Title: Bad Beats and Lucky Draws book - opinions? Post by: yt on October 03, 2005, 03:33:30 PM I got a copy of Bad Beats and Lucky Draws for my birthday last week (family member searches Amazon for poker and waddya get!) and can't get over how up himself Phil Hellmuth is. Now I know this is not news to anyone but I really am struggling to finish the book in the face of Phil's 'insights' and 'feelings' about hands. Whenever he describes a hand someone played Phil AWAYS knew what the other guy was holding (or so he claims). That said some of the historical hand information is good and it's worth sticking with (just).
Phil's shameless self promotion is ruining what could have been a really good book (he self promotes almost as much as ukpoker!). I know Phil is Phil but it really makes you look away from the book in comical amazement at the size of his ego. Anyone else read it? What did you think? phil is a legend in his own mind(and kets you know that) and to play the way he states when just beginning was ok but also led to a whole heap of problems in SnG tourneys. Felt it was too simplistic and from what i can remember just made you out to be the table rock(play the top ten hands and you`ll be all right.....mmmh!). You won't learn anything from the book, but it's fine for passing the time in an airport lounge.

With regards to Helmuth, I haven't read this one, but I thought his 'Play Poker Like The Pros' was a complete mess and quite possiblt the weakest book on poker I have read. Still, he ain't half made a load of dough from his side career as a writer. Bah! Title: Re: Bad Beats and Lucky Draws book - opinions? Post by: jezza777 on October 05, 2005, 12:19:00 AM I hated Play Poker Like The Pros although the animal characterizeations wern't a bad idea > I had already read a fair few poker books tho Sklansky, SS , Caro ect so the strategy suggested was pretty basic and would mebbe protect a total begginer from doing too much damage. (to his bankroll) I have heard nothing but very good things about the Harrington books from everywhere so they are my next stop.
