Hi all, this is my first post here.  I am a long time online player but have only done small games at friends houses as far as real life events are concerned and I was thinking of venturing into my first casino in Great Yarmouth.  Has anyone ever been there and are there any things I should know on my first visit?  My friend thinks that it might be better going to somewhere like gutshot in London first as it would be less intense and there aren't as many people with ridiculous hands of cash who can just keep rebuying their way through the game.  I don't have a mammoth bankroll to play with really and was thinking of taking around 100 squids on my first trip.  Any advice would be greatly welcome!

I dont know much about Great Yarmouth Grosvenor, maybe one of ouir readers will.

But.......have you considered attending a home game for your first outing? These are far more friendly, & much less intimidating, as a way of making your "live" debut. Everyone tries to help the newbie, whereas in a live casino, that aint always the case. I strongly recommend it.

If you agree, try cheeseypoker.com, they have regular home games, & Redsimon, a friend of mine & one of our contributors, sometimes attends them I think, hopefully he will chime in with some additional info.

There is also a nice home game in Grantham, but I am not at liberty to invite you, or anyone else. Hopefully, the handsome young man & quite splendid player who runs the game will see this & enter the fray......

Hi cheers.  Took a look at www.cheeseypoker.co.uk and it looks like fun, might have to look for a game or two a bit nearer to home though.  Am I right in thinking that pot limit is played a lot more than it is online?

I dont actually live in Great Yarmouth (thankfully ;)) but I think it is the nearest casino to me, I live near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk which is about an hour from Ipswich/Yarmouth/Cambridge.  I think I will ask what my friends want to do but I think I will stick to the advice on Cheesey Poker and only take 3 times the buy in on my first visit!  It wouldn't be too much fun if I lost too much on my first outing!

He would be welcome at my game Tikay but Bury is a LONG way from Grantham for a couple of 10 STTs.

Hi Rupert, I can comment re: both Great Yarmouth grosvenor and the cheesy poker home games as these were the first two places I ever played poker. My first experience was at the grosvenor in GY. It has it's usual mix bag of runners (approx 35ish) of rocks and gamblers but suggest you just play tight for the first 30 mins to get a read of your table as certain people at Great Yarmouth just love to gamble and very much overplay A-rag and low pocket pairs. On my first ever game there I played tight, only had one buy-in and made the final as chip leader with about 40% of the total chips. Sadly I finished just outside the money and guess this was because I wasn't use to playing for such a long period. Do not fear for there are not that many sharks in Great Yarmouth and it is a generally relaxed game where they tend to help new faces rather than bully them. I played there most weeks last year and made the final probrably a third of the time and never needed more than 3 rebuys in anyone session.

Re: cheesy poker. This is a good place for a nice friendly environment and the benefit is that they have 3 small freezeout comps in the one session. The only thing you should know is that it is full of Luton regulars so good knows how I came out of there with a profit :).

First of all thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it.  35 ish people sounds like a decent number to compete against, in live tournaments how many places typically pay?  Always good when people help us out, I think I know must of the things I need to know from playing with friends who have been to casinos and things but I am just a little anxious as you would probably expect.  If you get quite far what sort of time will you be playing until?  Just wondering if I need a lot of coffee or something to keep me going 8)

7 final / pay top 5 / normally finish 2:30ish with a deal usually agreed between the top 2 or 3.
