Title: Deepish stack tourney...
Post by: pswnio on April 06, 2007, 10:57:56 PM
... but blinds have escalated and action has been slow. They are now 600/1200. Player A is SB, Player B is BB. Both have 16k in chips, average stack at just over 20k. Player B has just been moved to the table.

Action is folded round. Let's assume you are player A, you have AK and you min raise to 2400. Player B re-raises to 6000.

Question 1 - Fold, call, reraise? (I think I know the answer to this one :)).

Flop comes T87, rainbow. Pot now 12k, each player on 10k.

Question 2 - How much do you put in, or do you check?

Let's assume you check and player B moves all in.

Question 3 - Call or fold muttering about how badly you played the hand?

well no min raise first off but if you're really into that then you have to push preflop.

there's no standard play on that kinda flop. you just have to go on your read. but i don't like check-calling unless you somehow know he's only got the 9.

You should have all your chips confiscated for min-raising in the blinds.

Agreed. Why on earth would you min raise unless inviting a large re-raise from very strong uber-aggressive opponents still to act (Flushy....) with a massive hand like AA/KK. Bang in a decent raise and it makes everythign easier. Compound Error by the way IMO. Once i see that flop im no longer interested in winning the pot.

I'm not player A. I'm player B. I just wanted to know whether anyone else thought he misplayed it as badly as I did. I couldn't believe it when he called my push on the flop, and I couldn't believe it when he flipped AK over.

were you making a move here and got fucked by ace high then?

Smells like 5 high to me

That's exactly right, temp0r :)

Stupid, though. I like the move but the timing was all wrong. I'd just moved to the table, I had 45o, I should have scoped it out before I did anything like this. But his min raise was soooo tempting. And when he checked the flop I knew he must have nothing; with his stack I thought he'd have to bet into that to try and kill the drawing hand if he had a monster. I put him on two pictures and hoped he'd be good enough to fold a gutshot if he had a jack. I couldn't believe it when he turned over AK; so badly misplayed. About the only way he was going to get all my chips there, I guess.

Previously I've always played far too tight mid tourny and ended up racing later on. I didn't want to do that here. I think good move, wrong moment.

Errr, if he has a monster he is going to check it

Maybe I'm just scared of giving people free cards and getting outdrawn :)

I like how you played it i just disagree that he is going to push a big hand because he is scared you might have a 9.....

Personally though if i am going to make this move then i am going to Jam pre flop, raising to just 6 makes it far more likely you get called.

Yep, but if he has a pre flop monster he's leaving himself open to a represented hand on the turn, maybe. If the jack comes, what's he gonna do if facing a push from an unknown?

IF he has a pre flop monster and IF he didn't re-raise it pre flop, and IF the pre flop re-raiser checks the flop and IF the Jack comes on the turn and IF the pre flop re-raiser checked an open ended str8 draw on the flop, then he may have found himself in a spot of bother.

I think we can agree the chances of that happening are fairly low.

BUT! We know that he doesn't raise pre flop. Or bet the flop. So those are givens. You don't need the J on the turn. 9 will scare the monster, as will 6. As might the board pairing. Too many scare cards to come on that board, I don't like slow playing there. I'm sure you're right, though, plenty would.

How often does a pre flop re-raiser check the flop, especially when this shallow stacked?

He didn't reraise. He called a reraise. I don't know, Flushy, you're a damn sight more experienced than me. Maybe I should shut up and start listening ;)

I don't like the raise to 6k. Ok, so he prob folds if he's on a total steal, but if he calls hes got 10k back in a 12k pot with irish position and a semi competent player will push when he hits any part of the flop and push a fair amount of bluffs and semi bluffs given the pot size there, giving you no chance to take down the pot.

There are other possibilities such as he has an ace, it comes ace high and he can check knowing you are quite likely to represent the ace.
