Title: Car drivers Post by: TheWhisper on February 07, 2007, 04:42:12 PM If you drive a car, Read this.
Sarah Kennedy was on about this proposed car tax scheme on the radio apparently there is only one month left to register your objection to the 'Pay as you go' road tax. The petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tell anybody about it. Therefore at the time of Sarah's comments only 250,000 people had signed it so far and 750,000 signatures are required to stop them introducing it. This is legit... from the 10 Downing Street's website. Once you've given your details (you don't have to give your full address, just house number and postcode will do), they will send you an email with a link in it. Once you click on that link, you'll have signed the petition. Democracy in action? The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month. On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill. If you care about our freedom and stopping the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website (link below) and pass this on to as many people as possible. http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/ (http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/) Sign up if you are in agreement with the petition - if not just forget it. Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: matt674 on February 07, 2007, 04:54:36 PM Lol, i've received this exact same email about 15 times now - if they don't f**k us this way they will think of many others (like the proposed plan to introduce a congestion corridor charge in Manchester).

Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: ifm on February 07, 2007, 10:09:55 PM The transport minister (dunno his name) recently discounted this petition saying something along the lines of "it will have no bearing on the decision".
That's democracy for ya! Title: CAR TAX - drive & pay Post by: TEX FITZ on February 08, 2007, 12:20:14 AM Hi, hope this post and link OK with mods
This is NOT garbage. Radio 2 talked about the proposed Road Pricing car tax scheme on the radio. Apparently there is only one month left to register your objection to the 'Pay as you go' road tax. But i figured a way round it - leave the tracker at home hitched up to a 12v battery (take it to pub twice a week) Title: Re: CAR TAX - drive & pay Post by: TEX FITZ on February 08, 2007, 12:31:07 AM sorry, didnt spot earlier post
Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: wader leg on February 08, 2007, 12:36:41 AM Regardless of the issue, do you think 750,000 online petitoners should have the power to change Government policy?
Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: Bongo on February 08, 2007, 12:38:56 AM 750,000 signatures of an online petition during the beta testing of a new website? Never.

Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: thetank on February 08, 2007, 03:34:17 AM Regardless of the issue, do you think 750,000 online petitoners should have the power to change Government policy? Good question. Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: tikay on February 08, 2007, 10:24:07 AM 750,000 signatures of an online petition during the beta testing of a new website? Never. Bongo, at least, spots the scam. It's hard to imagine folks believe these things. The same story emerged a few months back, closely followed by another on the same "Government Website" - "should fat people be taxed at a higher rate?". Folks fell for that, too! Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: AndrewT on February 08, 2007, 10:29:43 AM Regardless of the issue, do you think 750,000 online petitoners should have the power to change Government policy? They don't. There's no magic number when the Government thinks 'oooh, we've got 750,000 people saying to end road tax, ban Mondays or send all the Muslims back where they came from, that means we've got to do it'. You get one chance to influence Government policy, by making one little X every five years - that's it. Any government which made a pledge to do whatever the public wanted would be in a lot of trouble. Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: TheWhisper on February 08, 2007, 12:37:03 PM This is not a scam website, it is the real deal.
You can follow the link to it from The Number 10 website. While it is true that they might not listen they would be foolish to ignore such large numbers. One Mrs Thatcher thought she could ignore the public with her Poll Tax and we all know the outcome (well those over a certain age) Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: Bongo on February 08, 2007, 12:46:08 PM But how many actual individuals have signed up?
Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: boldie on February 08, 2007, 01:03:30 PM I think it's quite funny.
driving a car since Labour came to power has actually gotten cheaper (9% in Real terms. source Newsnight and nobody (even automobilie lobbyists) dispute this) so i don't know why car drivers complain soo much. Also the "On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times." yes..because satnav does no such thing. Who do you think invented GPS? (American military for those who don't know) They can already know where you are at all time simply by tracking either your satnav or your phone...so the whole "Big brother is watching you" argument also falls rather flat. Motorists are a funny bunch. Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: Bongo on February 08, 2007, 01:09:19 PM I don't think GPS isn't accurate enough for road charging, hence the need for a new system.
Sat Navs pick up the signal from the satellites and the unit uses a form of triangulation to figure out where it is, they don't transmit back to space to be tracked... Also who knows who owns which sat nav unit? Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: TheWhisper on February 08, 2007, 01:11:05 PM Buying cars might be cheaper in real terms but driving them certainly isn't.
I would happily get rid of my car but I do not have any alternative. Title: Re: Car drivers Post by: Trace on February 08, 2007, 02:55:23 PM Whilst we are on the subject of petitions and cars - here's another you may be interested in:

Most major roads are covered by cameras anyway! |
