I'm looking for peoples experiences of how they see the river being dealt.  In my experience, if the players are heads up on the river all-in and their hole cards are shown, I've seen the dealer look at the river and indicate what card it is before it gets dealt.  Sometimes (mainly home games) they will indicate a different card to watch you sweat.  To a lesser extent I've seen this on the turn and even fewer times as early as the flop.

I am totally against this practice and think that the card should be dealt as if the players were not all-in, e.g., dealer doesn't look till it's on the board.  I know they are trying to add to the drama, but it's just irritating.  It's a bit of showboating by the dealer who is there to perform the mechanics of the hand, not add to the drama.  I would go as far as to say, if the dealer is a player in the game then it's an unfair advantage as they could use this practice to attempt to put others on tilt.

Part of the reason I am so against self deal is because of this - as far as I am concerned, the dealwer should be there as an objective thrid party, and their aim is to deal with the mechanics of the game.

I'd moan to the floor staff if I had this going on at my table.

But then I am a bad tempered old cow :)

You've seen this in casinos and/or poker clubs?

If it's in self deal games (presumably it wouldn't be with house dealers), I wouldn't want it to be happening to me

a) it slows the game
b) it might put me on edge

so if it was irritating me I'd ask them to stop, and if it got tetchy, get the supervisor to get them to stop

It would annoy me no end, if a dealer announced one card and laid down another I would tilt, all over him  ::)

Yes, it's always been at self-deal games or home games.  The house dealers wouldn't try it.

If you complain about these things you are seen as attempting to upset the friendly mood of the table.  Maybe I'm complaining in the wrong way.  ;)

I saw a hand in the casino (tournament) where every player at the table was shown the river before the person who won the hand.  The guy had gone all-in on the turn with KJh and the board had AQh with 2 rags.... The dealer looked at the card, then showed all the guys round the table, and then put it on the board to show the Th.

I have seen too many of these deals for it not to happen at other events. I'll try and get it stamped out at the home games.  If they don't stop, then when I'm dealing I may have to do it myself...  >:D  Or maybe not.

At the Riverboat, and the person who was dealing was a regular.

Have a quiet word with the cardroom mamager. It would be unheard of to allow this in any of the Grosvenors, for example

For me it was just a case of not wanting to rock the boat.  The guys have been playing there for a long time and obviously are pretty friendly and feel it's ok to do this.  For someone who only plays there once a month it's hard to complain too much. 

I shall definitely mention it to the home game guys, but they'll probably just keep doing it anyway.  Perhaps we could have a rule at the home game that anyone doing it will be banned from dealing for the rest of the night... Although some players that don't like dealing may start doing it to avoid the deal.  I'll see how things pan out.  I'm off to Cincinatti's card room tonight and will see if this is happening there.  Anyone reading this and going tonight... don't bother trying to wind me up ;-)

I like it when the card is placed face down in position on the table (small pause for dramatic effect) and flipped over for all to see at the same time.

for the home game i`d be putting in a penalty for this..its not funny and its not clever either, and if thats what happened then i`d reconsider the people playing in the home game.

As for the river boat yet another example of amatuer night...if there is money on the table then it should be played correctly..if you want to be a comediian do stand up - if you want to play cards then do it right and have a laugh after the hand.

IMO televised poker has a lot to blame, producers tell dell the dealers to take their time and turn the cards over slowly for "effect", it is outrageous how much control they have!!

We'll introduce a rule at the home games to settle it.  I don't have as much of a problem with the dealer putting the card face down then hesitating before flipping (although it is annoying) but I do get pissed off when others see the card before me.  When that happens I always look to the dealer to get an indication of what the card is... then a few second delay before I get shown that I've won/lost.

Looks like everyone that's replied agrees so it should be easy enough to sort out.

Agreed, although at least they don't look first.

I like a slight delay of perhaps a couple of seconds, just so that I can work out what card will beat me before it comes

and a calculator to work out the odds LOL
