Title: Where would I live if I ?????? Rookie needs some help!!!!! Post by: wsopin07 on April 19, 2007, 02:14:49 PM There is a possibility that I will move to Europe in August of 2007 after the finish on the 2007 WSOP. The question I have is where would I live and why???? Here are some of the questions that need to be answered, I plan to be in Europe for one year:
1) Travel / I will be playing all EPT and all major comps, I need good transportation 2) Poker / I would think that being close to DTD would make sense 3) Cost / What is the difference between, say, London or Nottingham 4) Car / Would I need one or would I hire CUPCAKE as my fulltime driver 5) Things to do / I want to play golf, sight see, have some fun other than poker 6) Friends & poker players / Where do most poker players live Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated  Title: Re: Where would I live if I ?????? About one third of those in London. 4) Nope, you are a crazy yank driver, don't bother with a car. 5) The Midlands has Britain's best selection & varietty of Golf Courses. But be warned, we have hills......The best countryside, the Peak National Park is just up the road. Nice train stations, too. 6) Thewy lives in nearby Notts, DC 45 mins away in Birmingham, Mr Cool ditto, Maria 30 mins away in Grantham, I'm in Derbyshire. you can fly to the scottish highlands for £35 if you want to sightsee or golf Title: Re: Where would I live if I ?????? Rookie needs some help!!!!! Post by: RED-DOG on April 19, 2007, 02:31:50 PM Anywhere in the midlands, good transport, plenty poker, easy access DTD.
Failing that, anywhere in Yorkshire, gods own country. Title: Re: Where would I live if I ?????? Rookie needs some help!!!!! Post by: Ironside on April 19, 2007, 02:32:52 PM tikay i think you have britain and england mixed up again

Post by: AndrewT on April 19, 2007, 02:40:32 PM Whilst you say Europe, reading between the lines I think you actually are considering Britain (mention of DTD, London etc).
1) Any city of any size will be close enough to an airport to get you direct to places like Copenhagen, Dortmund etc. 2) Well, then, that's Nottingham, isn't it? 3) London is more expensive than elsewhere, but unless you want to live in the arsehole of nowhere like Middlesbrough then no place is cheap. Especially with the crowbar-beating the dollar is taking on the exchange markets, when you convert sums in your head you'll get a heart attack. 4) In London, no. I live here and have never even learnt to drive. You'd only need one if you have young kids. Out in the sticks a car is needed as the public transportation is a bit hit and miss. Of course, you'll already know how much of a pain London taxi drivers are... :) 5) Golf courses are everywhere, so are fun things. There are more fun things in London, but there's more of everything in London. 6) Most poker players live with their heads in the clouds, but with their souls in the gutter. Hope this helps. Post by: LLevan on April 19, 2007, 03:31:45 PM Nottingham would obviously be a good location for DTD, however I would possibly suggest being somewhere slightly nearer to London to allow you the freedom of being within easy reach of either, especially London for air travel. Be aware that the nearer to London you live the more expensive it will be. With apologies to anyone from Milton Keynes, the place looks like a concrete jungle but it would be ideal in location being about halfway between London & Nottingham, don't ask me house prices cos I ain't got a clue I was thinking more in terms of geography lol. I'm sure grandad, oops Tikay, would introduce you to the delights of British Snail or whatever they call themselves these days so a car is not so much of a necessity. As for golf I ain't got a clue but 2 certain uk individuals might be worried about a hustle so please declare you correct handicap. I doubt if this helps much but GL all the same.

I guess it would be nice to be a short taxi ride from a place I can play everyday, then when I need to travel I will need a train, a plane, or maybe a CUPCAKE!!!! Parking is probasbly dearer, after you've taken into account the time it takes to get through the Queues at Luton "Airport", especially at the East Jet Desk. They had ONE check-in Desk serving THREE flights there when I flew to Nice a few weeks back, & I queued non-stop for 4 hours in different queues. Never again. East Mids or Birmingham, turn up & fly, simple, & the Budget airlines are well represented there too. Title: Re: Where would I live if I ?????? Rookie needs some help!!!!! Rookie needs some help!!!!! Post by: bobby1 on April 19, 2007, 06:09:24 PM There is a possibility that I will move to Europe in August of 2007 after the finish on the 2007 WSOP. The question I have is where would I live and why???? Here are some of the questions that need to be answered, I plan to be in Europe for one year: 1) Travel / I will be playing all EPT and all major comps, I need good transportation 2) Poker / I would think that being close to DTD would make sense 3) Cost / What is the difference between, say, London or Nottingham 4) Car / Would I need one or would I hire CUPCAKE as my fulltime driver 5) Things to do / I want to play golf, sight see, have some fun other than poker 6) Friends & poker players / Where do most poker players live Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated  Thats more like it mate.....you will love it over here. As for location I think the Midlands would be perfect for you, as many have said you will have easy access to most places from around there and have many friends within a few hours at most. The cost in London is truly ridiculous when you compere what you have for your dosh against what you could have in say Tikays manor. I can just see John in suit and hat driving you around so yes, Cupcake for transport but beware he might be expensive as you know how much London cabbies make :D The Midlands has loads of golf and Soccer teams and you would only be 1 hour away from Sheffield where you can take Sheff Utd as your adopted UK football team. good luck mate Title: Re: Where would I live if I ?????? That's not nice to take the mick out of an American by pretending that Sheffield Utd is a football team! I'd echo what others have said. You want to be near to Nottingham and that'll give you access to nearby airports and you're still not far from Birmingham, and not a million miles from London. Some lovely areas around Nottingham and a pretty decent standard of living. Title: Re: Where would I live if I ?????? Rookie needs some help!!!!! Post by: Karabiner on April 19, 2007, 10:54:04 PM Nottingham would obviously be a good location for DTD, however I would possibly suggest being somewhere slightly nearer to London to allow you the freedom of being within easy reach of either, especially London for air travel. The Sportsman, Palm Beach, The Vic. Then the less legal venues, Gutshot, Western, Big Slick. You have the best transport links, 1hr30 from Nottingham on the train, less than that to Luton, the other way it's less than 1hr to Brighton. The only thing that stops it being the instant choice would be the cost. Title: Re: Where would I live if I ?????? Rookie needs some help!!!!! Title: Re: Where would I live if I ?????? Rookie needs some help!!!!! Post by: divaflava on April 24, 2007, 11:12:32 AM I'd suggest either around Oakham (if you want to be part of a community) or one of the villages in the Vale of Belvoir (if you want privacy). Hour and a half drive to London (I drive quickly; it might take a little longer at 55mph) via either A1 or M1, 20 mins to East Midlands Airport/DTD/Nottingham. Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle also within a few hours drive at most.
More real eastate for your dollar than pretty much anywhere else that meets your criteria. If I had your money I'd check out http://www.humberts.co.uk/search.dtx?&officecriteria=2 The only downside is you'll get nagged incessantly by Adam M to show at his world famous £10 home game in Grantham (although, it would, again, be only 20 mins away). Post by: BettyBlue on April 24, 2007, 02:41:53 PM Personally, I’d avoid Nottingham like the plague – DTD notwithstanding. An American equivalent would be somewhere like Detroit.
However, there's a lot to be said for a city like Nottingham for someone like you though. It has the highest ratio of women to men in any English city, so that might be of interest. The downside is that it's the gun capital of England so there's a fairly high chance that someone might unload their shot at you when you've just shot your load, which might end up being quite painful, even for an American. Stick to London. It's dirty, expensive and there are too many people, but if you want to be at the heart of eveyrthing the country has to offer then it has to be London. Anywhere else will just seem like you’re watching life go by, but in London you’re actually living the life. Title: Re: Where would I live if I ?????? Rookie needs some help!!!!! If your a drug dealer you might have a chance of bumping into someone with a gun (like anywhere else) otherwise its fine. Its a great city with lots to do a see, don't beleive everything thats written in The Sun and The Daily Mail. Title: Re: Where would I live if I ?????? Rookie needs some help!!!!!
