Title: Team Poker Tournament Any Ideas?
Post by: Bubble on February 14, 2007, 07:59:25 PM
I am looking to setup a team poker tournament. I have seen a couple of formats, but don’t know which one is the best one to use.

only 3 formats that i appove of

1 heads up matches
2 serveral comps all played at same time with 1 person per team in each comp points given due to placing
3 one comp with serveral players in each team 1 person per team allowed to play at any one time with subs being made when captain choices

any other form of team poker can lead to cheating

Have you played any team event, which one do you think works the best?

i played in a HU comp but that doesnt mean to say i think its best

i think all 3 have there merits but the problem lies in if people still left in the comp have nothing to play for they could be open to deal making for this reason all comps must start at same time and no offical scoring to be announced untill the games are all over

Nice one,  Did'nt think of that.  How about the single table format?  any issues you think I should be aware of?

single table can still be open for deal making unless they are all played at same time

ie player A needs to finish last but 1 to ensure they win they offer player b whose team is alreay out x% of the prize pool if he throws the event there are plent of other things along these lines that could lead to cheating so all events should be held at same time and players still playing shouldnt know the results of other games

How about a single table and team members take it in turns to play,  will that work?

Im worried that with only one player at the table the game will be slow and r=the waiting players will get bored.  Have you played the single table table format. If so, how did it go?

Depends how many team you have, but with ten or less STTs work well.

IE you have 9 teams of four players you play four STTs with one member from each team in each one (Drawn at random). Players score points depending on where they finish (1pt for 9th, 2pt for 8th ... 9pt for 1st)
At the end the team with the most points wins. You can even play a couple of rounds if you have the time.

Sound good, but ironside said that this leaves to toourney open to deal making. I cant get my head around how to play it with more than 10 teams.

HU torny if 10 or more i think,

Or

You could use the tag format with say 18 teams and have 2 tables, this might take an age + lead to boredom though.

How about starting with a MTT  system and condense it down ending up with a single final table??

How about starting with a MTT  system and condense it down ending up with a single final table??

because it can lead 2 more than 1 player from same team on any table leading to chip dumping which there is more than enough of without teaching people how to do it

There must be away without worring about chip dumping, deals and out right cheating... How would you run a team event?

You have to give more points for knocking players from your own team out, makes it interesting

as i said before i have only played in 1 event and it was a hu event and is possible the best format for team events

no form of MTT where members of the same team are playing and can end up on same table is a runner in my view

you can have multi MTTs where 1 member of the team team plays in each MTT and points awarded but this would mean the players not knowing the results of other events untill they were out

single tables IMHO would work if less than 10 teams but again to make sure there is no cheating and deal making soft play players should not know the results of other tables

teams of players playing in one event with team members replacing each other at various stages is a workable format but isnt a format that suits pot or no limit games due to the fact that players can go out first hand and then some team members feeling riipped off due to never having played
maybe teams of 3 with a triple chance system would work where in once a player loses all the chips in front of him the team can get a free rebuy (like in a double chance freezeout) the player who loses the chips cannot be subbed back in untill after all teams have taken there top ups (maybe a 3 hour period this will allow all players a chance to play for a period of time or untill they lost there chips)

Poker is not a Team game, in my opinion, & does not lend itself to Team Play format.

It doesn't mean you can't have a team......

Take tennis, you don't have teams (forgetting doubles for the moment) but you can still have comps like the Daviis Cup. Poker can quite easily do the same thing with HU matches.

I don't think poker generally lends itself well to team events. However, I've played in a HU team event which was very successfully run and great fun.

Here's a controversial idea for single or multi tables: Allow collusion. If you are going to have a team event then why not allow them to play as a team. I think there would fabulous scope tactically and then no one could be accused of cheating. Otherwise it might as well just be an individual event.

Like ironside said, 1 team captain selects a player to play, and can substitute him for another member of the team at anytime.

There were certain rules that the world cup teams had to comply with, i dont remember exactly but it was things like ''at least 1 change to be made during the first 2 blind levels'' etc.

we played one at the betfair do and it worked well
8 teams of 8 players playing on 8 tables  as an stt - all tables started at the same time and used same clock , each team had a capt and joker , players got points for where they finished on the table plus bonus points for ko a team captain and also the joker - the jokers points also counted double for his own team
we played £25 a man every table winner got £100 and the winning team received £800 total
the emphasis on the event was general fun and a bit of rivalry/ bragging rights- there was no dumping as each table had 1 player from each team on it  - every table also had a team capt and a team joker on it
as i said it worked fine
