Title: A new day...
Post by: smithy69 on April 03, 2007, 10:16:10 AM
Today I have decided to stop gambling on sports and online poker.

I think itcould develop into a problem as lately I have been spending far too much time in bookies and online betting on sports that I honestly dont know about. I am gambling out of boredom I think which is the wrong.

I have changed all my deposit limits to £0 on all my online accounts and have promised myself I won't walk into a bookies.

I would still like to play live poker as this is more of a social thing, but will limit myself to a £10 rebuy on a wednesday plus probably a £20 freezeout.

I have been finding myself earning over £700 take home a week, and by a monday(get paid on a friday) after a night out and alot of gambling I aint left with alot. I have to support my daughter to the best of my ability and gambling away money isnt the way

Do you think I should stop playing live aswell, or would that be ok.

Smithy, only you will know yourself well enough to be able to tell if a £10 rebuy or a £20 freezeout will satisfy your gambling urge as a bit of fun, or whether it will fuel it, meaning you're better off staying away altogether.

Imagine you play in the rebuy and lose, say £50. The next day someone gives you a 'good thing' for the 2.40 at Kempton - a chance to win your money back. Will you be able to resist backing the horse?

I did something similar a few years ago - i managed to not have a bet for 2 weeks and really struggled to stay away from the bookies
, once the 2 weeks got out the way I never showed an interest and didnt have a bet of any kind for 3 years.

I am unsure what to do, as I can afford to gamble if I do it sensibly as I have a ok week, what I cannot afford to do is lose week after week after week.

When you go to the casino to play poker - leave your cash cards and credit cards at home.

Take cash with you and just enough to play the tourney you want (with the number of rebuys you want).  That way you won't be tempted by a cash game, the pit games, or whatever else.

Playing live poker with a limit on what you're spending is the same as going and playing a round of golf, or going out for a drink with the lads.  Spend the money as though you aren't going to see it again - and if you win anything - treat it as a bonus and spend it on your daughter.

I used to gamble every day at the bookies, really coz i was bored.

You have to suppliment gambling with another activity that will keep you occupied. I found online computer games, but there are tons of things to do that are free and dont involve risks.

Look around, find something that will fill the vacume.

thanks for that well thought ou advice dicey lololol

I only gamble when I am bored. Last night I was playing Bingo ffs for money . That is a joke

I have a few activities that might keep me busy(keep stum dice), but I leave my house at 7.30am, get home at 9pm usually and just get on the laptop to chill out. I think this is where I am going wrong.

I was thinking of buying the ps3

Seeing as you've already got a PC then either Football Manager 2007, Civilisation 4 or World of Warcraft should successfully rob you of hours of your life.

;D

all we need to do now is find a smithy69 from a parallel universe, get one of them to carry on gambling and one of them to stop and see who is happier in 5 years time.

Smithy - any preferences to which of your alter egos we choose? (preferably the one who hates to give up gambling!!)

Dont mention paralell universes, i still have a headache from watching a Horizon episode last night on them! Would like to say whooosh but somehow i understand it now, didnt last night!

Smithy, you may wanna give up everything but why not for the moment just give up the sports betting. Its a mugs game if you dont know what you are doing and im guesing you spend more money on that than on poker. But if you said you tried to stop before but only lasted two weeks then you might have quite a problem with it.

probably because your alter ego on Zargon3 watched the same program but understood it completely so as you both slept last night your telepathic messages crossed over the space time continuum and you absorbed his understanding.

simple :)

Very true they believe there is a infinite number of universes in which every scenario posssible to what i think actually happens so in one i must have invented the theory on the paralell universes so i really do understand i guess.

This may sound glib but it's not meant to.

Pick up a good book - bit more fulfilling and worthwhile over time than gorging on 3rd person shoot em ups - unless it's Duke Nukem of course.
