Title: taking advantadge or cheating? Post by: iceman on March 21, 2007, 04:00:19 PM a friend of mine has brought to my attention a method of playing on various sites under different aliases i.e. poker nicknames using the same real name or assumed identities. is this cheating?
Title: Re: taking advantadge or cheating? Post by: Sheriff Fatman on March 21, 2007, 04:04:45 PM On most sites having multiple accounts is a breach of their T&Cs, although not in all cases. Some sites tolerate new accounts being set up.
However, I doubt there's a site out there who would tolerate more than one of these accounts sitting at the same table or playing in the same tournament. Furthermore, I can see how any reasonable person would not consider this to be cheating. Some sites are better than others at detecting this sort of thing. I'd be inclined to avoid any site where I knew it could be done easily. Title: Re: taking advantadge or cheating? Post by: AndrewT on March 21, 2007, 04:11:26 PM Networks like Crypto and iPoker allow players with accounts at different skins to have aliases which are different. Prima, for example, force players to have the one alias across the network and will lock accounts if they find the same person using more than one alias.
However, even networks which allow different aliases will not allow the same player to sit at the same table, so there's no real advantage. Yes, you can be 'anonymous' for a while if you regularly play at certain limits, but your style of play will be similar across aliases, so you won't gain much of an upper hand. So no, it's not cheating. Title: Re: taking advantadge or cheating? Post by: iceman on March 21, 2007, 04:17:36 PM there are to my knowledge at least 3 sites where it is possible to open accounts in multiple assumed identities. ive always believed or been led to believe that a lot of people play under various names to disguise themselves from those they regularly play against and to do this they get non poker playing friends to open accounts and use them as theyre own. so when i was shown this new way i thought it was just another way of achieving this camouflage.

I think it depends on the reason for them doing so, if done with a specific prepense to gain an unfair advantage then yes it's cheating. What about this though...........Let's say Ive just set up 4 stts, first four games of my afternoon session when my internet connection goes down, so as not to do my dough i phone up my mate and get him to play them for me. because i play against the same opponents regularly i expect them to have notes on me, under these circumstances is it unfair that my opponents are unknowingly playing against someone completely different with a style that deviates significantly from my own? What is this new way? It is well known that certain players at the high limits will have a 'team' account which is essentially a group bankroll, and different members will play at different times (such as the dreamclown account which played Daniel Negreanu in heads-up matches last year). Also, I believe RookieITB's girlfriend lasted longer in today's Mansion $100K than he did... Title: Re: taking advantadge or cheating? Title: Re: taking advantadge or cheating? Post by: Sheriff Fatman on March 21, 2007, 04:38:30 PM im not sure this is what i was really talking about, but i would say deliberately playing under someone else alias would most definately be cheating i.e zeejustin. Zeejustin didn't just play under someone else's alias, he was making multiple entries into the same tournament under different aliases. Simply playing on someone else's alias is a different issue, and one likely to attract a lot of debate. Many players, including some high-profile blondeites, do this as a matter of course and don't think anything of it. Also, some major sites, such as Stars, see nothing wrong in this. Lee Jones has posted to this effect in the past on 2+2 with reference to Noah Boeken's 'Exclusive' account. Title: Re: taking advantadge or cheating? Post by: AndrewT on March 21, 2007, 04:55:19 PM i was refering to the last bit of the message, i havent got a clue what thats about An in-joke from the Mansion thread in Internet Poker - don't worry about it, it's not important. Title: Re: taking advantadge or cheating? Post by: robbiebox on March 22, 2007, 07:27:01 AM Zee Justin was later found to have been playing at the same STT , using multiple accounts on multiple computers in ther same room. This is cheating, however i dont feel sitting at the same MTT with multiple entries is giving you much, if any edge as the site will never let you play at the same table.
