubbishing this offer!
There were certainly some issues with the book 'mainly typos' that I was unhappy with at publication but until a reprint is done (at Pearsons request) then unfortunately I, and the readers, have to live with them. I would very much like people to make up their own mind about whether or not the book is helpful to beginners rather than having so called players, like 'yt' take any opportunity to rubbish it and discredit the writer (me). Some facts of this book are: Published Sept 2004 Sales in the USA & Canada - 20,000 Sales in Europe - 5000 Sales elsewhere - 5000 Out of 30,000 buyers 'yt' has picked on 6 reviews from Amazon. Shame! Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: TightEnd on September 23, 2005, 01:32:42 PM OK, Mark...Enough!
I've never met you, but I know you are/were a controversial poster on THM. I also know that you stick to your guns to the "nth" degree and do not compromise. Conflict inevitably results. I am sure you have a lot to contribute on a lot of subjects but all of your posts so far have been either promoting yourself or your products, albeit this was dressed up in a "cute"fashion. Nonetheless...free publicity!. I don't know what insecurities you have that need you to do this but please, please (as someone that loves coming here ) don't continue in this vein A lot of people have worked very hard, through 48,000 posts and 1300 members to avoid it going down the route that make other forums nothing more than soapboxes where posters flame each other. Thanks Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: AdamM on September 23, 2005, 01:38:09 PM seconded
Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: TightEnd on September 23, 2005, 01:46:27 PM Mark, I have not at any point (nor has anyone else) suggested removing the original post.
All I have requested is that you seek to avoid unnecessary conflict, recognise the need for compromise and continue from there really....... So there's no need to blow it up into a huge "moderators please decide thing" Anyway...i'll leave this thread alone now All the best! Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: Heid on September 23, 2005, 01:50:24 PM This is very interesting. in terms of what my experience is with message boards and communities, the actions of Mark are quite strange, and have been treated by members of this site with suspicion/annoyance, as I would have expected.
The board , from my experience is a place where people are friendly, kind, straight down the line, and guard their carefully nurtured community feeling very carefully. You have to understand Mark, that your actions have not been those of a normal member who wants to join in the community, make friends, learn about poker, and generally have fun in what can be a brutal game. I am not sure whether you were aiming to self publicise, or genuinely thought that you were doing a friendly and "Hello I'm new have a pressie" kinda thing, but the context/tone of the offer seems to have been pitched a few octaves wrong. Not being anyone of note on here, apart from being someone who intensely enjoys their time here, I'd suggest you listen, lurk, read and then try again without trying to blow your own trumpet and quotes facts and figures, and just have fun. I'm absolutely not having a go, but I want you to understand that there are ways and means of making an entrance, and gaining respect, and I am not sure that your method is one of them :) Remember that yoiu have had issues in other palces, and a lot of people read and post in those palces, and with the best will in the world sometimes mud sticks, even if it hasn't been thrown rightly or not. Chill, man .. it's Friday :) Heid xx Title: Re: Free poker book! Post by: Robert HM on September 23, 2005, 01:56:33 PM Were you a diplomat in a previous life Heid? Nice post
Here's a copy of something I posted on the Moderator Decide thread:- Mark Tikay is in Southend at the moment and is obviously busy. It is a tough choice for him as it is a close call. Can we all just leave it for a few hours and stop posting here or on the initial thread, that way it will all cool down a bit and we can see the wood for the trees. Please don't anybody flame me by my suggesting we just keep the status quo as I am NOT saying DO NOT post but suggesting it as a stop gap, please. Title: Re: Free poker book! Jeez, I go away for 36 hours, & this blows up. Peace reigns in blonde, then this....... I am heartened by many of the excellent responses, including by Heid (what a Diamond find THAT young lady is turning out to be!), Tight End, Robert, & Iron, who has been brave & strong - I expect nothing less - in doing what he thinks is right. I think we all know what is right & wrong for blonde, and the spam issue has been debated, agreed, & put to bed, where it sleeps peacefully. I think the right course of action here is for me to write to Mark "off-Forum", via PM. I wanna be fair to him, so to comment further on Open Forum would be wrong. But I promise everyone this - nobody is gonna hijack your Forum. This is a happy place, a fun place, "poker with a smile", where many of us enjoy spending some time. That's the brief Dave & I agreed at Day One, & that remains the brief. We are gaining Members at a goodly rate, & Corporate Sponsors, who help to finance our fun & our Live Updates, & they do so because it's the place it is. So that's the way it will stay. Title: Poker Books On Their Way!! Post by: Mark S. on September 26, 2005, 10:21:28 AM I have today posted the books, as promised, to the first 20 people that repliedc to my original posting on Friday.
I understand why the post naming those recipients was taken off the forum but I wanted to be as open and transparent as I could be about who would be receiving them. If you saw the list then you'd be able to verify that there were 20 names on it. I apologise if I offended anyone whose name appeared on it and they wished to remain anonymous! Anyway...enjoy...and please let me know what you think of it...typo's and all! :) Title: Re: Poker Books On Their Way!! Post by: Robert HM on September 26, 2005, 10:26:15 AM Hi
I look forward to reading it when it arrives. Knowing my spelling I would notice the typos anyway. Just a thought, not a criticism. You start threads but are not in the habit of joining and adding to others, you obviously have a wealth of experience and your opinions could be of interest. As you are a B&M player why not give your 2 cents worth on the "advice please" thread recently started? Title: Re: Poker Books On Their Way!!
