Title: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Post by: I, Zimbra on March 24, 2007, 02:20:32 AM Okay, the continuing saga of computers, anti-spyware and clarion calls for assistance...
Just now I 'upgraded' Spyware Doctor on my PC; and after the restart, not only is my computer starting up even slower than it was before, but - horror of horrors - my broadband connection has packed up altogether. Now, there's nothing wrong with the broadband line itself; I know that because I'm posting this from the lappy using the wireless connection to my router, and that works just fine. But the direct LAN connection from the PC to the router is only generating "Limited Connectivity"; and when I hit the repair button, it still won't work (it says it can't be repaired because it can't 'renew my IP address'). Have any other SD users had this problem? Will it go away if I simply uninstall SD (which I am now very tempted to do?) Is there anything else I should try before biting various bullets and contacting my Broadband supplier tomorrow to spend an hour on the phone while their support guy goes through the troubleshoot checklist? As always, your help is greatly appreciated! Title: Re: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Post by: KingPoker on March 24, 2007, 02:46:33 AM As stupid as it sounds try switching off the router for 30 seconds then turn it back on. Probably wont fx it but has worked for me in the past. If it doesnt work just hit and smash it!
Title: Re: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Post by: I, Zimbra on March 24, 2007, 02:52:02 AM I did that, unfortunately it didn't help. :(
Plus, I don't think it's the router at all, because I can still use the broadband line from this (wireless) laptop. It's just the PC that won't connect. I have checked the ethernet cable, nothing wrong there either. The only thing I did was upgrade Spyware Doctor; the LAN broadband on the PC was working fine before that. But as soon as I did the upgrade, I lost connectivity. I restarted the PC, and STILL can only achieve Limited Connectivity via the LAN connection. At this point I am not sure what to do; certainly I am inclined to uninstall Spyware Doctor completely, but I don't know if that will get me my broadband back - for all I know it might make it harder to resolve the problem I have, which is why I thought it best to ask on here first; so many times it turns out to be something really simple that I've overlooked! :D Title: Re: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Post by: KingPoker on March 24, 2007, 02:54:39 AM can you disable the spyware without uninstalling it? Should be able to tell from that
Title: Re: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Post by: I, Zimbra on March 24, 2007, 03:02:32 AM I shut down spyware doctor, but the connection hasn't returned; it's still just "Limited Connectivity" and when I try to repair it it won't repair.
I have also restarted the machine several times, and that won't jolt it either. All I can think of is that the SD upgrade did something to my connection protocols, altered it somehow, and so I am now being prevented from getting an IP address using the LAN connection shortcut that I have stored on my PC. Unfortunately, I don't think I really know enough about these things to be able to fix it by myself - if nothing else works then I will have to contact my broadband supplier tomorrow and ask them why I can't connect. Pisser though, I was planning on playing tonight and that's gone for a Burton... ::) Title: Re: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Title: Re: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Post by: I, Zimbra on March 24, 2007, 03:31:05 AM God this is infuriating!
It says it's working properly. Unfazed I tried to uninstall the Ethernet anyway with a view to reinstalling it; I followed the procedure for uninstallation, restarted the PC - and when it starts back up again it tells me that the Ethernet is installed and working properly! When all this is sorted, Spyware Doctor is getting the boot; I know I paid for it and am therefore loathe to part with it, but before I decided to 'upgrade', my broadband was just fine. >:( Title: Re: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Post by: RichEO on March 24, 2007, 05:45:32 AM Does it still say limited connectivity or has that gone?
I would open the network connection and view the status and see what the IP address and default gateway is, compare that to your laptop. Usually the gateway and/or DHCP settings are wrong when it says limited or no connectivity. You can just manually enter the settings if need be. Title: Re: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Post by: I, Zimbra on March 24, 2007, 01:31:50 PM Rich, that would be the way to go for sure if I knew what I was doing.
I just tried to enter the same settings as on the laptop - it generated a 'network conflict' (an error message cropped up on the laptop telling me this, I assume that was because both PC and laptop now had the same settings and therefore were indistinguishable from each other for network purposes). I have tried varying the IP Address, putting it one down from the laptop, and although the Limited Connectivity message has gone, I still can't connect to the web on the PC from my browser. I don't suppose there's any chance that if I system restore back to this time yesterday, that this will fix the problem, will it? ;hide; Title: Re: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Post by: I, Zimbra on March 25, 2007, 02:22:01 AM I was going to ask though, have any other Spyware Doctor users had any problems with the upgrade?
(I don't mean the Smart Update, the thingy that gets you new definition files and whatnot; I mean the upgrade to the lastest version v.5 or whatever.) Title: Re: More Broadband/Spyware Doctor Help Please! Post by: Ironside on March 25, 2007, 02:43:48 AM not upgraded my desktop yet
