Title: So what would you think? Post by: TightEnd on April 04, 2007, 12:14:49 PM You are facing a tricky decision in a live tournament against an unknown opponent
Facing a big bet on the turn with a straight draw and flush draw but big implied odds and your opponent is talking to you. He seems from your limited appraisal to be accomplished at speech-play and he has tilted several opponents. He says "I'd pass if I were you. By the way I am a congenital liar" what are you making of this sentence? Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: marcro on April 04, 2007, 12:17:07 PM I'd be very wary of anyone who uses the word "congenital".
Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: Newmanseye on April 04, 2007, 12:18:21 PM Truth be told, if this was live and I had a straight draw and a flush draw, with some mug talking it up, i might well just jam here, The ITO are greater than anything else, you tilt this guy and its payday imho.
Not much info to go on but i am relating form a similar experience. Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: Graham C on April 04, 2007, 12:26:14 PM I'd ignore the chatter and go with what I felt was the right play.
Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: Claw75 on April 04, 2007, 12:35:20 PM I'd probably play right into his hands and give him all my chips.
Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: KingPoker on April 04, 2007, 12:41:02 PM I wouldn listen to what he said. If he's good at it which you suggesed will be very hard to decypher. Only you can know possibly from prevous lines he had said on the table against other players and the hand being shown can you start to piece it together.
Its either push or fold. The straight is the only hand you can hit which gives you the implied odds. I fear he is betting big to prevent you from flushing so will slow down if it comes. I still think you have more than enough outs on the flop to be 50/50 (maybe even 60/40 but i could be making that up!) here if not a favourite if you have overs to the board aswell. With a staright and flush draw though i would easily come over the top, depending on the chips stacks you have, a reraise may sufice as you have already built the pot nicely if the flush does come. If the straight comes it's payday anyway. Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: kinboshi on April 04, 2007, 12:41:16 PM Tell him you can get cream for that.
Then ask him how he knows he'd fold if he was you - what does he think you've got? Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: TightEnd on April 04, 2007, 12:46:57 PM A person who says they are a congenital liar is telling the truth or lying?
to be fair, it was quite a good line to use against me. My sub-rainman tendencies got me thinking about the semantics of language rahter than the hand Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: kinboshi on April 04, 2007, 12:49:21 PM A person who says they are a congenital liar is telling the truth or lying? to be fair, it was quite a good line to use against me. My sub-rainman tendencies got me thinking about the semantics of language rahter than the hand It's a paradox. Like: This sentence is false. More on that here http://www.iep.utm.edu/p/par-liar.htm The way to make logical sense of it is that a liar can also tell the truth - they don't have to be lying 100% of the time. Therefore you can never be certain if what they are saying is the truth or not. But like you said, better to worry about the statement at a later date, and deal with the hand first. Post by: londonpokergirl on April 04, 2007, 01:29:15 PM Call , hes lying ;)
plus you're getting the odds Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: AndrewT on April 04, 2007, 01:49:09 PM He says "I'd pass if I were you. Non Standard I missed Standard and he had a monster or not? Top trips. He wanted the call Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: lazaroonie on April 04, 2007, 02:38:08 PM irrespective of the speech being used, talkers will generally want a call - it stands to reason. They know theyve got it so are going to be a bit more relaxed. think about this
if you dont have it and give away a tell then worst possible outcome = busto, out of the tourney. if you do have it and give away a tell then worst possible outcome = dont get a caller. still in tourney. Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: matt674 on April 04, 2007, 06:54:42 PM See if he holds it together whilst explaining. If he waffles, or is a little shaken up by your questioning, push. If he's coherent, fold. what if he just shrugs his shoulders and says "dunno, i read it in a tightend post on blondepoker"? Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: JungleCat03 on April 04, 2007, 07:15:14 PM Yeh the statement "I am a liar" is paradoxical.
It reminds me of the old riddle. You are travelling to a town called blondeville. You come to a fork in the road. One way leads to death and destruction. The other to blondeville. Sat in front of the fork are two men. A sign above them reads,"One of these men is a liar, the other tells the truth." You can only ask one question to one of the men. How do you find the way to blondeville? (If you know the answer let someone else have a go) Title: Re: So what would you think? But I'm not allowed to answer because I have to give someone else a go... Is this right (in small yellow) Sod it, don't know how to make it invisible. I'll post it again later Title: Re: So what would you think? Post by: JungleCat03 on April 04, 2007, 11:58:53 PM The solution is.....
Ask one of them "If I asked your mate which way to blondeville, what would he say?" Then always go the opposite way |
