My Dell 8600 is a couple of years old now and seems to be getting increasingly tetchy.  Looking to spend between £500 and a £1000 on a new laptop and any suggestions/recommendations graefully appreciated.  Usage wise, it's pretty much 100% poker, so if any of you guys have a system you're pleased with or have seen any particularly good deals anywhere, please post.

You can pick up some very good duel core, 1g ram 17 inch screen lappys these days for 499-699 depending on the extra bits, anything more is not needed if you just pokering on it.

I'm in pretty much the same boat as you, but I'm trying to keep under £500.

So far I've been asked if you need to keep it a) pretty mobile, or is it a b) 'desktop replacement'.

For a) you'll want a 15'' screen, but if it's b) & you don't need to move the machine around much, then a 17'' screen is better.

Personally I'm looking at a) and I've been told that the best specs include

An Intel core 2 duo processor, 2Ghz or better, and 1GB RAM.

I've never heard of them, but I'm told ZOOSTORM are pretty hot, especially with the bigger screens.

Someone I trust & who knows computers inside out has just got a Sony Vaio for just over £800, so I rate that as a pretty good endorsement.

But I'll probably end up with Dell.  They are 'reliable but uninspiring', and you can always get them fixed if they go wrong.

Oh, and avoid Vista for the time being, stick with XP.

That's abut 3 weeks research in a nutshell, but I still haven't had the balls to actually buy one yet.  My last one was from PC World & it's crap.  The wireless centrino thingy keeps on freezing when I'm playing, so I took it back & they said 'yes, it probably does'.

So good luck, avoid PC World, & expect to pay about £800, you should be fine.

I got a nice Acer a few months back for about £450,  good enough for my poker games and a nice lappy too.
