Title: Dont go broke in an unraised pot?
Post by: doubleup on February 05, 2007, 01:24:14 AM
Live £100 freezeout

I have about 5k chips SB has about 10k BB has about 5k - 8 handed.  SB competent quite aggressive,  BB good player

I pick up JJ utg and limp for 400

SB makes up and BB flat calls

Flop J32 - all spades

SB bets 1000, BB calls

Action on me

I'm happy to stick the money in heads-up, but with two opponents on that flop I just call.  Over cautious? If you advocate pushing what do you put both players on?

Like you say, don't go broke in an upraised pot, call to try to fill up but pass if there is a bet on the turn.

Why would you not raise? After all there is no reason to suspect that either have a flush but they could well have a naked spade, why give them a free card to beat you?

Because if he raises here, with 3600 left he is committed to the hand.

I agree, call the 1000 and hope to fill up.

I'm with flushy on this one...no point moving all in or raising here. flat call ..if you fill up you will see them pay you off...if not..then fold to any  decent bet on the turn.

Im shoving here personally, as said we have 4600 back, folding is clearly not an option for mine. I know its a monotone board but we only scared of a flush.

SB range is big and could well include a small flush, the case jack, the naked ace or some kind of pair with a spade, smaller set.

BB's range is smaller but he is unlikely to be slowing playing a small flush given he knows double up is to act behind, so he could well have a good flush maybe the nut flush. Also the naked ace is a possibility or case jack with a good kicker.

I think we are ahead enough here and have enough outs to justify getting it in. Are we folding to a bet on the turn by one of these player when we could still be ahead.

if you flatcall and on the turn the SB bets again and the BB calls you are almost certainly behind. The flatcall is justabout the only way to find out where you are here..(other then the push and getting called by the made flush)

Turn was Kc

SB bets 1k again, BB calls again

I'm about to push as the SB really should bet more if he has the flush, but the good player calling again worries me and getting huge pot odds, I just call again.  Briefly the thought of set over set over set on the flop goes thruogh my mind, but I dismiss it as ridiculously unlikely.

River was a Spade

Everyone instachecks

SB has J3 BB has 33.....

So they were both actually dead.

you must of been playing with thease guys awhile you should have a good idea what hands they have really, blinds 200-400 you have 5k chips pretty short and you limp utg with jacks what are you going to do pre-flop if u get a raise stick it in or call?,

i think you made the mistake pre-flop if u have 9-14k chips u can play the flop and the streets with this hand but with 5k blinds 2-4 you should be raiseing here if you get a call and the flop comes j32 all spades and he bets your pushing, as it is the way you played it your dunking off chips your only move is to flat call the flop now, but if it doesnt fill up and both stay you have to pass to a bet, have 3,6k chips left bb approaching u dont get a hand ur now down to 3k chips

you gave the type of players but what are the range of hands, the sb has 10k chips u must of seen him play a few hands how does he play hands like this?

just my view... stu

glad it worked out for you, but it could of been worse anyone bets on the end they take it, sb/bb didnt make the money at a guess?

I think that the hand can be played either way - I'm very close to push or fold but not quite there yet. I didn't like raising mainly because the table was fairly tight and a reraise would put me in a tough spot.  So the likely outcome would be that I would just take the blinds, so I'd rather play it in a riskier fashion in the hope of picking up chips.

The SB wld def have played a baby flush the same way on the flop - but also a hand like As3x - so if it had been hu I would happilly have pushed.  My real worry was the BB - it did cross my mind that he might have a smaller set, but then what has the SB got, if 2/3 of the flop is taken?

Push on flop, your stacks too small for finesse plays. Im with the guy who said why do you limp preflop at those blinds- i used to play JJ in EP like that but live its a raise all day long at 200/400 with 5k.
Only hand ur legitiamtely scared of from the caller is Axs as he would raise with a made flush. Even if the guy betting has the nuts, you just shove and house up.

i understand you problem of the bb, his flat call is dangerous but if u work it down he could of a set, bare A/K draw 2 pair all simlar all hands you would flat call with in that spot a made baby flush he has to raise to chase the bare A/K off the hand,

the S/B could bet with a baby flush here but his small bet on the turn tells you he hasnt got this because he would of bet big to chase the bare A/K away

as i said im happy it worked out for you but i stick with my guns pre-flop is what put u in this spot, the turn is where the pot should of been ended with you passing if the trip 33's plays correct but we all get the rub of the green sometimes,

Yes - I should've moved in on the turn and almost did, but the pot odds led me astray.

Arrghhhh i was being sarcastic and people actually agreed with me!

This is an insta push, there is rarely an easier push. I'm not sure who played this hand worse though, all of you flop big hands and it plays out so passive!
