Title: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: JungleCat03 on March 19, 2007, 12:16:14 PM This was on TV last night.
Thought it was crazy that Billy Connelly was voted no 1. Democracy sucks! He's definitely a funny guy but surely not the no 1 stand up of all time. My list would have gone: Bill Hicks A bile spitting, chain smoking, fire-breathing legend. Grabbed america by the balls and refused to let go right up to his tragic early death. Goat-boy surely the best stand up routine of all time? Richard Prior Sour faced, dry comic genius used the dark elements of his upbringing to make the world laugh. Jack Dee Master of the dead-pan delivery. His sarcastic cynicism can be roughly translated as "ffs, neverends" in poker talk. Ross Noble/ Bill Bailey Ross interacts in a unique way with his audience, performing much of his act on the fly. Super sharp, highly surreal and very funny. Bill Bailey gets special mention for being the funniest comedian to integrate music successfully into his act. Some of his stuff is just downright brilliant and his troll-like, middle earth appearance belies his immense intelligence. Ricky Gervais Took to stand up comedy like a duck to water. Delivers his act flawlessly and can take any subject and make it funny. Great natural comedian. Lots of quality perfomers missing off this list though Who are your faves? Was hoping hed make your list + there he was right at the top. 2nd: Lee Evans for me. His intro on the Scotland xl tour has me breaking out into tears everytime. And hes just so comedy. Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: The Camel on March 19, 2007, 12:43:04 PM I was really surprised how many really moderate comedians made the top of the list.. eg: Ross Noble, Jimmy Carr, Jim Davidson etc etc.
Dave Allen, a true genius, came in about 75th. Just shows democracy doesn't work! Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: boldie on March 19, 2007, 12:47:09 PM Democracy never works. Blair running the country should have been a clue there.
and anyone who doesn't put Richard Pryor at the top of the list should not be allowed to vote :) Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: ACE2M on March 19, 2007, 01:08:00 PM saw gervais last week and it was a bit disappointing.
All others i agree with especially bill hicks and bill bailey. 'Heavens, Have a plum', 'i don't want a plum' 'the pale mythical wardens of the treasure' genius, have been saying everything like Bill Bailey for a couple of years now. Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: AndrewT on March 19, 2007, 01:09:28 PM Blimey, I've just spent 15 minutes reading a thread about this programme on another forum and then come back here to find this.
OK, here goes. Ross Noble - 'Wouldn't it be funny if monkeys read the news? Whilst wearing hats. Monkeys wearing hats, eh?' - sod off. If you want proper funny animal whimsy, watch Bill Bailey. Ricky Gervais - I'm sure the Wikipedia page for 'One Trick Pony' is just a photo of his fat face. David Brent is over - that was all you ever were. Your stand-up is appalling. Do your funny dance or sod off. Billy Connolly - utterly devastatingly funny back in the day. Not just someone who 'told jokes' but who really delivered them. Sad he's become an unfunny bitter man in the past 20 years. Bill Hicks - a revelation at the time, truly took stand-up into a new place. His death not only robbed us of a huge talent, but has also robbed us of the chance to see how he fared over a period of time. Like Hendrix, Bolan, Buddy Holly etc he never had the chance to 'go crap'. Richard Pryor - undoubtedly an important comedian, hurt by the fact that most of the footage of him we have doing stand-up is from his rambling, drug-addled period. Still quite funny, but those who saw him earlier say it doesn't compare to his previous performances. Dave Allen - the absolute master of comic timing. Had the ability to have you hanging off every word, drawing you into his story. Bernard Manning - a lot of reactionary crap gets spouted about him, the fact is his timing is spot on and he can deilver a punchline like few others. Peter Kay - Superb early on ('Top at the Tower' is hilarious) but suffers from the fact he now has no more jokes. That's it, he's done. That's enough for now. Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: thetank on March 19, 2007, 01:11:12 PM Is the show repeated on ITV2 or anything?

Also for Richard Pryor..listen to the records they are better than the video's (and even they kick Bill Hick's arse) Also Lewis Black is a very very funny man (and was doing the Bill Hicks thing before your MR Hicks was doing it) Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: AndrewT on March 19, 2007, 01:14:26 PM Is the show repeated on ITV2 or anything? Hicks Pryor Allen All great in their heyday. But I also have to put in a vote for Robin Williams. A genius in his youth. One seriously crap overactor who's earned bazillions just by being crap. But he can still do it stand up stylee. Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: rudders on March 19, 2007, 01:41:35 PM max boyce at his peak- peerless

I like Foxworthy, Rock and Izzard. Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: Graham C on March 19, 2007, 02:07:37 PM I quite enjoy Peter Kay.
Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: kinboshi on March 19, 2007, 02:13:27 PM Tommy Cooper. Pretty much a one-trick pony, but an original and one of those people who's just funny.
As for the Big Yin, some of his stand up shows are brilliant. I have laughed so much during one of his shows that it hurt. Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: Nakor on March 19, 2007, 02:19:02 PM Best 3 I have seen;
1) Noble - Brilliant, delivery, thought process has it all for me his mass appeal from the yoot to Radio 4 listeners says it all. 2) Arthur Smith, he hosts the comedy tent at glasto year after year and is simply brilliant, he is funny hour after hour, excellent observational humour. 3) Daniel Kitson, just go and see him, a modern master. Special mention for Jakie Mason, Steven Wright, Pryor (If only I had seen him), Dylan Moran and Vegas all brilliant for various reasons. Have to say think Davidson came across as a bitter old man on the show, very sad. Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: matt674 on March 19, 2007, 02:28:27 PM Didnt see show but one of my votes would be Les Dawson, especially with piano :)

To be fair I left 99 places for you to have a pop at. If you learnt to 20 table stts AND watch tv you'd avoid these problems! Ross Noble seems to be controversial. I think his act is very unique and personally he cracks me up with the bizarre world he creates. Did Steve Martin make the Top Ten? he was great back in the day At the risk of incurring a full on tank attack, he was in the top 30 somewhere i think. Ricky Gervais not funny?? BOOOOOOOOOOOOO HISSSSSSSSSSS (pantomime response beats informed debate anyday) http://youtube.com/watch?v=E_EXqdJ4L7I Not sure Jamie Foxx was anywhere to be seen in the top 100. He's pretty funny too. Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: kinboshi on March 19, 2007, 03:03:37 PM Shows how subjective comedy is, but I don't find Lee Evans remotely funny. Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: T8MML on March 19, 2007, 04:03:04 PM Have to say like most of these "phone in" top 100's the results reflect the intellect of the people that actually pay to phone in! The show was very entertaining and it was good that they showed the Big Yin before he found respectability and a live physco analyst. Eddie Izzard, Ricky Gervais and Jo Brand in the same 100 as Pryor, Williams and Chubby? Sorry - no way Pedro!
Jim Davdson did come across as sad and bitter, but then again after four divorces who wouldn't - in fairness it was only because he was so succesful did he have the cash to pay! Next week, top 100 stars of Emmerdale - start dialling now! Stephen Wright, though I don't think they showed him at his best. Jack Dee The line that had me laughing most last night though was from Chris Rock from about ten years ago - he does this Niggaz versus Black thing and he said a few things that made me laugh, the one that made me laugh the most was a along the lines: "Niggaz are always looking for acknowledgement of things the rest of us think as natural, a Nigga will often come up to you and say "I look after my kids" - "why does he want to be acknowledged for looking after his kids, you're supposed to you dumb muthafucka" He spat that out with such venom/bemusement/ridicule that I laughed for nearly a minute - that's quite a long time to laugh. Gonna make an effort to see more of his stuff. Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: Poppet7 on March 19, 2007, 08:40:47 PM Lee Evans is the best! Dave Chappelle is a great comic, again he lost his edge after a trip to africa. Those three guys are the only ones to make me laugh so hard i had to run to the toilet for fear of pissing myself. While back now I had a business conferencing company - we always tried to put on some kind of alternative to the mainstream speakers in one slot in the evening - one year we went the whole hog and put on a comedian - Jimmy Tarbuck - oho !! We were sceptical about our choice (since he wasn't someone who figured on our personal list of funny people) but it seemed like a safe ish kinda bet for a business audience (at that time mainly male dominated, 1995) Thing was, to a live audience he was very very funny, very polished, oho, and professional in the extreme (research the audience, tailor gags etc). Something definitely there in the older school performers. His hourly rate aint too shabby either - oho, oh yes ! Title: Re: Top 100 stand up comics Post by: johnbhoy76 on March 20, 2007, 12:15:05 AM The Big Yin has got to be number one. He's gone a bit shit in the last 10 years or so. These guys weren't just comics, they were social commentators too. The only kind of comedian that really matters for me.
Richard Pryor trying to kill himself by pouring a bottle of $700 cognac over himself and and setting himself on fire. he then proceeded to run down Sunset Boulevard totally naked... On fire. Legend. I even found myself laughing at Bernard Manning for once. 'So went on holiday with wife, one of these spanish apartments. but we there 1 day and she goes me, 'eyy, we forgot the Bisto!
