Post by: Sunday8pm on February 19, 2007, 01:22:21 PM
Anybody else playing this?

The Main event is $5k buy in and $1 million gtd prizepool, but my sources say it wont reach 200 players so there is sure to be some value.

Starts tuesday i believe

Day 1 - Arrival

After the help of a few drinks and a couple of sleeping pills i managed to get my head down and sleep for most of the 8.5 hour flight. Standard of the flight was pretty poor, flying cattle class with Thomson is not advisable i assure you!

We arrive at the airport and already I'm gobsmacked at how different everything is, the heat, the people, the general way of life. After getting through immigration i was stopped by an excited looking security guard. He asked me to buy 4 bottles of Sheridans liqour for him from the duty free. I was somewhat confused but agreed sceptically to it anyway! Pass through customs and you have never seen anything like it. Taxi drivers begging you for your business. If only these guys could give me a taxi at 3am every bloody Saturday night outside my local nightclub, they would make a killing! All the poker players were going on a coach to the hotel, which is 1.5 hours from the airport, All of us decided in order to escape the rush at the hotel then we would jump in the taxis. 1.5 hour taxi - £6!!!

The drive to there was something which i will remember forever, driving through shanty towns with seemingly endless poverty, Cows wandering in the middle of the road, A tractor driver driving the wrong way up the motorway. It was pretty crazy!

Get to hotel, Check into rooms, which are amazing by the way. We all have our own room and they are the size of a flat with a nice sized balcony looking over the golf course, which i will probably have a crack at sometime during the holiday as long as its not with Marc Goodwin lol! Sorry Marc couldn't resist ;-)

Load of us meet for dinner and Dubai keeps his style by announcing that he isnt eating at the free 'peasant' BBQ on the beach for poker players and we end up in an a' la carte. The food was pretty cheap, not the greatest, but certainly worth the money (Around £10 per meal). I managed to sneak away and join up with Barny and Ross Boatman in the bar for a beer and watching these gorgeous Thai singers, watch this space ;). Also, on that note, the air hostesses have checked into the same hotel and are staying a few rooms away from me, Bonus!

The night ends with Nick Slade organising a killer tournament on the snooker table in the bar, i busted out about midway,it was won by Mr Cool who is so golden its untrue! I then played Nick for £100 in a standard game of snooker and brushed past him with ease lol ;-)

Dubai obviously couldn't resist ram raiding the champagne fridge and we sunk 2 bottles of Dom before heading up to our rooms about 2am. The main event starts tomorrow and im looking forward to it. Im due a win, but then again i guess everybody is due their 'big break'. I fancy my chances though.

Be Lucky,

Ben

1.5 hour taxi - £6!!!

If you tip some cabbies they will be outside your hotel the next day waiting for you! It's crazy.

If you get any spare time check out the beaches at Palolem. Simply amazing at this time of year.

Great report.

Good luck in the tourney Ben.

Goa's a fascinating place, quite unlike the rest of India I've been told. Having only visited Goa I can confer the crazy driving. My girlfriend and I were nearly killed many times swerving cows on those roads! We had the same taxi driver for the whole 2 weeks we were there - he'd drive us all over the State waiting patiently outside wherever we went. Like having a chauffeur but costing £15 a day. The Goan fish curries are great and if you can get to Palolem beach as Woodsey suggests it's well worth it. Give the Feni a miss though - it's rancid.

The shanty town poverty you see next to the huge mansions and 5* hotels can be quite depressing. It would have been even more difficult to deal with if I was a poker player back then. I guess as we're in the fortunate position to be risking a years wages to some of these people on the turn of a card it's good Karma to give a bit back. I'm sure a generous tip to the needy would go a long way. Even with a chunky tip everythings so cheap out there it's still a tenth of the price over here. Hope it goes well for you, oh and look out for the wild monkeys - they'll steal food out of your hands! Looking forward to the next entry...

Rang up Marc Goodwin today, was not foreign ring tone so happy I was not waking him up due to him being in some strange time zone. Chatting away we were, then he announces he's in Goa. My mobile bill is going to thud on the doormat in a very heavy fashion this month. I'll reverse the charges next time!

Day 2 and 3

I am a muppet. Sorry for not posting yesterday but i was literally dead in bed. I spent 8 hours in the Sun on Wednesday with a minimal amount of suncream. As a result of this i now have a blistered body, worst parts being my chin and back. Oh well we live and learn.

The resort is really nice, good golf course (for a 9 hole), good restaurants, good leisure facilities etc etc.

Wednesday -

Well this is where it started to go wrong, im used to going pretty brown, but now i realise that you just dont go brown in 38C heat, you burn! Most of the day was spent by the pool, and a little bit swimming in the sea and lying on the beach. I did manage to earn a bit of money aswell.....By eating a sandy pineapple and a whole watermelon without using my hands. I am a muppet! Needless to say i spent a bit of time on the pan that night. I srated to realise i was burnt when everyone went for dinner and i didnt feel good so went to bed and got up at 11pm. I found the lads drinking some fancy plonk still in the restaurant so i had a water and we headed off to this 'secret' poker room as poker seems quite taboo in India. We ended up playing a couple of £100 sit and goes which Thewy cleaned up in if i remember rightly. Julian is the only poker player i know who can bet 150 into a 1000 chip pot on the turn heads up and make the other guy pass. Its so irritating! We ended up getting to bed around 5am and it took me a while to get to sleep as the pain was getting worse.

Thursday -

Got to be one of the worst days of my life. I woke up around 4pm. I kept having nightmares during the night and was really struggling to sleep, i was freezing cold but my bed was soaked with sweat. I was hallucinating in my room and it was pretty horrid. I pulled myself together and got some aloe vera from Keston and Joey and caked myself in it, unfortunatly it didn't make me normal again! All the poker players i have met so far out here have been awesome, all of them asking if im ok and genuinly being concerned which is quite uplifting. I just could hardly stand up so ended up going back to bed around 730pm and got up this morning at 8am (Goa is 5 hours ahead of UK). The Main Event is in 1 hour so i best go and make myself attractive and start thinking how to play poker. I was planning on playing a bit online here but to be honest the internet is so dodgy, still it doesn't stop Dubai and Grundy playing the biggest stakes online! Sickos

Peace and Love,

Ben

well i kinda donked out in level 8 re-re-re-pushing aj into ak...idiot.
most of the others went out to some very bad beats;
sunday flopped a set of 5s on a 5,10d,Jd flop & pushed in on a big overbet - QQ called & hit runner runner K,A.
joey lovelady got it all in with ak v aq v aj...j on river,
barney flopped set of 2's on i think an A,2,4 flop got it all-in against cretinous chip leader after raise, re-raise type multi-way action, who called w A5, rivered 3.
ross just unlucky running big hand into bigger hand,
ash hussian ran 99 in QQ...QQ filled up,
kier fitzgibbon(?) managed to pass QQ on 8 high flop, nick slade didn't pass 99 & ran into AA.
rob sherwood went out in the last level,
smokie got 66 all-in v Q9, flop 6,4,4,Q,4 or something like that, bad girl lost w JJ i think,
rolf slotboom going well, but might be prone to tilt the lot off after someone purloined his box of tic tacs off the top of his stack, titter, titter
jpk is till in with 24k & 36 left, not sure if marc goodwin & surinder made it.
praise the lord there's a $500 today & a $1000 tomorrow so wages might yet get banked

Hi guys, JPK (Jonathan) here posting on kinghawko's account (he's still logged in on my lappie and I don't have a Blonde account)

Made the FT, down to 8, guaranteed $30k with a 160k stack, leader has 270k. Final televised tomorrow live, I'm not sure where, but it should be fun.

Just thought I'd post a quick update, I'm having a double Bailey's now to send me to sleep (I'm 24 FFS) to get some much needed rest for tomorrow, those TV cameras are stiffling ;)

Best

TY guys and shame on YOU whoever was asking who I am???????

Won $55k-ish.. I dropped a $3k tip on the TK crew due to Steve's amazing tolerance to my tantrums and expletive outbursts throughout the tournament, I'm sure you'll all be disgusted with my behaviour when you get to see it, but oh well.

Ed's posted a link to my blog above if you wanna check it out, and yes, I was the one trying to scoop up 1%'s in Walsall out of boredom, but it's actually cost me, as I gave 1% back to someone I didn't pay and now I have to give him $550 LOL

Be Lucky,

Ben
