I'm sure my river call here is pretty terrible since almost any small or medium pair plus the possible flush has me beat. But generally, am I destined to lose a large amount here or could I have played it better?

Also any thoughts on his play with the 77 would be welcomed.

Pre-flop and flop play is fine, as is his.

I'd fold to the turn raise against a lot of known opponents.

If you're going to call the turn, you should push it all-in though seeing as he only has $18 back: A lot of good players will min-raise the turn so that they can check the river behind if they have a hand they want to call you with but are not over confident about. E.g. TT in this example. It works out cheaper than just calling your turn bet, and then calling what would be a larger river bet, plus it makes you pay more if you did happen to be drawing with, say, AK.

However, as long as you make them pay the correct price for their implied odds then it's not a problem.

As a general rule, you need approx. 10/1 to play PPs against someone who can't lay down their AA/KK. (The odds of flopping your set AND them not hitting their set by the river.)

You lost 50BB and he paid 5BB pre-flop (10/1) - when either you or your opponent are short-stacked (50BB or less) then you're rarely going to get away from paying off a set.

Im not a fan of leading the turn here im happy to check call the turn and then reasses the river. When you have been min raised on the turn there is not a hand you are beating apart from a total bluff, FACT.

Min raises on the turn are nearly always pure strength. Yes fold the river aswell.

Pre-flop and flop is indeed fine on the turn as soon as you're reraised it's a fold. any 5 killls you here. there is essentially no hand you're beating and it's time to let go in my humble opinion.

 Pot odds are too great on river to fold.

Turn is scariest card in the deck though and its impossible to spot hi set. He just gets lucky as if he had a set on the flop he would shoved as its too draw heavy to slowplay.
Infact i shut down on the turn and want to play a small pot.

Most likely hand he is calling you with on the flop is 5 x.
