Title: Paddy Power Irish Open: Day 1 - At A Glance
Post by: snoopy1239 on April 05, 2007, 06:35:56 PM
Hello and welcome to the Paddy Power Irish Open blonde live updates.

Morning!  It's half two and the room is already buzzing.  This event is so timed that hordes of players have just migrated from Monte Carlo over here, and even though the ballroom at the Burlington is plenty spacious, they're going to have to squeeze to get all 700 in here.

PLUS the supersat last night had a ridiculous number of runners, eventually finishing at around 2am, as the many players who already had a seat won some money and those who didn't hoovered up the last remaining seats.  They are now changing hands at a premium, and I feel sorry for those disorganised souls who make the trip this afternoon only to see their chances of playing the PaddyPower Irish Open to be as slight as Snoopy in profile.

Due to start at 4pm - going to check on who's here and who was organised enough to get a seat in advance.

After 11 minutes and 15 seconds, the first player from this year's Irish Open has been eliminated.

And it was a big name too in Carlos Mortensen, all-in with Aces versus Kings, the Spaniard's opponent rivered a flush with his Kc, the board reading Jc 2c 5d 4c 5c.

is padraig playing this year?

Yep - there were even rumours he'd get in our Media Tourney (seeing as he writes for Cardplayer - we protested on the grounds he was too good) but he looks like he's settled for the Main Event - just starting to comb the room (they've taken off the scrolling Draw List so anyone we haven't already noted is now lost in the giant tournament area)...

So far noted a couple more:

Nicolas Levi
Santi
Tim Flanders
Pippa Flanders
Niamh Peters
Tony Chessa
Andreas Hagen
Jeff Kimber
Mickey Wernick
Peter Eichhardt
Paul Jackson
Michael Greco
Mel Judah
Mats Iremark
Barney Boatman

Sharing a table are Karl Mahrenholz, Ali Mallu and Tim Flanders; two Dusk Till Dawners were drawn straight away on the TV table - Carlo Citrone and Richard Ashby.

Or how about this for an interesting feature table - Holstrups, Kevin O'Connell, Jonas Molander and Jules 'Hartwith' Adamson...

At least the TV table has a guy in a green cowboy hat, however, who happens to be Roberto Romanello.

BA Kildalen has already been in the press room with camera and tripod; he's still working even while trying to get the better of his table which includes "Lucy Rokach, who's being a nightmare.  She's been all in three times already.."

Dave Colclough Reports as the blinds are raised to 50/100:

DTD's DC (that's a lot of initials) is handing us notes from his starting table which he describes as "good - I recognise two or three Dubliners from previous visits, but no names, three qualifiers..."

The first hand he played:  3s 3d in the small blind.  Two limpers, unraised, flop 7-7-Q.  Checked round.
Turn: 3   Dave bets 200, the big blind deliberates re-raising, but eventually smooth calls.
River:  Q  Check-check; early loss for DC but no real harm done (9,750)...

...which bumps back up to 11k after 25 minutes when he sees a T-3-2 flop (raised to 250, with a caller pre) with 9c Tc, check raising to take it down.
___________________________

Third hand (he notes 'buses' which I think must ring a bell for anyone who's got a rush in triplets):

He makes it 250 with Td Th, the small blind re-raises to 525; call from DC.  Flop:  J-Q-K rainbow.  The small blind bets out 500 - call ("I think this is cheap..").
Turn:  9  He checks, Dave bets 1,500, he raises to 6,000, Dave is all-in and...

He passes Aspades Ahrt face up for his last 3k.

18,300 for El Blondie, and it's only Level Two.

George Geary has doubled up to 20k with Aces v A-K on an Ace high Flop.

-------------------

With a Flop of Td 4d Qd, Dave Colclough's 1,250 bet was smooth called by the button, and then again on the 9h Turn, this time 1,825.

Dave gave it up on the 6s River and checked, but called his opponent's 3.5k bet, mucking as his opponent showed Pocket Queens.

-------------------

Last year's champion, Vincent Melinn, is on 10,150.

-------------------

Shortstack, but still cheery as ever, George 'The Panzer' Danzer, has just doubled up to 6.2k with A-Q vs. 5-5 on a 6-2-A-8-8. Looked like Simon Mycock was the contributer.

-------------------

Meanwhile, Mad Turk put Praz Bansi down to the felt with a full house over full house encounter, Pranzi calling a 2.5k to 6.5k River re-raise with 2-2 vs. 9-9 on a 2-7-T-T-9 board.

Yes, I've abandoned wireless ship too now (though it pains me to do it) and gone for the practically cups-on-some-string approach.  Facilities here stretch to one chair per three updaters, half the room has to get power through a complicated system of fourway-to-fourway chain, and no one is online apart from us currently.

Never mind!  The tournament is going wonderfully, an amazingly prompt start, 700 happy players and an interesting mix of international jetsetters and qualifiers.  The room is speckled with PaddyPower T-shirts, in their tasteful black/gold colour scheme (what a good choice, reminds me of ours) which makes it tricky for me as I am terrible at facial recognition of players, and tend to describe Mateys by hair/shirt/amusing accessories.

I don't know if Ramzi Jelassi knows who his left hand side neighbour is - Shaf in the first level re-raised preflop out of the big blind after there was a raise to 150 called in two spots, getting rid of the opposition, including his much softer-spoker Swedish neighbour.  I wonder how much lairy-ness he'll be able to get away with before people start to wonder about the quality of his raising hands.

Mazhar Nawab      21,500
Dave McGeachie    9,800
Paul Zimbler          35,000

Phil Cooklin has enjoyed a good start, with an 18k stack, although he did just run into a spot of bad fortune, betting 300 on a 3c Kc Jc Qh board with 9c Ts, only to be beaten on the 6c River by Ac 8h.

I found a good way of getting easy chip counts was to wait at the bottleneck of the tournament area (from which all players were banished for the break) and shout, "Chipcount?!" as they passed me.  Here's what I gleaned (about to scour the whole room, which may take up to half an hour):

Paul Gourlay     6,000
Ash Hussain      7,750
Pete Haslam     8,000
Bhupinder Kohli   9,000
Stephen Pearce  28,000
Richard Ashby     15,000
Jim Kerrigan         OUT
Praz Bansi            OUT
Carlo Citrone      9,500  (no hands over two hours on the TV table, except for a 75-nicking KK - now off that table)
Devilfish            14,000
Mickey Finn        8,000
David Poole        11,000
Strummer          12,000

Barney Boatman is OUT.

"It just wasn't my day," he said in defeat.

---------------

Nicolas Levi is also OUT.

He was down to just 2.5k after a torrid first few levels, and found himself up against 8-8 after re-raising from the blind with A-2. No help arrived.

-------------

Joe Beevers is down to 4k.

Pascal Perrual and Jennifer Tilley are both OUT, the latter ran a straight into a bigger one.

------------

Meanwhile, the bad beat of the day goes to Stephen McLean, who had Aces v Kings on a K-A-3 flop, but was outdrawn by Quads on the River.

OK, I counted chips until the world started to go fuzzy round the edges - the order in which these appear is the order I got to the tables, therefore the further they are from the start of the list, the more likely they are to be still accurate:

Dave Masters (whose stack has apparently now recovered to 19k after this) just lost a chunky pot to neighbour (Patrick Rath, according to my list).  With the blinds at 100/200 he raised to 1,875 over two limpers (as you do).  Rath called out of position - the flop:
7h Kd 9h  Rath checked in the dark, Dave bet out 3k almost immediately.  A decent think later, "Clock!" calls Dave and his opponent called, gingerly.
Turn:  6d  Now Rath moves in for around 5,500.  Dave calls, with 5d 5h - he sees Ad 7d against him.
River:  Qd  and it's the flush, in the end, which officially wins that big pot.  "What a call preflop..." marvels Dave Masters, and I'm inclined to agree with him...

George Danzer is OUT - and bravely volunteered his story:

Down to under 5k, he said, "I meant to raise to 300 with K-5."  Alarm bells went off - this wasn't going to be pretty... He actually threw in 3,000 and when the big blind pushed he had to put in his last 1,200...facing A-K it was a quick walk of shame, and he said, "I'll see you in Vegas..."

Mickey Wernick is OUT, and it was with those Darn Queens that seem to haunt him.

Con O'Sullivan the assassin with Ace King.

-------------

Chris Smith is on 11k. He was down to 4k at one point, but nicked his way up to 5.5k before doubling up with Nines vs. Ace King.

Ian Herbert raised it up to 800, Mark O'Donnell made it 2,400, Ian pushed and Mark called for 3k more.

Whilst Ian nervously revealed his Pocket Tens, perhaps thinking that at best he was in a coinflip situation, Mark showed a rather intriguing Ac 8c, which, come the Qh 2s 8h 9s Qs board, failed to improve, subsequently ending his stint in the comp.

And let's not leave out Paul Zimbler, who's lost a bit after his early lead... his table encouraged him to relate how he "gave away chips"- once someone "didn't lay down AK" to a big re-raise, and another time Paul's Queens bet a K-9-6 flop (2k) got called, checked the 6 turn and tried to get the other guy off the 9 river with a 4.5k bet.  K-Q wasn't having it, and that was another 7k chunk out of his chip tower.  Still over 15k, though.
___________________________

Julian Thew:  "Up over 10k at last."  He called a button's raise with Kc Qc, and they both checked the 3-4-6 flop.  The turn brought a Js - now the button bet 1,100, Julian made it 2,600 and was called.  River:  Qs (making a flush possible) and Julian checked his top pair, and then called the Button's 4,500 bet  - he was shown the 9c 5c busted flop up'n'down draw in return, and is now on 15,700.

The wonderfully named Oliver Spagnuolo is OUT, moving in with Q-J but finding himself in a 4-way pot against Kings, Queens and a mucked hand.

The board read 5h 4s 7s 4h 6s, meaning Sorel Mizzi took the lion's share (although not the whole pot) with the cowboys.

Updates on Sorel Mizzi (imper1um) , Jeff Garza (ActionJeff) and Annette_15 plz. For the online railbirds out there! Oh yeah gobboboy too.

I know that Gobboboy has exited (the majority chip dent from running A-K into A-A with the likely consequence)... will check on the others in next circuit.

Hartwith was hovering on 11,500 (about 1k less than he had 2 hours ago) last time I got to his table.  He described his play as "awful; weak-tight and crap poker all round."  It looked like vocalising his irritation with himself kind of snapped something inside, as that very hand he raised preflop in early position to 825 (I think), got one caller and then Kevin O'Connell repopped it a couple of thousand.  Jules' response - instant push for 7,700.  Kevin really thinks about it, but gives him the benefit of the doubt and a few flopless thousand.

John Kabbaj is eliminated in a nicely dramatic hand - saw the standing up and the cards on their backs and rushed over like the vulture I am, only getting a glimpse before it was all efficiently cleared away for the next hand:

Kabbaj:  Kh Kc
Player 1 (whom I think was Ali Mallu):  Ad Ac
Player 2:  Ac Qs

Board:  Ahrt Qd 4d 7-x

And if I've got this right, Ali was the shortest stack, as only John was eliminated, while Mallu now has 35k to work with.

When you have 708 starters and players dropping like Flemmings, you're bound to miss a fair few departures, which is why I often undertake a journey over to the cash/STT games to player spot.

On my last outing, I saw the following players mixing it up on the sidegames, so that pretty much bitten the dust in the Main Event.

Annette_15
Richard Toth
Mats Iremark
Willie Tann
Thomas Wahlroos
John Magill
Andreas Hoivold
Mohammed Shafiq
Paul Kristoffersen
Dave Gregory
Ramzi Jelassi
Rob Taylor
Matt Tyler

Robert Binelli
Barny Boatman

Big pot makes new chip leader (probably - Roland de Wolfe has a pretty big stack - 90k at a glance):

Threeway all-in on a K-J-T rainbow flop.
A-K
vs. David Benyamine's J-J
vs. This guy Metin Antar (pictured)'s A-Q for the flopped straight, which held up as tiny blanks hit the turn and river.

100k in the pot...now 100k in his stack

Chris Moorman is now on a massive 71,500 and a real threat to this year's Irish Open.

Raising pre-flop with A-6s, Chris was called and saw a T-9-7 Flop.

Chris bet again, but when called, managed to his an 8 on the Turn for the idiot end of the straight.

Mateyboy pushed all-in with K-Q, and Chris correctly picked off the bluff.

Nice guy Len Collins is running similalry well with 70,050, and his hand, although rather more clinical, also involved a raggy Ace.

Raising pre-flop with A-7s, Len was called in the big blind.

"I was just trying to nick the blinds," said Len, "and when he called I was looking to give it up if I missed, but I managed to flop a flush draw so bet out 4k. He raised it to 8k and I called, only to see the Flush hit the Turn. I checked, he bet 10k and I moved all-in for 23k, albeit with an Oscar winning performance to ensure I got that extra 13k. He turned over 5-3 suited for a smaller flush and I pretty much doubled up."

Andy Black and Teddy Sheringham, the latter chatting up the merchandise girls with Michael Greco, have both been spotted on the rail, so it looks like they bit the dust a while back.

-------------

Brendan McHugh is OUT.

All-in with 4c 4s, Brendan was up against Ks Qc and was looking good until the Turn brought the Kd.

Paul Gourlay is now one of your chip leaders with 111k after finding Aces and seeing Jacks and then Tens raise before him.

Bhupinder Kohli is the winner of the Climber of the Day prize for this story:

In the second or third level, with 9k against Elvis with a little less, he got it all in with just three raises (him under the gun to 700, small blind raise to 2.5k, him all-in, call).  He held Ks Kh against Qc Qs... The board came T-J-2-8-9 and he was down to just 900.  Straight away his table was broken and he found himself all-in with A-5 against A-J which he promptly outdrew and never looked back.  "I won every hand I played after that until I got up to 30k."  Trophy for Kohli!

Phil Starrs is OUT, all-in pre-flop, Aspades Qh vs. Ac Kh, 6h Tc 7d 9h 9c board.

------------------

Ryan Fronda is OUT.

Ran his shortstacked A-Q into Simon Child's American Airlines (Terry MrDaid folded Jacks).

Harmless board:

3d 2h 3c Ks Ad

The tannoy-ed voice of Liam Flood comes into the pressroom at the kind of decibel level which ordinarily counts as antisocial behaviour and would get a formal warning from Environmental Health...so we are in no doubt that "THIS IS THE LAST HAND THAT WILL BE DEALT TONIGHT.  YOU MUST DO THE CHIP RACE FOR THE PONY CHIPS.  WOULD ALL BLOGGERS PLEASE VACATE..." at this point my left eardrum burst and I had to start packing up.
