Title: Gadget Show - Mac versus PC
Post by: Sark79 on March 19, 2007, 08:30:46 PM
Did anyone see this?    the mac looks impressive and easier to use than the PC ( Well from the TV show anyway  ).  What are the advantages and disadvantages of a mac compared to a PC?.  From the people I have met who have a mac, they all say it is far better and simpler to use.  What exactly makes them better ( in non computer language  :D ) .

Can you still get online poker, youtube and wikipedia?   I really am a simpleton when it comes to IT, lol

Macs always used to be well advanced compared to pc's.  A lot of the technology in your average modern computer would have been taken from mac ideas and available in macs years before.  They handle processing information better and are often the tool of choice for people that do graphic design, photo work, stuff like that and they quite often look quite funky.

Not many sites have poker that's mac compatable, you need to play it in a browser so stuff like Sky will work.  You can get your usual web stuff on there though :)

very few poker sites support the mac you have to run your mac as a pc which ruins the benifit of having a mac

its like vhs vrs betamax all those years ago

betamax was better but vhs was better supported thus vhs won

Nakors view - PC's forever, Macs never.

MACs are superior but are more expensive and have less software support. Personally I'd never get a MAC.

You can emulate windows, and if you get the intel power mac you can actually boot windows (the proper PC version) and run windows programs.

Of course if you doing that most of the time you might as well have a PC, unless you need the MAC for a specific purpose and don't mind rebooting.

I'd quite like one of those apple notebooks, but only because they look funky.  In reality, my lappy does the the job.

Just virtualise it, job done, no reboots.

Now if only they weren't so expensive...

probably used to be better, very little difference now in terms of technology apart from packaging. Both using virutally identical intel dual/quad core processors and chipsets.

pc's easier to mod and cheaper to get fixed.

not really much contest.

Im a mac convert, to a degree, although im still using a pc (digs heels in).
My two daughters both have iMacs and Mac books, they wont touch a pc with a barge pole  and there only 13 and 9!
I have to agree there much better allround machine, if overpriced.
Kids love them because they look cool.
In performance theres not much in them in my opinion.
If you want great looks and reliabilty then Mac is better.

My flat collective has two Macs and two PCs.  The general concensus is that Macs are easier (more intuitive) to use, have a pretty bug-free sensible operating system, have wonderful features like the way the windows you open can be organised, and are generally better for doing things like editing photos, making music and videos.  All the creative stuff.

For poker, Mac downloads are rare, and I don't trust web applets for playing, therefore it's PC all the way, but if that weren't the case, I would sell my old laptop for the £100 it's worth and buy a Mac notebook in a heartbeat.

It is possible to partition a Mac hard drive to start in 'PC Mode' and run Windows etc. but this is tricky and I think you then own 'a device' and probably won't get any support from either company.  Dana did it, though.

General concensus down on Stanley Park in Glasgow is that you should wear items of clothing underneath it though - five times now people have complained about you ;)

That Sir Bongo is a blight on the mac though :)

I am all macced up now, mac at work - 20 inch imac, macbooked up at home...the SO has just purchased an MacBookPro...

My 15 month old pc lappy is gathering dust.

Macs are so nice.

They have right click as well, which frankly sold it for me.

Surely it's better than actually running windows? ;)

As one who has no undersanding of these things, why do so many learned computer peeps sneer at Windows? It's sold a copy or two, & yes, it comes with most PC's, but Im sure the manufacturers would not use it if it were a bag of spanners.

Anyway, Mr Gates has to earn a living somehow.

I heard somewhere ( possibly an interview ) that after Bill Gates retires, he will give away most of his money. He will provide enough money for his Kids to attend a good college, etc.   I bet his Kids are over the moon with that decision  :D
