Title: The blonde Forum
Post by: tikay on October 07, 2005, 12:40:37 PM
After a week away from home, during which I have worked & played almost 24/7, I took the 0610 train out of London this morning so I could get home & get caught up on the Forum. Other than Live Updating, (hope you enjoyed them) I have barely been on the Forum for a week. I regret that greatly, but there are only 24 hours in a day, & I can't have my cake & eat it.

I found 39 PM's awaiting me. 37 of them related, directly or indirectly, to the change of tone & atmosphere on the blonde Forum in recent weeks. By "indirectly" I mean many of them were about the Moderators - but remember, I only found it necessary to appoint Moderators because the Forum was attracting some inappropriate & unsavoury posts. I shall post seperately about the Moderators later today. For now, suffice to say, 6 have been appointed, & another 6 will be appointed in the next feew weeks, so that the 12 of them can work in rotation, & not always be "on duty". But that will be explained in a different thread.

To be honest, when i scanned the Forum this morning, I could have wept. The whole atmosphere has soured, it is astonishing how the odd bad apple can ruin a place so quickly.

I immediately decided that enough was enough. I called up Dave Colclough, who, by the way, is unwell again, & spoke to him at length about where this Forum goes from here. (Dave is still in Baden). We agreed entirely on the course of action we should follow. To the Moderators, over whom's heads I have acted, I apologise. But it's kinda like when the same guy keeps pinching your Big Blind - at some point, you have to make a stand. That time has well & truly arrived for the Poker 425 blonde Forum.

This has been, quite exceptionally, a fun place. "Putting a smile on the face of Poker" was Dave's mission when he & I first discussed setting up blonde. And we achieved that, on this Forum, with a bit to spare, it had THE most beautuful, friendly, relaxing, warm, atmo, quite unique in my opinion. Exactly what we setbout to achieve, & we were lucky enough to attract a great bunch of Members.

Indeed, it was so good, that it attracted sponsorship from Poker 425, that's pretty unusual for a Poker Forum. I explained in depth, at the time, how that came about, & why. They get no editorial input at all, & they have been true to their word, they have left us alone. The money they pay us, contributes greatly (but not wholly) to the cost of Live Updates. These cost a LOT of money. Airfares & hotel costs soon add up. Baden alone cost around £1,500, & that EXCLUDES any payment to Jen, or myself. (I don't take a wage out of blonde). So, on purely commercial grounds, I am obliged to keep this Forum the way it was. We lose the sponsors, we lose the Live Updates. Fact.

But that is SECONDARY to my main concern. This is supposed to be a fun place. Where peeps do not have to be on their guard against personal attacks. Where, after, or even during, a hard day, folks come along & have a good time, nice & relaxed, always cool. There are loads of family folks on here, ladies, children even, & it's safe & friendly for them to be here.

In the last 3 or 4 weeks, it has changed. Not a bit, a LOT. And I don't like it. Adam M, for example, a long-standing Member, got grossly insulted. So did Mel Lofthouse. So did many others. Someone posted a list of Members real names & home towns - quite deliberately, make no mistake about that.  These Moderator guys, 48 hours into their new roles have had PM's describing them as tw**s. On behalf of blonde, I apologise personally to those who have been maligned or insulted. That's not why you came here, & I'm very sorry it happened..

Some might even suggest that one or two of the new Members have come on here deliberately to ruin our Forum, to sabotage it. Maybe just because they like to wreck things, or maybe they have other reasons, more sinister. I don't know why they do it in truth, & I don't really care.

Because I am NOT going to allow it. End of story. We run this Forum as a fun place, or not at all. Is that a  threat? Nope, a fact.

With immediate effect, I intend to ban any Members who I believe are deliberately trying to destroy this place, or who are posting inappropriately.

You ALL know the rules we have here, they are very simple. No flaming, no spamming, common sense & moderation in all things.

Now we get to the tricky bit, but as far as I am concerned, I am gonna bet the house on this.

This is MY Forum. I will run it howsoever I wish. I do NOT need anyone's permission to do anything. I will explain, in great detail, what I feel I want to explain, but I'll do what i want. I am not answerable to anyone, except to Dave, & to the blondeites who have made this such a beautiful & innocent place. They will support me. I KNOW they will.

So, & here comes the rub. To those who say "are you saying it's take it or leave it?", yes. YES. I am. I have to be as clear as I can on this, let there be no misunderstanding whatsoever. I will ban anyone I feel like banning. I am not answerable to anyone, except the blondites who built this place, to Dave, & to myself. I have invested more time & money in building this place than anyone. The Live Update costs, which are far in excess of the income we have received, have all come out of my & Dave's pocket. In fact, Dave & I have spent a huge 5 figure sum on blonde, & neither of us have had one, single, solitary, penny back yet. Many blondites have also invested their time, doing Live Updates for no money, just keeping this place cool.

You gonna give me the "this is a democracy" stuff, "what about free speech?". Don't bother, 'cos I ain't listening.

As far as I am concerned, I have PROVEN my good intentions to all of you, & I don't need to justify it. You have a prob, you write to me, I answer it. If I, or blonde, can help, we will.

Those who are not happy with this can leave. Now. There will be no argument on the matter. I will ban as many as I need to. Don't give me "you can't do that?" because I can, & I will. Twist those words all you like, but the good guys know EXACTLY what I mean, & have learned by now that tikay has never crossed anyone in his life without good reason.

There will of course be an exodus of indignant ex-blondeites. I don't give a monkeys. There are plenty of other Poker Forums you can ruin. Don't ruin this one.

This place was set up so we could have fun. You can debate, argue, disagreee, all day long, but we will ALWAYS end with a smile and a laugh and a goodnight kiss, like a '50's film. We always try & give a personal welcome new Members, we wish each other Happy Birthday, we put up pics of our kids, & our pets, we do a bit of charity stuff, we talk a little poker. THATS the kind of place we want, & that's what we gonna have. That's what Dave & I planned at Day One. The plan remains unchanged.

These last few weeks on blonde have been ugly, ugly, ugly. Well, no more, enough is enough.

End of story.

Kent Brockman Was Right -- Democracy Simply Doesn't Work
I applaud you for taking this stand and agree with everything you say. Happy to be involved in a small way with YOUR forum and hope to continue to do so.
I would encourage others to post support here.

I agree with you Tikay.

Moderators are needed on every forum and it's thankless task and I don't envy any of them one bit.

The one thing I've been thinking of recently is that it might be a good idea to write up a nice, extensive, set of rules and words about the spirit of the forum so everyone can read them in black and white and know exactly how things are done around here and how we like our forum to operate. If anyone doesn't like it then they can always have one of those drinks ariston is always on about.

I have now made the first Ban.

Tolerance & forgiveness are very important to me, or maybe I'm just a bit wet, but I have made the Ban a "suspension",  for 30 days. If the suspended Member wishes to return after 30 days & post in a blonde compliant manner, I would welcome it. If said Member returns & is unable to contribute in a suitable manner, the Ban will be made permanent.

my support and respect not only to Tikay, but the Moderators he's nominated too. It shouldn't be a thankless task at all, not here.

we need to hear the collective sound of 1400 deep breaths

Bongo.

"An extensive se of rules need to be published for Moderators". I will post about Moderators next. A HUGE amount of work has been put in, and a list of Moderators Rules & Members Guidelines has been compiled. I am currently wrestling with the decision as to whether I should publish a "set of Rules" for Members & Moderators. But that will be a separate thread, give me a little while, & my "Moderators Post" will be up, & you can contribute to the debate, I hope.

I have a problem with some of Kev's dress sense so I can't support the man.

Tikay, I didn't mean rules for moderators, personally I can look at who has been selected and trust them to do what they think is right, some people may feel happier knowing what the guidelines are though.

I was thinking of guidelines for members, maybe inserting them as part of the registration process as well, but also available to read at anytime, something that explains what the forum is all about so people can see before they join.

I have done my best to comment on what is going on here recently or post in the nasty threads. Yet i would like to pledge my support to Tikay and the good people of Blonde on getting the place back to its old self. It is a unique place and that has to be preserved even if it does mean taking some nasty steps.

I dont always simply add my name to lists of people saying "I agree" in these situations but this is an important one.

That was a forceful and frank post, Tikay, and I'm sure a lot of thought went into it. I hope you are heartened by the messages of support already here and I add my own.

I know that myself, Davey, Malc and the others at poker4charity who contribute here are ever grateful for the support shown by you and other blondites. Not only this but we enjoy the site.

As always these things need a gentle (ahem ahem) hand on the tiller and that is what tikay has done.

Looking forward to seeing blonde growing as it has in the past and in the way that I and others have enjoyed in the past.

 :) :)

Since I started this thread, I have had 5 PM's on the subject, from Rhu, The truth, Andrew T, 12BarBlues & Eazyrider. All were supportive, I am relieved & pleased to say, they did not "go public" because it involved "naming names", & we wanna damp the fire down, not fan the flames. Thanks Guys for the PM's, the support, & the great advice therein. I am sorry, but time just does not permit replies to each of them, but I hope you'll take this post as my way of saying thanks.

The banned Member has now attacked us, &, in the main, me, on his own blog, & his message is clear "I aint done with you yet". Well, at least his agenda is now clear. My advice to you guys is not to respond, or get involved, no useful purpose will be achieved. Turn the other cheek, lets just get on with enjoying life.

I don't think you need to go to the trouble of writing a set of rules.  Typical blonde members will naturally behave well on any forum.  Anyone else would ignore all rules and misbehave anyway.  Just ban 'em as they offend and save yourself the work.

Nobody sadder than me Ian. Oops, better rephrase that. I was greatly saddened to be forced to post it. I am as down as a down thing today. But I've done what I believe to be right. And I believe it was the only course of action. I PM'd everyone involved several times, begged them to show restraint, respect the "mood" of this place, but they had another agenda, it has now become evident. But it's nice to see so many folks saying "yeah, lets get blonde back to what it used to be". So we've had a little pain, &, hopefully, a lot of gain.

By the way, did you get my message asking you to ring me?

I do agree tikay.

As a pointer I do think it's important to have a forum disclaimer that you can refer members to. (you might actually have one but I can't see it) That way it will hopefully minimise people argueing about their behaviour. You can point out that it's there in black and white and they have broken the rules, it gives people less ground to argue on.

Good luck

Haven't been on here long so haven't seen the change in enviornment, wish you all the best for the future

As a newbie to the forum I cannot comment on whats happened in the past. But I have been more then pleased and excited reading through the forum the past few days since my arrival. Not once have a read a negative post. I have been made to feel very welcome.

The very nature of large populated forums these days dictates the need for some form of modding (is that a word!).

If you can't trust the people that spend much time and effort into the site as a whole who can you trust?

Does this mean that unlike on a previous forum where they allowed posts with people threatening to take a baseball bat to me and generally threaten my health as well as my character to remain unless i asked for there removal ,  here i will continue to hear from players who love the game and are always supportive and who's opinions and threads i enjoy reading , if so great job Tony .

Hey Tikay...VERY WELL SAID and VERY WELL DONE.....I've not been active on the site since moving to London (haven't been able to play ANY online games and have only managed to visit the Gutshot once...bugger!) but on the occasions that I manage to spend some time visiting 'Blonde' I want to feel safe in the knowledge that the forum I've grown attached to maintains it's wonderful spirit and hasn't become a place of negativity.

I for one have been made to feel very welcome here and that sentiment was extended when I was fortunate to meet up with some forum members in person (what's the collective noun for a gathering of Blondites?...Any suggestions?). We can't allow the essence of 'Blonde' to become tarnished. Good luck to all the moderators and cheers for putting in the time/effort.

Will.

Hi Aces (Simon Trumper).

Yes, you are 100% correct. We don't comment negatively about other Fora, so let's leave it at that. BUT....... yiou are safe from flaming & threats here, always have been, always will be.

So, we know why you ceased to post, but we'd ask you to reconsider in the case of blonde. You gotta remember Simon, the blondeites LOVE to hear from you big guys, they really do. The typical blondeite struggles to drum up £20 for a tourney, but when they sit shoulder to shoulder on the blonde Forum with the big boys, it gives them a feeling of being part of the whole poker community. So you big guys owe it to us, if i may say so, to do your bit. When the likes of Dave Colclough, Joe Beevers, Carlo, Luca, Thewy, The Camel, Isabelle, Willie, Tony G, Jac Arama, Paul Parker, etc etc post on here, the blondeites just LOVE IT. I mean, if anyone had good reason to be wary of posting, it's Tony G. But he came on, got asked - politely - about his Paris malarky, answered it honestly, & now he's one of us, the guys have adopted him.

So come on Simon, come back in & start posting on blonde. We miss you mate.

Oh, & xx to Mathilde.

You gonna change your name to LondonBilly?

i was going to post in this thread yesterday but never got time, i was out all day and then there was the blonde tourney. congratulations to all that made the final table and thank you to the organisers.

right here goes:

when i joined the forum i didnt know anybody on here personally, i had played against some people but that was it. i was made to feel welcome right from my first post. since being a member i have been fortunate to meet a few people from here. ive met reddog, snoppy, ifm, jammer, ironside and junior all at walsall and i must say each and every one of them were very friendly and gave me the time of day, i also met tikay, colchester kev,djinn,bobby1 and ariston in vegas although only briefly each one of them said hello and were friendly. i have also had people come and support me when doing well in tourneys online which is fantastic. i saw one thread where brian wilson and tonyG were railbirding someone which total respect has to go to these guys.

i have also been fortunate enough to play in 3 blonde tournys and a heads up tourney where i was playing in the same comp as a european champion, a wsop braclet winner, last years top ranked european and current leader of the european rankings just to name a few. this just goes to show what a great forum this really is

this place has always been fun, informative and very very friendly so lets keep it that way. i, for one, am proud to be a blondite.

tikay i think you have the support from everybody on here and i think the moderaters you have appointed will have too.

keep up the great work we do appreciate it

Thanks Dan - your post sums up perfectly what blonde is about, & is the message I was trying to send to Simon Trumper a few posts further up this thread. I do hope he reads it.

I had the pleasure of sitting next to Simon Trumper in a Tourny during last years CPC, and what a lovely guy he was.. Mind .. he took me out  of the tourny  :-\.. but still found time to have a brief chat about the way I played my last hand.

I've PM'd Simon, asking him to call me. I am hoping I can persuade him to start posting again on blonde. He got visciously attacked & abused elsewhere, so he stopped posting everywhere. Our loss. But I'm working on it!

Hi Tikay,

I'm planning to be in London for the next 3yrs but there's no danger of me changing my name to London Billy (just wouldn't sit well with me). I'll definitely be playing more at the Gutshot (so looking forward to bumping into more Blondites and also wanna natter with TightEnd about quizzes & stuff) and will be more active on the forum once I get settled into a decent routine.

Once again, WELL DONE at 'The Masters' and I hope to be sat at another Final Table with you in the not too distant future.

Cheers,

Will.

I only joined here a week or so ago and thought a couple of the abusive messages were over the top. Good to see these are not the norm and are being dealt with accordingly.

Good post tikay, sir

Title: Re: The blonde Forum

Thsanks Suffolk. You joined at a bad time for us I'm afraid. we have NEVER had ANY abusive posts in 9 months, but we got a new Member a few weeks back & he created a terrible atmo straight away. We tied to explain to him that we don't do things that way here, but he was hell-bent on sabotaging the place, so we had to terminate eventually. The mistake we made was letting it last as long as we did. The lesson is learned though. Anyone tries that line in future, we will simply ban them immediately.

Enjoy it Suffolk, blondes have more FUN.

Simon.

If another member flames or insults you, or anyone else for that matter, their message will be deleted. It's as simple as that. This is a 100% flame free forum and we take these issues very seriously.

Keep it light-hearted, keep it fun, keep it blonde.

Happy face -------->  ;D

Bloomin 'eck, what a post that started this thread off. Well said tikay.

I have just had a long weekend out of the country and when I got back, late last night, the first thing I did was turn on the PC to catch up with the posts, the second thing I did was turn it off again, I simply didn't want to face the issues which haunted this site last week. This forum IS special. I may be obsessed with poker and think about it, talk about it and play it far too many hours a day but I am still a newbie. This was the first place I could be comfortable about posting, I joined last April and posted a couple of times about a Vic update, a few weeks later I was "told off" for lurking and chipping in every now aend then and started to post more frequently, indeed I must have posted dozens of time since then  ;D. Since then I have made and met many nw friends, my game has come on and I owe much to this place.

One thing that has always been a constant is the atmosphere, it is a friendly, smiley place to be. I never ever want to feel I couldn't face logging on again. Thanks to all that made it feel that it's the place for me to be and thanks tikay.

I've only just noticed this thread. I too felt the same after a few weeks of holiday I came back to find "something not quite right".

I must say that all the blondites I have had the pleasure of conversing with on this forum since registering 10 months ago have all been a friendly if a little cheeky, interesting bunch of people and for a small minority this is obviously something for them to ruin.

I agree wholeheartedly and I will add that anyone who doesn't think Tikay is being both fair and just here should leave and the place will be better for it.
