I have shiny newish desktop pc with lots of bells and whistles. It is fast (something called an intel core 2 processor) , loads of memory etc. Trouble is, it takes AGES to fire up when I turn it on - up to ten minutes!. I think this is because it is happily loading in lots of the software I do not really need on a daily basis. Is there an idiot-proof way of changing what loads in at start up?

Once it is up and running, in "run" type "msconfig"

Goto startups and deselect the programs not needed.

For details on weather you need a program to start or not, goto http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Also get "adaware" and "spybot" from the net and run these programs regular

The boot tab does more of the same, but again, leave any Microsoft Corportation things alone, they're probably system files that you need.

When you press "Cntrl Alt Delete" , how many running processes do you have?

Could also be a corrupt registry, or conflicting hardware/software.

Corrupted registry I can help with.

PS Should take no more than 5-10 seconds to start up

Are u using mcaffe or norton antivirus?

Using norton - and under the processes tab i currently have about 40!

Norton slowed my computer dwn summat silly.
I asked for help on this bout a month back on the below topic. look from about page 3 onwards where i start blabbing. should help.
Get rid of norton and use NOD32 definately!!!!

Defo get rid of Norton.

Try starting your computer in safe mode . Press F8 (from memory) during boot up and you will see an option to start in safe mode. How long does that take?

Also, create a new user and log on as that user, it may be your user profile has become unstable

Followed the great advice given - got shot of Norton, replaced with that Noddy thing, changed my start up applications, and now it is working a treat.

Thanks from me as well. I have had a couple of programs that start from startup on my pc for about six months that i never use, they just open up automatically and i then shut them down straight away.

No longer wasting those essential couple of minutes.
