Title: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: TightEnd on March 15, 2007, 11:13:33 PM discuss the following
"football fans find penalty shootouts exciting" Lord Mawhinney Football League Chairman "football fans do not like draws" same person I don't know about you, but I reckon of the football league adopts this you'll see a lot of inferior sides pack the defence with 11 behind the ball for long periods and hope to win the lottery of a shootout after 90 minutes Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: kinboshi on March 15, 2007, 11:35:23 PM Someone was discussing this on the radio today, and came up with the idea that after a certain time has elapsed (say 80 minutes - it could be 90 minutes plus 10, but whatever), both sides get a point each if they are level at that time. They then play the last 10 minutes for an additional point. If they draw that, they both get nothing extra (just the 1 point each from the normal time 'draw') - but if one of them gets the winner in the additional time, then they get 2 points total from the game, and the other takes 1 point. If you lose in the 80 minutes, you get nothing, and you get 3 points for winning in the 80 minutes.
I'm sure I could have explained that a lot better. . I thought this was an interesting idea, and makes more sense than penalties. In the J-League in Japan they don't have draws. All games have penalties if they end in a draw. Not that the football there is worth watching though. Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! These people dont have the power to sort out the real problems in football (cheating etc.), so they come up with this gormless idea. Even if they vote it through, do they have the power to enforce it? Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: Longy on March 16, 2007, 02:35:54 AM What a load of rubbish.
I have to say im a traditionalist football fan but this is ludicrous, they tried it in Japan it didn't work. English football is watched worldwide more than any other sport, why the hell would you want to change it. Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: Royal Flush on March 16, 2007, 06:04:54 AM No deals.....
Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: Graham C on March 16, 2007, 09:35:33 AM What a stupid suggestion. Out of all the problems we have in football, they tackle draws. What about implementing goalline technology?
Ridiculous idea. Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: Acidmouse on March 16, 2007, 09:38:29 AM So now you don't play for a draw you play for a penalty shootout!
Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: Rod Paradise on March 16, 2007, 09:41:15 AM Daft idea - if they want to eliminate draws & encourage attacking football, have the shootout before the game, the teams then know what they need to do.....
More sensibly, leave the game the fuck alone. Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: Steelio on March 16, 2007, 10:31:15 AM Id rather have a draw, they better not change it
Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: boldie on March 16, 2007, 10:59:03 AM I liked one of the comments on skysports yesterday from one of the coaches. "What? Is some American buying up the premiership?"
what a stupid idea. If anyone thinks draws are boring I refer to the Chelsea-Spurs FA cup game. Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: AndrewT on March 16, 2007, 11:03:32 AM Getting rid of draws is a stupid idea.
It would have ruined Escape to Victory. Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: The Baron on March 16, 2007, 02:29:12 PM Firstly I can see why they want to do this. 'Soccer' will never make it in the US whilst there are draws. No other US game ends in a tie (or vary rarely does).
Coppell was mentioning 4 pts for a win, 2 for a win on penalties and 1 for a loss on penalties. It needs to be tested in one of the lower leagues before being brought into a league that works fine as is. Finally, the EPLclubs wont allow it. The whole point of the formation of the Premiership was so that the clubs could dictate their owns fates regarding TV money, fixture times etc. If the league enforces this the EPL will just say "We're no longer associated with the rest of English league football" and do their own thing. Shouldn't happen, wont happen. Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: Bazzaboy on March 16, 2007, 05:10:42 PM Shouldn't happen, wont happen. Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: Ironside on March 17, 2007, 04:15:42 AM id rather than took away the offside rule,
1 the officals often get it wrong more that once a game IMHO 2 it would open the game up as players are spread more thinly over the pitch leaving more spaces for players to run into 3 women would be able to understand the game ironside Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: thetank on March 17, 2007, 04:58:59 AM How come this never gets suggested for the Bundesliga?
Title: Re: Its a draw...time for penalties!?! Post by: Rod Paradise on March 17, 2007, 10:51:07 AM How come this never gets suggested for the Bundesliga? It's best to experiment with the minor leagues first ;D |
