i am in the need for a set of head phones but looking for a decent set that are comfortable and will allow me to block out noise without turning them up too high

anyone know of any?

These are the ones I use - they sit very snugly in my ear so they're great at blocking out sound. Perfect for the tube.

Same style as AndrewT suggests but not as pricey, in ear, ear plug design. They are the best type of in ear around ATM. If you want larger headphones for your PC then I'd go for some 5.1 surround ones.

The best headphones I ever used were Bose noise reduction ones. I dont know if they are on sale in the UK or not but would definetely recommend them, used them on a transaltantic flight and could quite comfortably watch a DVD on my laptop without any background noise whatsoever.

they say 68% of other noise cancelled not sure on the standard but it doesnt seem that great

yeh thats where you are going to struggle. They are considered the best in the world but are so expensive. As such most high street stores eg dixons, currys etc dont stock them as not a lot of people wanna spend 100+ on headphones. Looks like its mainly online that people buy, but if you could afford to wait a week then im sure you would get them by then and im positive they will be worth the wait! But if not i guess sony must do a decent set in dixons or the likes!

dont want to start a big debate here (ok maybe I do ;) ) but for my money Bose is just overhyped rubbish.

As someone who dabbles is real hifi, the money spent on bose "lifestyle" products could be much more wisely spent on other manufacturers kit. ask yourself this, why wont Bose sell thru normal retail channels, where their products can be compared side by side with other kit ?

the shure e2c are nice, if your budget can stretch, the e4c are far superior.

Sennheiser have always been the headphones to buy as far as I'm concerned.

I have a sick Sennheiser headset, probably a bit too much for what you need but the noise reduction is insane.

Have got to aggree with the above posts, Sennheiser are great headphones.

Yes, they're ok if you have a big head! Most of those style headphones don't reduce down in size enough, so if they don't fit properly they end up useless. Give me a decent set of in-ear ones every time.

yeh i was watching some gadget show not long ago and they recommended in ear ones. There was a awesome set around 250 quid that they said worked better then on ear ones!
