Title: Who did you pretend to be?
Post by: The Camel on February 14, 2007, 01:39:29 PM
Fun topic on the QPR messageboard I go to...

When you were a kid, playing football in the park or the playground, who did you pretend to be in that little commentary in your head?

Me, it was usually Peter Barnes. A flying and tricky winger for West Brom and Man City.

Then, after I had been to Loftus Road for the first time I was always Sir Stanley Bowles!

Abe Lenstra...He used to play for Heerenveen and turned down a massive offer to join Juventus. By the people that watched him play (pre-Cruijf and Van Hanegem) regarded as the best player Holland ever had..

Pele :D

When in primary school (back in'th days when i could still run) i was only 7 years old when picked to play for the primary school team even though the rest of the team was made up with 10 and 11 year olds. They let me join in during the games in the playground as well when we used to kick a tennis ball round the playground which was unheard of really as they usually never anyone 3 years below them to join in their game. During one of the games in the playground i had the ball at my feet but was facing the wall of the canteen with one of the older lads stood at my back trying to tackle me.

I flicked the ball up with one foot and kicked it against the canteen wall so that it went over both our heads and spun round behind him to get the ball at the other side, then nutmegged (sp?) someone else who had also come to tackle me - it was then that the first tackler (who i remember was a lad everyone called Jonah - though i dont think that was his nameĀ  :dontask:) piped up "he's like a mini version of Pele".

It kinda stuck so all the other kids called me mini-Pele :D

Dalglish or Sammy Lee.  I was dead small when I was young, and loved little Sammy and how good he was even though he was only several inches tall.  King Kenny, well - he was King Kenny.

We didn't used to 'bagsie' players, we used to go for teams.  I always went for Liverpool at the time as they were winning everything.

hmmm, since i'm only in my early 20s I don't think i picked such legends as Pele and the like.

I do remember "being" Shearer when he was at Blackburn.

More recently playing with my younger brother in the back garden I've been Claudio Cannigia and Julian Speroni.  Both Dundee legends!

Ray Clemence (I was a good goalie). Strangely as I hit my teens I began to appreciate Shilts and when I hit adulthood I couldn't understand how Clemence ever got alternate caps with Shilts. When I was 9 though, it was Clemence

Andy Ripley (I was in the Colts side of the side he played senior rugby for), Andy was a very swift long haired number 8 for England in the mid 70s

James Hunt

Ian Botham, the early version

and, paroachially, any of the following...Frank Worthington, Keith Weller, Len Glover, Mark Wallington and Steve Lynex.

Like The Camel, I believed I had the skills of the genius Stan Bowles, but as a right footed left full back I probably had more in common with Ian Gillard or Dave Clement  :)

Started off as Grobelaar, as i used to be a keeper. Then i didn't grow and became a striker so had to become michael owen.

Rugby wise I was Neil Back as he was a short arse flanker with a big head too.

First player I can remember being was Charlie George. Used to celebrate goals like the double winner vs Liverpool (1971?).

Later on Peter Shilton as I gravitated to being keeper as it involved less running around and being hacked ( our school was rough).

Good thread

Davie Provan and Charlie Nicholas.

Provan used to wear his socks round his ankles and was a great winger. Charlie Nick was a goalscoring genius with Celtic first time round but went to the bright lights of London and boring boring Arsenal when he really should have gone to Liverpool.

nearly always Seve Ballestreros but never ever under any circumstances Nick Faldo even though I'm from the same county (hertfordshire) as he was go figure.

my favourite Seve story....
a pal of mine got on the tour around 1990 and was playing in the Italian open and was on the practice range with about 30 other pro's sometime on Tuesday before the tourney started and Seve came to the 18th hole which ran behind where the guys were hitting and every single one of them turned watched seve tee off hit his second shot and putt out before returning to their work. that to me was the ultimate show of respect and the regard to which Seve was held by his competitors at the time probably hasn't been equalled by any European player (tiger certainly but no euro).

for football Liam Brady until Arsenal sold him and i switched allegiances i was only about six! then Hoddle and Mabbut

LOL at Charlie Nicholas good at football and all  but the arsenal players used to have honarary membership of the golf club i played at and charlie turned up one day to play wearing leather trousers and sporting a Shocking pink golf bag he may have got some stick that day!

games in the playground when we used to kick a tennis ball round

The memories of spending ever break playing football with a tennis ball, 30 players per team.

Kevin Keegan for me. It was even more special when I leant that his birthday was on the same day as mine. Things like that seem to matter when your a kid.

Was always Stuart Pearce.

Whenever we did a strong tackle or shot we shouted "PEARCE" thinking we was Motson or something like that.

Legend.

Oh...and we always used to pull our shorts up as high as we could for added effect.....it was the early 90's
