Title: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 04:01:50 PM Hello UK - I am finally set in the luxurious press area of the Casino here in Baden, about to go and see what I've missed this morning. So, one flight, two trains and a tram later, I've made it (somehow) from Wien to Baden and that's all that matters.
I could start this live update with a moan about delayed flights and delayed trains (the latter responsible for Tikay not being here quite yet) but instead I'll just say that it's about as glamorous as can be over here, and there's decent internet access, which is enough to be getting on with... Please bear with me as I scout out the players and catch up from ever-helpful Rolf Slotboom, who had me a corner of a table all set and ready this afternoon. Bless. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: spacefrog on October 04, 2005, 04:03:34 PM You tell me how the French are having in chips.
Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 04:07:10 PM Sure, spacefrog - I will find as many as I can. The actual tournament area is on a different floor to us Press, so there may be intermittent silence as I go and get chip counts etc. at least until the rest of Team Blonde arrive.

Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Frantic on October 04, 2005, 04:20:15 PM Hi Djinn,
How many entrents are there? Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 04:21:34 PM No problem... All I know for now is that with the blinds at 150 - 300 (starting stack 10,000 with a very reasonable structure), among the early exits were numbered Isabelle Mercier and Greg Raymer, and the early stack-doublers included Marcel Luske and Roland de Wolfe. Going to hunt for El Blondie et al now.
Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 04:22:16 PM Entrants were 175 or thereabouts, Frantic.
Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: strak33 on October 04, 2005, 04:23:23 PM When possible djinn could you get a chip count on david barrie ( bazzaboy) if you can find him. thank you

Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 04:35:48 PM Just as I started on the old chips, they're on a 10 minute break...
Well, here's what I got in the few moments before they all started wandering around - all 119 who are left in... Ben Grundy 8,825 Julian Thew 8,300 (although went right down to 3k at the start and says his chips "feel like 25,000 now") Iwan Jones 6,300 (and gave his name spelling as F..I...S...H although I only wanted the first letter) Jonas Helness 26,000 Roland de Wolfe 25,500 Simon Trumper 9,600 Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 04:39:05 PM Apparently, Marcel is busy with the DVD (not out as far as Rolf can tell me) but he's busy with lots of things.

Ben Grundy 8,300 Robert Cooper 10,200 Julian Thew 16,000 Iwan Jones 7,500 Roland de Wolfe 35,000 Simon Young 8,700 (of the Sun fame) Noah Boeken 30,000 Rob Hollink 31,000 Marcus Golser 38,000 Henry Nowakowski 27,000 Daniel Larsson 8,200 Erich Hallman 14,000 Peter Muhlbeck 33,000 Patric Antonius 27,000 Jeff Lisandro 16,000 Cecilia Nordenstam 14,500 Mark Teltscher 12,200 Cristof Haller 5,000 Kjersti Grini 24,000 Marcel Luske 13,000 John Kabbaj 12,500 Abel Meiberg 33,000 Simon Trumper 8,500 Martin Pollack 2,000 Daniel Smits 15,700 Marcus Freiberg 68,000 Paul Testud 46,000 Mikael Thuritz 6,000 Thorsten Iverson 52,000 Henrik Joern 74,000 (looking like the chip leader, or thereabouts) Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 06:10:49 PM There is a notable lack of Dave Colclough here - I will endeavour to track him down and find out what happened. Likewise Jonas Helness. The main ballroom-type tournament area has oh-so-quietly filled with cash games, which might be a place to start.
Since the field has so quickly reduced itself, there's been a slight change of plan. Instead of playing down to 80 tonight (there are now 83) it will go to level 11 (we're on level eight), which is being estimated at 2am. So I'll get a chance to redeem myself for the quiet start... Oh and Tony has landed and will be here any minute. It's all clicking into place.. The blinds are currently at 400 - 800, and to give you some idea of how well your friends are doing, the average chips are 22,500. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 06:24:07 PM ******************CORRECTION********************
Just because I've been wandering round for the last couple of hours without bumping into him doesn't mean El Blondie is out. In fact, he has 20,000-odd and has been moved to Julian's table. Picture coming to prove he's really there. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: the American on October 04, 2005, 06:24:23 PM How Bout NOAH updates and PICs

Noah was in the small blind (with QQ, as it happens) and had just limped like one other person. When the cards were being taken back to be reshuffled, big blind man decided to push all-in with King high, and was called by Noah. They didn't stand up, however and he's dropped below average chips. Pics coming next round...

Any word with b - z - z in it sounds a little like another similar word. Apologies. It's a bit dark in here (excuse, excuse). Well, to make it all better, here's some accurate news:
Simon Trumper - OUT Iwan Jones - OUT Robert Cooper - OUT Ben Grundy - OUT (Having sat on a short stack for ages nicking the blinds (600 - 1,200 with a 100 ante right now) he made another double-up shot move with A10 from the button. The cutoff raiser had JJ, so that didn't work. The success story from Ben's table is undoubtedly chip leader Daniel Larsson, who has over 105,000 and has been getting hands and eliminating the little stacks ferociously. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Ironside on October 04, 2005, 08:03:44 PM Simon Trumper - OUT Iwan Jones - OUT Robert Cooper - OUT do there wives and partners know about this sudden rush of laying down with queens on the poker curcuit? Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 08:05:20 PM Hello Ironside!
Yes it's all quiet and well-behaved on blonde, similarly in Baden. There's something about sumptuous surroundings which seem to quieten the players a tad. Not that their play is that quiet - poor old Sverre Sundbo is now following his compatriots having been knocked out very early. He built up his chips to 16k within the first two blind levels, only to find his set of Aces cracked by a flush which drew out on him (he passed on the spade-y river). Then, in his own words, "I worked my way up with intense grace" only to find pocked Jacks and a "crazy psycho" against him on a 2d 3c 4h flop. Sure enough, they got it all in and Psycho turned over kd 4s, only to spike the King and send nice Sverre to the rail. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 08:09:21 PM btw, that was not what I meant there Ironside, and you know it... :-*
Some counts: Julian Thew 38,000 Roland de Wolfe 45,000 Noah Boeken 18,300 Rob Hollink 24,000 Daniel Larsson 105,000 Alexander Stevic 25,000 Patric Antonius 70,000 Kjersti Grini 83,000 Frode 37,000 Marcus Freiberg 71,000 Paul Testud 25,000 Buzzer from Germany (who is now correctly identified) 20,000 Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 08:11:22 PM Roland de Wolfe has been busy pretty much nonstop. Most recent Roland news: He bluffed Paul Testud off his pocket kh ks on the river with 8h 4h which, need I say it, was not ahead. He's had ups and downs but hasn't gone out yet and looks to be on an 'up.'
Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Robert HM on October 04, 2005, 08:14:31 PM Could Roland be on his way to add EPT champ to his CV to join the WPT title? I heard him addressed as champion of the Wycombe Poker Tournament at the poker million party, glad he had a sense of humour
Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 08:17:02 PM Tikay, fresh from Roland's side, puts him on about 50,000, although he's not 'update friendly' i.e. doesn't stack his chips in nice countable piles. Likes to spread out a bit.
Also, just saw a short stack double up with ad qc vs Kjersti Grini's qh 6s. The position of the players (Kjersti on cutoff, other guy on button) leads me to wonder whether her 80kish stack might have been the product of getting away with a good bit of uncalled aggression. One for the ladies. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: M POWER on October 04, 2005, 08:18:23 PM Good luck to Julian
Fab reporting too Jenn Have a great time Regards M Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 08:27:00 PM Robert Cooper went out in a three-way coup taking his AJ against the 10 10 re-raiser and the AK extra caller. "Fed up of people re-raising preflop" and a run of AQ type non-hitters. That's just how it goes sometimes... They really seem to be in 'double up or go out' mode now, with the short stacks taking chances to be able to come back tomorrow with a few more chips. 49 players left.

Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 08:59:55 PM Roland just lost the vast majority of his chips raising all-in for 70,000 or thereabouts on the cutoff with ah kd, only to find the button with asp ac!

Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 09:05:25 PM Noah Boeken Gets Out Of Jail News now...
Having just received a straight on board which saved his AK from being destroyed by KK, Noah was all-in again (my informants tell me against the same poor guy) with ac 6s all-in preflop against, yes, kc kh. The board came, in order, js 8h 5s qc.... ad to take him to 50,000. An already dangerous player looking a little more chipped up. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 09:07:03 PM Do you think Gus is one of the reasons so many Danes are going poker crazy? Do you all play like him??
Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Powerdane on October 04, 2005, 09:11:02 PM A part of the reason for sure - a tv-station started sending from the wpt 1 season where gus was extremely strong, so that has played a great role! Now we get all of these different show all over tv - its really crazy! I have been living some time in Germany and the poker "wawe" is not nearly as great there!
And no - I dont think we all play like Gus :-) Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 09:11:42 PM Other counts from the hugely diminished field:
Dave Colclough 21,000 Daniel Larsson 82,000 Alexander Stevic 24,000 Patric Antonius 117,000 Kjersti Grini 62,000 Just going back to check on Julian and give him your collective support, after indulging in some of the wonderful desserts this place has hidden in a back room which Tikay found. Mmm, profiteroles. It just doesn't get any better. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Powerdane on October 04, 2005, 09:13:54 PM Do you know the story of Kjersti Grini? Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 09:18:36 PM By diminished, I mean there are 38 players left.
The blinds are currently 800 - 1600 with a 150 ante. A little dissatisfaction expressed by Henry Nowakowski over how quick it's all gone, but given that this is a Problem Universally Applied to the EPT, this tournament actually has a much better structure than Barcelona, at least... Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 09:23:34 PM Yeah I heard that about Kjersti! Extraordinary... well she certainly is a competitive person, and judging from her performance at the Vic and now out here, she has changed field to another she has natural skill in.

There are going to be about a third of the players they originally intended to end today with when we come back tomorrow morning (yes, morning!)

Play has ended for the nght, & Jen has trotted off to get the Overnight Chip counts, which she will post within the next 10 minutes. There are, amazingly, just 36 plyers left. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: RED-DOG on October 04, 2005, 09:48:19 PM I'm really glad you pointed that out
Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 09:49:29 PM Rolf Slotboom informs me (tikay again) that Noah Boaken failed to survive the day, eventually perisihing in the furnace of intense aggression that's modern day poker. Put another way, he's busted out. I believe El Blondie has around 29k. Jen not back yet from doing the Overnight chip counts. Talk amongst yourselves for a few minutes, please. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Djinn on October 04, 2005, 11:12:30 PM So I just copied it off successful-downloader Rolf. Job done. It's been a travel heavy day over here so I think we may be off to our hotel, wherever that is. I've had my backpack under my seat, so to speak, for the duration of Day 1... we'll be here right from the start tomorrow so hope you'll find a way to take a peek.

Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: Royal Flush on October 05, 2005, 12:21:33 AM Was this tournament horribly structured, or did they expect a lot more runners?
Seems unusual to get the estimate so far off. Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: SuffolkPunch on October 05, 2005, 12:55:40 AM Overall the tournament was superb. They kept bringing around these tasters of food, slamon, fiillet steak... whatever you wanted really. Plus any free drinks you can imagine.
Compared to the Vic and Barcelona this tournament got a 9/10.... if they could alll get to this standard it would be great. Structure was good. They even played level 9 twice (for two hours) The scandies are here in force. At one point with just 5 tables left i was on a table with 7 other scandies...... they are taking over! Title: Re: EPT in Baden Live Update Day 1 Post by: The Truth on October 05, 2005, 07:19:46 AM Well done Jen. Thank you for the updates they really are appreciated.
