Title: A trainspotting hero
Post by: Snatiramas on March 19, 2007, 07:00:37 PM
Well here it is my 500th post and one that I hope is in keeping with the past 499.

I was sitting in St Pancras station waiting for my folks to arrive down on the train from Leicester this morning. We were all going to watch my son sing in the school choir at the Royal Albert Hall which let me tell you was a complete blast.

Anyway St. Pancras is a mess still. Years on from the start and yet I can't see a discernible difference. It is cold and I, cuddling up to Mrs. Snatty to keep warm, notice that on the far side of the good lady wife is a rather curious looking character. Parka coat. Cords. Shoes made by Marks and Spencer and in his hand a number of index cards. Now being a nosey type of git I lean across and see if he is learning a speech or something..........oh no much better than that he was collecting train and carriage numbers..........Why? I just don't get it. Somebody help me please there must be a reason. I have missed something here. Enlighten me. Please before I lose it completely.

Are you mad? Give me 5 minutes, interesting - nay, fascinating Link, on it's way.....

Look, any more of this, & you will be officially warned as to your conduct. Though I must say, collecting Carriage Numbers is a new fad, but it's hugely interersting, in these days of homogenous "racks" or "sets" of Rolling Stock when one finds an odd one in the set.

I'll find those links for you now. Do be patient though.

Iron my thinking was if you send PM's he will be less inclined to discuss on the forum ;)

Seriously they do include some stunning images from a architectural point of view.

Paddington must be some kind of haven for "them". Whenever i'm coming back from a visit to Swansea they're congregating on the far end of the platform looking like a bunch of... Well... Trainspotters.

Yes, Paddington is the Mecca of Trainspotters, as it is the terminal for Isambard Kingdom Brunels crowning glory, the Great Western Railway, and a truly awe-inspiring Station it is, too, with the Old Oak Common Loco Depot (shed code 81a) just 2 miles down the track, past the intriguingly named "NorthPole" station between.

For the ultimate in overnight stays book a room at the Paddington Great Western Hotel, which actually adjoins the Station, get up first thing in the morning & wander the platforms & concourse. It does not get better.

When I have an early morning flight from Heathrow, that's my drill, stay at that Hotel, then get the best of all the Airport Expresss, The Heathrow Express. (The Stanstead & Gatwick Expresses are misnomers).

Hang on a feckin minute - Who decided to take up trainspotting at the age of 17?

As if you're not too busy with underage drinking and self-abuse at that age. Wierdo!!

BTW weirdest of all are the bus-spotters in Glasgow - saw a load of them on Union Street one night.

Maybe he packed explosives in one of those chins.

Gotta love the yanks "But a meeting of US security officials in Washington in March reportedly classified "people sitting on train platforms who appear to be monitoring the timing of arrivals and departures" as suspicious behaviour. "
So basically that's ALL passengers at a train station. Dees is tha ENEMEES of freedom we must stop dem.

I took up Trainspotting at the age of 9, with my Ian Allen GWR Locomotive Register.

And Buses, they are always worth a close look, I actually saw an RT AND a RTL on the same day recently. Most of the RT's were replaced by TrolleyBuses, & then the RM took over.

Only Hornby 00 - nothing else could touch the 00. I had the full set, even the signalbox & the porters sack-trolley.
