Title: Student Highrollers
Post by: AdamM on March 01, 2007, 01:49:38 PM
As I said in another thread, I've been on a 6 month break from live poker. when I last played at Nottingham there were a few new faces that were obviously University students. they were playing the £10 / £20 limited buy in games and the £30 rebuy.

I come back six months later and they're are making up half the numbers at a cash game in matching hoodies, sunglasses and huge headphones pulling up between £500 and £1000 each and reloading the same.

you can't tell me they are all playing off huge bankrolls earned at the tables. some student overdrafts / loans taking a hammering I think.

I know/knew several guys like that in scotland..you see most of them for a few weeks/months and then all of a sudden most of them are never heard of again. Fantastic.

Are you referring to the Gala casino in Nottingham Adam? It is quite funny the numbers there are and the money some of them seem to have, particularly two of the guys I have seen with thousands and one of them is most definitely at the university. One of them I spoke to apparently plays £10/£20 online. I myself play there and am a student but I don't often stretch past the £30 freezeout and I don't wear a hoodie, I do like the headphones tho....:P. You should not hear a student going "if I dont qualify for the Gala Poker Tour i'll just buy in".

Makes you wonder what happens to the poor(literally) percentage who do dump their loans on it. Something I nearly managed to do after my first year of playing. Glad I had the sense to give myself a reality check and understand BR management. Going well now :).

I thik every player should wear a chesercutter cap, or trilby, & wear woollen driving gloves. I could start a trend.

I've sent a note to the wardrobe mistress at The Open and she is going to get Tikay a hoodie. I think it'll improve his appearance no end. Anyway, Tikay, I wear hoodies and I'm an old (censored)  just like you.

I play the cash game regularly at the Notts Gala - it's quite interesting how when I started there about a year and half ago the max people would sit down with was about £50 - £100 on the £1-£2 NL. I always sat covering the biggest stack and now often sit down with £1k. I like the fact the game has got so big because there are lots of players that don't know how to play really deep stack cash :)

We've started a £2 - £4 game too which can see over £15k on the table at times. Happy days.

And yes, I'd like to see Tikay in a Hoodie. It would be classic.

I love wearing a hoodie at the table!

Makes me feel comfortable and whenever it gets shorthanded I put the hood up. It totally blocks out all distractions going on around the table and I am totally absorbed in the game. (not to say I dont always pay attention but with the hoodie on, it goes up a notch)

As someone who was one the guys in yellow hoodies and big earphones we were just taking the piss out of Pete Linton, a regular at the casino and the cash games we play.

It might be suprising but Gala Nottingham has become a gold mine for players like myself and there are some terrible players that are willing to blow hundreds and alot of gamblers that are good value.

As for our bankrolls, we are at uni but were far from regular students.  A couple of our "team" have had some decent tournament wins that are the basis of our rolls. (Not 20/30 rebuys, more like 1000 freezeouts).
