Title: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: danafish on April 10, 2007, 02:59:09 AM Are blind people allowed to play live poker? You know, with someone to look at their cards and tell them what they've got. It's been worrying me.

It's been worrying me. it would be impossible to do but you can get braile cards for use in homegames but not really pracable for casinos Title: Re: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: danafish on April 10, 2007, 03:02:06 AM Yes, but would they be allowed to have someone sit with them and tell them what their cards were? It seems horribly unfair...
Title: Re: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: Ironside on April 10, 2007, 03:04:10 AM no they wouldn't due to the fact the person could be over heard
Title: Re: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: danafish on April 10, 2007, 03:12:04 AM I think that's sad. :'(
There's a whole untapped gambling demograph there. Title: Re: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: wsopin07 on April 10, 2007, 03:12:22 AM a company actually made some kind of machine that tells the player the cards they have!!!!

Post by: bolt pp on April 10, 2007, 03:14:17 AM Also if your pal telling you what cards you had was phil ivey he might be giving you a couple of taps under the table or a major Ingram cough everytime you go to make a play he doesn't agree with.
Title: Re: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: danafish on April 10, 2007, 03:22:34 AM What about if it wasn't the guy's mate, it was an independent third party, and he whispered really really quietly?
Title: Re: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: bolt pp on April 10, 2007, 03:28:26 AM Like a poker guide dog?
What about if the independent third party was a really crap poker player and was inadvertently giving off loads of tell's, a Little sigh or holding his breath when the flop comes down? the blind guy's sitting there like a rock and his advisers jumping about all over the place!! Title: Re: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: danafish on April 10, 2007, 03:31:15 AM Occupational hazard. None of that seems to be any reason to stop someone from playing. I'm going to start a campaign! If I can be bothered.

In seriousness, it is surprising there is no program to assist the visually impaired to play internet poker. Only a matter of time I guess. Title: Re: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: Swordpoker on April 10, 2007, 08:26:45 AM I don't see why not.
Blind fencing exists. You get a seeing partner shouting instructions at you. Many of the reactions are done by feel anyway. I must try it sometime, it'd be a hoot. bB4? Title: Re: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: Royal Flush on April 10, 2007, 09:05:35 AM There is a blind guy who plays in vegas with someone telling him his cards and the flops, so yes is the answer.
Title: Re: When the sunglasses are there for a reason... Post by: kinboshi on April 10, 2007, 09:06:24 AM Not quite the same thing, but the online poker rooms are very inaccessible to a wide number of people.
Tribeca introduced hot keys, so you didn't have to use a mouse to play. This might sound like an irrelevance to most, but there are many people who don't/can't use a mouse - people with movement issues, those with RSI that stops them from using a mouse, etc. There are also the visually impaired, either completely blind or with limited vision. I guess the resizeable pokerstars tables are a help to those with limited vision, but none of the software packages would be readable by a screen-reader or other assistive technologies. There's no reason why a blind person couldn't play live - with a camera that reads the cards and some technology that then translates this onto their braille machine. The only problem is making this portable and simple to use if the player is moved around from one seat to another during a tournament. Definitely can be done though. Post by: AdamM on April 10, 2007, 01:13:55 PM i dealt for a partially sighted guy in nottingham once. he could make out his own cards and chip denominations but needed the cards announcing as they came down and needed to know how many people were in the pot before him. he knew where he was in relation to the button at all times and never needed prompting for his blinds but did need telling when it was his turn to act mid hand.
