Great coach, great man, thoughts go out to him and his family.

On TMS just now Jonathan Agnew has announced Woolmer's death - a sad end to someone who was a great coach to go out at such a low point.

Puts the fuss about Flintoff's Pedalogate into perspective.

Wow what terrible news, he was a great coach and a sad loss to the entire cricket world.

The timing is even worse and for him to go out in these circumstances is even worse. My thoughts are with his family.

As a youngster remember watching him play for England at Old Trafford in test matches, he was a true Professional and to me an inspiration, he worked so hard on his game to become a great player, sadly missed.

I was wondering this the other day actually, but didn't feel it was right to say anything.

I read that last night on the bbc site, it was barely a footnote at the bottom of the article and came with the proviso that all sudden deaths that can't be explained were treated as suspicious until they could prove otherwise.

There are many puzzling key questions including: was it true the team had a major argument soon after returning from its loss to Ireland?

Who or what was responsible for the marks on Woolmer's throat? Why was the vomit in his room splashed in usually high places on the wall? Why was there blood on the floor?

Why was there no sign of a break-in in Woolmer's room if there was an intruder? Did he know the person?

 :(

Caught the news earlier and they were speculating that he was about to blow the whistle on a match fixing scandal and that is why he was killed.

Without being sensational that would seem to be a very likely scenario, the Pakistani team have been up to no good for years( there are pretty strong rumours in the gambling world that the West Indies v Pakistan match in this WC could be dodgy) and I guess this guy could have been about to blow the whistle.

In a quirk Woolmer was also the team manager of the South Africa team that Cronje captained when some of those players were found guilty so who knows what has gone on.

Absolutely shocking.

Poor guy and his poor family.

This is all very strange.

Everyone has known that Pakistani cricket has been bent for a while (their defeat to Kenya in a previous World Cup is a case in point). If, as bobby1 says, there was a big coup planned on the Pak v WI Super 8 game, then losing against Ireland and getting knocked out of the competition would have put an end to it.

Security around the hotels the players are staying in is absolutely rock solid - all the players have said so. This means that whoever did it must be close to the Pakistani team. Known to them, so as not to arouse suspicion.

lets just hope that when they find out who did it the ICC have the balls to ban the team for the next 20 years from playing cricket taking the life off a good man just because he is going to blow the whistle on them for cheating and i hope they still have the death penalty for the cowards

I think we need to wait for more facts before we start jumping to conclusions and calling for bans.
On the radio today it said Bob hadn't mentioned anything about match fixing to his wife.
Im not prepared to speculate on who may have done it,but it is possible it could have been a crazed fan.

You are most certainly right, we are just surmising really as it seems like something out of a film than a sporting event.

I have onl caught with this after seeing it on the msn home page.

Again it is speculative but i must agree that matching fixing is a plausible reason for the murder. It is huge in cricket and some very powerful people would want him to keep quiet about it, at any cost!!!!

Post by: Pelham Boy on March 24, 2007, 11:33:37 AM
Maybe im being naive but i would be very surprised if it was match fixing.
All the matches that were suspected to be corrupt in the past have been 'dead' games.
You have to remember that in Asia the World Cup is THE big thing, where we have The Ashes and generally place greater importance on Test matches.

Title: Re: Woolmer rushed to hospital
Post by: Woodsey on March 24, 2007, 12:43:20 PM
Woolmer will not have had anything to do with any fixing. I think the most likely scenario is that one of the big asian betting syndicates is taking retribution because they placed a massive bet on pakistan to win and some other side bets like runs scored etc. That would be my best guess, we will probably never know though.

Looking like mistakes were made in the autopsy and that Woolmer may have died from natural causes.

Shocking.

But Shields said he was "100 per cent certain" that Sheshaiah was correct with his verdict.

"There is very clear evidence of murder, some of which I will not disclose to anybody," he added.

And it seems the people making the loudest noises about it being natural causes are the PCB...

The plot thickens...
