Title: OT my new sig
Post by: Claw75 on February 02, 2007, 01:40:44 PM
I decided a couple of weeks ago that I really needed to change my eating habits.  To be frank, I pretty much ate junk most days, with the odd bit of fruit and veg thrown in.  I'm sure this was in no small part responsible for me having not felt 100% health wise for a pretty long time.  The other downside of course is that I am carrying too much weight, which has got noticably worse in the last couple of months.

So, time to change arrived, and I've been doing pretty well for the last couple of weeks just by eating healthily.  I decided to put something on here to help me keep a more public track of my progress, and am hoping that will help me to achieve my goal, similar to the way the quitting smoking thread seems to have helped people also.  And it's got to be better than the public humiliation of facing Marjorie Dawes types at Fat Fighters once a week :D

I'm aiming for 1-2lbs a week, so with any luck I should be down to my goal weight of 9 stone in 3 months or so.

1. Good luck with your new healthy lifestyles

A bit of lecturing here:

Poppet - don't think of food as diet, as it means you are depriving yourself of something.

Enjoy your meals and stick to 3 a day, providing they are balanced, losing weight or feeling better will be a walk in a park.

Most people put on weight because they snack, and they don't treat those snacks as 'food'.  As long as one eats 3 meals a day following the rule:
big breakfast- medium lunch - small dinner - plenty of fluids - weight loss is easy

The body will adjust fast to 3 meal regime and the need for snacks will diminish.

If you drink alcohol - cut it down - empty calories are the most invisible.

Gl to you ladies.

Claw 1-2lbs a week is definately what you want to aim for gradual loss is superb, i'm a bit of a yoyo person weight wise i went from 16.5 stone to 12 stone and am slowly creeping back up to 15(all since i've been married my wifes a good cook).
I lost all my weight just by eating more healthily and excersing(online poker doesn't encourage this), all very easy and no need to diet.

Don't wanna hijack Claws thread but I'm following the Slimming World diet which is the only way I have found that works for me. Means I can eat as much as I like, just of the right food group. Therefore, I'm not hungry, don't want to snack anyway and I'm eating healthy food. I already feel much better for it. I'd definitely recommend it.

Allen Carr had big beer gut, so I would not trust anyone advising how to lose weight who him/herself is overweight.

good luck claw. not that youll need it as you appear like a well disciplined kind of woman.
Theres a lady that is out running every morning when i go to work. ive seen her for a year. she was about 13 stone (im not good at guessing weight) and now she is very slim, maybe about 9 stone. maybe  you should consider running or other exercise to go with the healthy eating. it will boost the endorphines and you will feel great.

all the best

Probably not, but if one is to advice on diet and healthy eating one at least should look the part.  If his easy way to lose weight is so good why this way was not working for him?

I think Atkins was another one who was huge and was promoting his diet as a way to lose weight.

Dieting is a bussiness - if people would stick to 3 regular meals a day and moderate amount of alcohol- they would not have any problems with their weight.

Stick to 3 meals a day and you lose weight until you get down to certain level, then it will be easy to keep it that way for the rest of your life.
Also you will apprieciate your meals, and will be able to eat whatever you fancy but as the stomach will get used to certain amount, one will begin to fill full up after small amount of food.  Drinking plenty of fluids through out the day will help to keep the bowel movement going.

this is a true easy way to lose and keep the weight down; the only way IMO;

i did my dissertation on diet and weight loss and there are a variety of ways to lose weight. And to be the 3 balanced meals a day diet is not the most effective. I will explain more again but am  off to karate now. aaaayyyyyyaaaarrrrrr!!!!!

Ok,

do me a favour RED-DOG and follow my advice for 2 weeks.

1- week write a diary of everything you are consuming- food and drinks and don't lie - times and what you have eaten
2 nd week - start to have a big breakfast everyday and try to have lunch and dinner and write a diary with 3 regular meals .  compare those two weeks and see if you have eaten less and if you had food cravings throughout the day.

come back here and tell me have you noticed a difference.  don't forget about drinking plenty of water/juices or teas throughout a day

You can eat anything you wish during the 2nd week provided you have a proper breakfast

The only way to lose weight is to eat less - how one will go about is a personal choice, but from what I know - none of my friends lost weight by dieting, restricting their food intake and being obsessed with food.

There are plenty theories on what is healthy and not- the only way to see is to look at slim people who live long-  they usually eat 3 meals a day that are balanced.

Sport- performance diets are different for obvious reasons.

My point is, we all know that the way to stop smoking is to not smoke, the way to lose weight is to eat less.

That being the case, why was the "stop smoking" book so successful?

I can actually lose the weight if I put my mind to it, but it does creep back on.

I was just interested in what the book had to say, especially after reading his autobiography.

LOL - I don't diet - But long time ago I piled up some weight on and after a year or so of trying all sort of diets and calorie counting - I came across a system of food diary.  Eating breakfast everyday has decreased my need to snack and enabled me to regulate my cravings for snacks.

I know it is not easy  to lose weight but one thing for sure - diets do not work long term.

two weeks in today and feeling great.  3.5lb down so on target with the weight loss.  I haven't felt this healthy in years and people have already started commenting on how well I look and that my skin looks more youthful :)  It's not a struggle at all and I don't feel like I'm depriving myself of anything - quite the opposite in fact.  I decided at the start that I would allow myself one 'treat' (i.e. 'bad' food) a week.  This week I was away overnight on Monday on a business trip, and my 'treat' was going to be cooked breakfast in the hotel.  However, when it came to it, I just couldn't face it and had cereal and fruit instead - it's like my body is already rebelling against the junk and saying 'no - keep giving me the good stuff'.

Another strange side effect is that I'm smoking a lot less.  Before I was getting through about 15 a day, and it's down to under 10 now.  That's not something I've done consciously.  I do intend to stop smoking at some point in the near future, but didn't want to tackle the food issue and the smoking at once.   It's given me a lot of confidence that when the time comes to pack in the fags that I will succeed.

Four and a half weeks in and going well.  At last weigh-in (Saturday) I had lost exactly half a stone in 4 weeks, so just about the rate I was hoping for.  It hit me when I got my shopping delivered this week how much I really have made a change for the good.  My weekly shop used to consist of jars of sauces, ready meals and chocolate.  All they had to deliver this week was lots of lovely fruit and veg, fresh meat and fish, and I really can't imagine going back to my old ways now I've got into the habit of preparing and eating good food.

Just got back from a lunchtime shopping trip as my old jeans were literally falling off me, so I've now dropped one dress size as well :)

Maureen, I think that's the key to my success thusfar - there really is no willpower required because everything I'm eating now is just so tasty I don't feel like I'm depriving myself of anything - quite the opposite in fact :)

:)up Claire - good work!

As for diets and the like, the underlying maths is simple:

  • calories in > calories used
    result = weight gain

  • calories in < calories used
    result = weight loss

  • calories in = calories used
    result = weight maintained

(there is slightly more to it than this, such as exercise speeding up your metabolism, certain foods being easier to 'process' than others, etc., but that's the underlying key to success).

As well as the weight side of things, you also have to consider your health as well.  I'm a skinny bugger, but I watch what I eat (although I eat a lot of what I do eat!).  Heart disease is a problem in my Dad's side of the family.  He had a heart attack when he was 40, and a quadruple by-pass when he was 60.  He's never been overweight, used to smoke (but stopped before I was born), doesn't drink, etc.  I make sure that my daily diet is low in saturated fats, I eat enough fruit and veg, oily fish, etc.  I also do a fair bit of exercise (although poker doesn't half get in the way of exercising).  What I'm saying is that everyone should think about what they eat - but if weight loss is your goal the forumla is simple.
