Title: Flopped a monster.................................draw
Post by: Newmanseye on April 04, 2007, 11:52:18 PM
Should I have been more aggressive?

My opinion is i was getting a caller even if i pushed on the flop. so could i have played it better, I ask as this is the third time i have had one of these today and i have not made much from the situation.

Open-ended straight flush draw (if you get to see the turn and the river):

  • Against top pair - about a 63-37 favourite
  • Against an overpair - about a 56-44 favourite
  • Against two pairs - about a 53-47 favourite
  • Against a higher flush draw - 44-56 underdog
  • Against a set - about a 42-58 underdog

PUSH!!

(although In this case, I'm sure he'd have called anyway)

I don't think pushing on the flop is a good idea.

The pot is very small, so you have little fold equity for one thing.

You have a big hand (even though it's not a made hand right now, which is irrelevant at this stage) so you want to get paid. After all, you wouldn't push all in with a set here.

You have position, so this gives the ability to maximise your winnings if you hit your hand, and minimise your losses if you miss.

I think the hand was played perfectly. You raised the flop, and then bet the pot on the turn. Even if you're raised on the turn, then that's not a problem (unless his raise is very big.) You would just stall, and make a "reluctant" call.

If you miss your hand, as you did, then just check/fold of course. If you hit then you can build the pot on the river. You would have to be wary of a higher flush of course, but playing the hand this way would typically save you money against a A/K/Q-high flush too.

I'm not a full ring player but at 6 max I would generally be raising my button here to isolate the bad limper in position.

You flopped a gigantic draw and at this point I am thinking how to get my money in.  I think your raise is too small - I make this about $1.50 bearing in mind his small lead and the call of it - from here, if I get raised 3x then I commit myself to the pot by either repopping again for about 3x or shoving depending on stack sizes.

As played, I bet the turn too (although your bet seems fairly small) - I think pot is ~$3.25 so I'd be betting about $2.50 here.

I'm not sure you get many worse hands to call a river bet so checking behind seems fine.

I think you should have put in a bigger bet on the turn, at least the size of the pot
