Just checked my credit card bill and i got a charge for using my credit card to pay for my APAT seat. Its for a "cash advance". I hardly ever use my credit card so thats how i noticed it. Did everyone get this charge? Its only a few pounds but its more the fact i dont like giving these people any more money than i really need to.

This is the fault of the guys used by APAT to collect the funds. It was highlighted on Watchdog a couple of weeks back and is becoming a widespread problem on ebay apparently.

APAT does not charge any payment or refund fees to our members, despite our paying both to our payment provider. 

Please provide details of the charge levied to customer@apat.com and we will investigate with Metacharge. 

Similarly, APAT are not aware of any Watchdog programme which may have focussed on payment providers or card
charges.

It was a charge from my credit card company and not Metacharge as it came up seperately on my bill. I was just interested in whether or not other Blondes were charged or whether or not it was just my company that was doing this.

Spoke to the credit card company quickly and they said that all gambling is now treated as cash advance so thats why the charge has been made.

This is becoming more common in the Creditcard world.  Halifax for example treat all gaming transactions as a cash advance.  This means that you may be charged a handling fee (varies betwen 2%-3% with a minimum of £2-£3) on the transaction AND you will pay interest from day one and not be entitled to the "up to 56 days interest free" as retail transations are.  Some companies also have cash at a higher APR.  Also be careful if you have a 0% purchases card with a high balance that you don't pay interest on.  If you make a cash transaction, the payment allocation will pay off your balance that is at 0% before your cash balance.  Therefore that transaction will accrue interest from day one until you pay off the 0% balance in full (which could be 6 months plus).  I work in the industry and we are currently looking into this.  The official line is that cash has a higher risk of default, and gambling is a cash transaction.  The real reason is that the competition commission is cracking down on the fees that can be charged and the sale of insurance, so companies need to find other ways to get income from their customers.  This will vary depending on your provider, my advice is to check your T & C's and if a charge exists find an alternate payment method.

Interesting that it's considered as a cash advance by some and not others.  Guess I've been fortunate with the cards I've been using so far.

I still fail to see how they can say that entry into a poker tournament is a cash advance though?  :dontask:
