Title: <Pause> Mmmm .... <Pause> ... I just don't believe you. <ALL IN>
Post by: pswnio on February 07, 2007, 08:43:56 AM
I've now tried this ploy four times after making my straight, flush or full house on the river. Type "I don't believe you" into the chatbox when you know you've got them beat and people seem to fall for it every time. Four times on the spin now I've got all their chips into the middle. Lovely. Are there any other classic chatbox tactics people use?

If they are thinking about it... "No shame in folding".

Can't get their chips in quick enough.

End of large MTT, heads up. I have 400,000 chips, as does he. I hold  Jd 8s

Flop is  6d 7d 8d 9d Td

He checks. I type 'lol' in chatbox, push all-in. He calls. Much swearing ensues.

I like that.  In a cash game you can say "one for the house" as you push all-in...

fail to see what difference the "lol" makes in this instance - your opponent calls here even if you say nothing, would you pass if your opponent made the same move on you when you don't hold the  Jd?

I must admit this is one of the few proper tells you get in online poker, in my experience just about any speech play is from players trying to induce a call when they are sitting on a monster. It is scary how often i see the nuts shown by the speech players in these situations.

Note to self: Use speech play to try and induce a call when trying to bluff Longy out of a pot............

In the live cash game I play, 'one for the house' would lead to the pot being split if he called.
If he's going to call whatever, then 'lol' makes no difference. But a lot of players imo have a very strong 'policing' voice, and if you tempt them...it's a kind of a game of chicken: 'lol' means 'we both have this, do you have the balls to call, I have the balls to go all in. The pot here was next to nothing, and the call is superidiotic. At very best you stand to win just a few chips from the split pot. And what behaviour should you expect from a Jd holder? Something like 'lolling' in the chatbox, maybe.

In this instance to me "lol" means "look at that there's a straight flush on board, what are the odds" but then i never take any notice of what people type in the chat box to try and influence my decision, nor do i ever type anything in to try and influence my opponents decision. (on occasions i have used the ability to call "time" during a hand to confuse my opponent and keep them guessing).

So if you were playing the heads up game and the straight flush was on board and your opponent went all in first are you saying you would pass?

Depends on my opponent, depends on the pot size, and my stack relative to his. Here he is calling me, a tightish player, for his whole stack, equal to mine, for a pot of next to nothing. For me, instant pass.
Probably about 80 percent of the time I'm seeking to take chips off one opponent when he has a good hand and I have a better hand, random gambles like this one don't interest me, neither really do coin flips.
Some people just have 'aggression aggression' floating around their heads, seek every opportunity to steal, as much for the satisfaction as the chip value. Maybe in a decent pot I consider calling this board, normally, no way. Would you call it?
