OK, so I had heard a lot about it. Finally I couldnt put it off any longer. There I was in the airport WH Smith and it was willing me to buy it. So I did, thinking it would pass the next few hours in the air.

Erm, not quite. I am really hoping here that after the first 4-5 chapters this starts to get a LOT better, cos after 45 minutes I had to put it away. Seemed to be full of self-indulgent bullsh*t.

In my mind I saw a book about a guy who rolled a dice to make decisions (and arguably duck out of the moral implications of those decisions).

At the moment I've got a book about a moany arsed psychiatrist....and no dice.

anyone managed to read all of this ?

lol, nope, read about the same as you by the sounds of it. 

Couldn't get into it either.  I probably read about a third of it, but it was a while ago now and I can't even remember what happened.

I got a bout a third of the way through it and decided it was pap. I mean if i want to read about soft porn, i can buy the news of the world. Im sure others will disagree.

I think it's just the weird premise that is interesting and carries the book.

I read it and enjoyed it a long time ago. From my hazy memory the story is clumsy and not particulary well written.

Been about 10 years since i read it but i enjoyed it.  the main character is not a likeable man and i guess it can be difficult to get into a book if you fing it hard to empathise with the characters.

I remember not being able to get into the book at all and giving up after a couple of chapters.

If you'd asked me Laz I'd have recommended NOT buying it - when the ex would drag me on beach holidays I'd always pack at least a dozen books, and I'd usually include a couple that I'd not normally read - because lying on the beach I'll read anything to make up for the boredom. I even managed to grind my way though Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, but Diceman is the only book I've taken on one of those holidays & not managed to force myself to keep reading.

for sale....one copy of..  hehe anyway, just put it down to experience.

I'll put it up there on the shelf beside Will Self's "How the dead live".

And I thought it was just me. I thought this book was a crock of .....

I got halfway through and lost the will to live.  I recommend 'All In' by Mitchell Symons as the perfect antidote to The Diceman.

Thank you all, I also thought I was alone in loathing this book and giving up half way. Maybe we need to start a support group to get the word out to others.

Note to self:  Don't by this book.

Got to differ - maybe gets off to a slow start but it's a decent book. Also the follow up is worth reading - Search for the Diceman I think

Another book to avoid at all costs is "The laws of our fathers" by Scott Turow. I openly wept when I finished this one, not because the story moved me, but it was extremely long and exceptionally tedious. 647 pages worth of over descriptive clap trap. Give me a good Michael Connelly anytime

Your a better man than me,i found this book painfully self indulgent/pretentious and managed about half before giving up.Diceman is a bit rambling but there was an interesting South Bank documentary about George 'Luke Rhinehart' Cockroft who explained his thinking behind the 'Dice life' and how he actually lived it for a while which made the book clearer.

It was the only book I had that I hadn't read - I'd even read the girlie books she'd taken with her ;D . VERY self-indulgient and pretentios - but some interesting stuff in it too. Still better than the Diceman IMHO.

Everyone told me to read "Amarillo Slim In A World Full Of fat People". I read it, and decided he was the single most annoying person I had ever read about in my entire life, living, dead or fictional.

And the way he showers praise on Benny Binion when he told him "I've never killed a man that didn't deserve it".

I guess you dont get to where he is (or was, considering his dodgy conviction) without being a shameless self-promoter. The book just proves to me that we're worlds away from America in some of our sensibilities.
